Florida Legislature passes ‘anti-riot’ bill

The GOP-controlled Florida Senate on Thursday passed a controversial “anti-riot” bill, sending it to the desk of Gov. Ron DeSantis (R), who began advocating for the bill last year following the unrest that hit many U.S. cities last summer over the deaths of Black people at the hands of police.

The legislation—H.B. 1—would strengthen and create new penalties for crimes committed during a “riot” or violent protest. It would also punish local governments that interfere with law enforcement’s efforts to control riots and establish a citizen’s appeal process when cities and counties attempt to reduce police budgets in response to riots.

This measure was passed the same week as a new wave of Black Lives Matter protests have hit a Minneapolis suburb after a recent high-profile killing of a Black man, Daunte Wright, by police. These protests have seen some violent clashes between protesters and law enforcement, as well as destruction of property.

While the bill’s supporters have argued this bill is about “law and order,” opponents have charged that H.B. 1 restricts the freedoms of speech and peaceful assembly and that it’s meant to attack the Black Lives Matter movement, something which H.B. 1 supporters have denied.

“Can I tell you that this bill is not about racism? Not entirely, I can’t know,” said GOP Senator Ed Hooper, according to CBS News. “But I do believe in my heart that, at the end of the day, we are a nation and a country of law and order.”

Opposing H.B. 1, the American Civil Liberties Union said the legislation would give police broad discretion over what’s deemed a protest and a riot, per CBS News.

“The bill was purposely designed to embolden the disparate police treatment we have seen over and over again directed towards Black and brown people who are exercising their constitutional right to protest,” said Micah Kubic, the executive director of ACLU of Florida, according to CBS News.

The bill passed 23-17, mostly along party lines after more than two hours of heated debate. Only one Republican senator, Jeffrey Brandes, voted against it.

After the bill’s final passage Thursday evening, DeSantis said he looked forward to signing the bill. According to NBC News, he is expected to do so as early as next week.

“This legislation strikes the appropriate balance of safeguarding every Floridian’s constitutional right to peacefully assemble, while ensuring that those who hide behind peaceful protest to cause violence in our communities will be punished,” the governor said in a statement. “Further, this legislation ensures that no community in the state engages in defunding of their police.”

What Biden Didn’t Say About US in Afghanistan

Troops on the ground aren’t the only measure of horrific warfare, writes Norman Solomon.

When I met a 7-year-old girl named Guljumma at a refugee camp in Kabul a dozen years ago, she told me that bombs fell early one morning while she slept at home in southern Afghanistan’s Helmand Valley. With a soft, matter-of-fact voice, Guljumma described what happened. Some people in her family died. She lost an arm.

Troops on the ground didn’t kill Guljumma’s relatives and leave her to live with only one arm. The U.S. air war did.

There’s no good reason to assume the air war in Afghanistan will be over when — according to President Joe Biden’s announcement on Wednesday — all U.S. forces will be withdrawn from that country.

What Biden didn’t say was as significant as what he did say. He declared that “U.S. troops, as well as forces deployed by our NATO allies and operational partners, will be out of Afghanistan” before Sept. 11. And “we will not stay involved in Afghanistan militarily.”

But Biden did not say that the United States will stop bombing Afghanistan. What’s more, he pledged that “we will keep providing assistance to the Afghan National Defense and Security Forces,” a declaration that actually indicates a tacit intention to “stay involved in Afghanistan militarily.”

And, while the big-type headlines and prominent themes of media coverage are filled with flat-out statements that the U.S. war in Afghanistan will end come September, the fine print of coverage says otherwise.

The banner headline across the top of The New York Times homepage during much of Wednesday proclaimed: “Withdrawal of U.S. Troops in Afghanistan Will End Longest American War.”

