During the time of Abraham it was common for people to sacrifice their children to idols. When God told Abram to sacrifice Isaac, it was a test of his faith and also a symbol of God promise to send the ultimate sacrifice, the Promised Messiah, Jesus Christ, who would be a direct descendant of Abraham.
