Not trying to be picky, just adding that "Garten" in German doesn't always mean a garden as we think of it, a place to grow fruits and vegetables.
It can mean an area like a yard or small park. Basically an enclosed green area inside a village.
So a Kindergarten was a park like area where they gathered the pre-working age kids for activities while the older ones and parents worked in the fiekds, say.
Biergarten, for example, is a outside shady with benches and tables as opposed to the tap room used in the winter.
Tiergarten is a zoo.