Buried in Coverage

But, buried in the 32nd paragraph of a story headed “Biden to Withdraw All Combat Troops From Afghanistan by Sept. 11,” the Times reported: “Instead of declared troops in Afghanistan, the United States will most likely rely on a shadowy combination of clandestine Special Operations forces, Pentagon contractors and covert intelligence operatives to find and attack the most dangerous Qaeda or Islamic State threats, current and former American officials said.”

In Video: Russian MIG-31 Fighter Jet Intercepts US Signal Intelligence Plane Over The Pacific Ocean

On April 16, the Ministry of Defense of Russia announced that a MiG-31 fighter jet had been scrambled to escort a US RC-135 intelligence plane over the Pacific Ocean along the southeastern coast of the Kamchatka Peninsula.

“A MiG-31 fighter jet was scrambled from an airfield in the Kamchatka region to identify and escort the plane. The crew identified it as a US RC-135 reconnaissance aircraft,” the ministry said in a statement, adding that the plane had been prevented from violating the Russian border.

According to the ministry, the flight was carried out in strict compliance with international rules for the use of airspace. The MIG-31 safely returned to its home airfield after turning the US plane away from the Russian border.

A video of the interception was released by the ministry. The US plane seen in the video can be identified as a specific variant of the RC-135 known as the RC-135V/W Rivet Joint.

The RC-135V/W is the main airborne signal intelligence (SIGINT) platform for the US Air Force. The plane is equipped with sensors capable of detecting, identifying and locating signals throughout the electromagnetic spectrum.

US spy planes fly along Russia’s border on a regular basis. Recently, the US expanded its aerial intelligence operations to Syria’s coast, where two Russian military bases are located.

Jonathan Pentland Arrest: Incident Reports Say Black Suspect Sexually Harassed Woman, Tried to Snatch Baby

The Black Lives Matter saint seen getting pushed by Army Sergeant Jonathan Pentland on Monday in a viral out-of-context video reportedly sexually harassed a woman and attempted to snatch a baby in separate incidents in Pentland's neighborhood just days before the confrontation took place.

Right before the confrontation took place, the alleged "victim" identified only as "Deandre" allegedly approached "several neighbors in a threatening manner" at which point neighbors ran to Pentland's house and begged him to help protect them.

The incident occurred in a suburb in Columbia, South Carolina and is being reported by the media as a white man harassing a black man for "walking while black."

WACH FOX 57 detailed the first two incidents in a report released Wednesday:

According to one incident report, an African-American man approached a woman walking in the area on April 8, put his hand around her waist and then put her hand down the side of her shorts. The woman then pushed away and when she did, her shorts partially came down. As she pulled her shorts back up, the man put his arm around her waist for a second time, according to the incident report. The woman then ran back into her home.

A second incident report showed on April 10 a woman was walking when an African-American man approached her and picked up a baby who was with her. The woman said he tried to walk away with the baby but she grabbed the child back. She said this happened three times before she told the man it was not her baby and she "did not have the right to allow people to hold the child." She then went home and said she wanted to prosecute, but no charges have been filed, according to the incident report.

WACH said it wasn't clear whether Deandre was the man accused in said incidents but the Washington Post confirmed Thursday that it was him.

"Pentland has said he feared for his and his wife’s safety, and the young man is accused of earlier assaults," The Washington Post reported.

Two reports of alleged assault were also made against the young man after deputies responded Monday, according to the sheriff’s department, and they are being investigated. The young man has “an underlying medical condition that may explain the behavior exhibited in the alleged incidents,” the agency said.

On April 8, one incident report says, the man allegedly put his arm around a woman’s waist, put his hand down the right side of her shorts and then put his arm back around her waist as her pants were partly down. On April 10, another report alleges the man repeatedly picked up a baby without permission and tried to walk away.

Pentland told officers who had responded to a “physical dispute” Monday that he pushed the man “in fear for his safety and the safety of his wife,” according to the incident report.

Deputies were told that the man approached “several neighbors in a threatening manner” and that someone had asked Pentland to “intervene,” the agency said in a statement.

Pentagon Refuses to Comment on US Abandoning Black Sea Transit

Earlier, reports surfaced that the US Department of Defense scrapped its plans to have two US Navy destroyers undertake a Black Sea transit over concerns regarding escalating tensions between Russia and Ukraine.

The US Department of Defense has refused to comment on whether it had intentionally abandoned plans to conduct a Black Sea transit, noting instead that it has carried out such operations before and would continue to do so.

John Kirby, a Pentagon spokesperson, sidestepped questions on the matter from reporters on Friday, informing members of the media that the US defense agency has been "conducting warship operations in the Black Sea on a routine basis, and this will continue."

Kirby further stated that "we don’t talk about maritime operational movements in and out of specific choke points."

However, he did acknowledge Russia's move to implement restrictions in parts of the Black Sea, using the opportunity to blast Moscow for its actions.

"This will be just the latest example of its ongoing campaign to undermine and destabilize Ukraine," Kirby said. "We call on Russia to cease its harassment of vessels in the region and reverse its buildup of forces along Ukraine’s border and occupied Ukraine."

Hong Kong billionaire and newspaper tycoon Jimmy Lai gets 12 months in prison for role in anti-Beijing protests

A prominent businessman and media tycoon has been jailed for one year by Chinese authorities for organizing and taking part in the unauthorized demonstrations which swept across Hong Kong in 2019 and 2020.

On Friday, Jimmy Lai, a Hong Kong billionaire and media tycoon was sentenced to one year in prison. The 73-year-old was one of nine in court on Friday who received sentences for their roles in an anti-Beijing protest which took place on August 18, 2019. Three of the nine also faced charges relating to a demonstration on August 31.

The August 18 protest was one of the largest to rock the former British colony, with an estimated 1.7 million people marching in opposition to a bill which would allow suspects to be extradited to mainland China for trial.

Chinese state news agency, Global Times, claimed Lai has also been charged with another two national security law offenses. The first being conspiracy to collude with foreign countries or forces to endanger national security and, the second, conspiracy to do one or a series of acts tending to pervert the course of justice.

Beijing denied it suppressed democracy in Hong Kong after it cracked down on protests against the National Security Law, claiming its actions are aimed at ensuring Hong Kong is governed by Chinese patriots and falls in line with the rest of the country, ensuring stability across China’s territory.Earlier this week, Lai, who is also a British national, published a hand-written letter in his Apple Daily newspaper and called on his fellow journalists to “seek justice.” “As long as we are not blinded by unjust temptations, as long as we do not let evil get its way through us, we are fulfilling our responsibility,” he wrote.

The CIA Used To Infiltrate The Media. Now The CIA Is The Media.

Back in the good old days, when things were more innocent and simple, the psychopathic Central Intelligence Agency had to covertly infiltrate the news media to manipulate the information Americans were consuming about their nation and the world. Nowadays, there is no meaningful separation between the news media and the CIA at all.

Journalist Glenn Greenwald just highlighted an interesting point about the reporting by The New York Times on the so-called “Bountygate” story the outlet broke in June of last year about the Russian government trying to pay Taliban-linked fighters to attack US soldiers in Afghanistan.

“One of the NYT reporters who originally broke the Russia bounty story (originally attributed to unnamed ‘intelligence officials’) say today that it was a CIA claim,” Greenwald tweeted. “So media outlets — again — repeated CIA stories with no questioning: congrats to all.”

Indeed, NYT’s original story made no mention of CIA involvement in the narrative, citing only “officials,” yet this latest article speaks as though it had been informing its readers of the story’s roots in the lying, torturing, drug-running, warmongering Central Intelligence Agency from the very beginning. The author even writes “The New York Times first reported last summer the existence of the C.I.A.’s assessment,” with the hyperlink leading to the initial article which made no mention of the CIA. It wasn’t until later that The New York Times began reporting that the CIA was looking into the Russian bounties allegations at all.

This would be the same “Russian bounties” narrative which was discredited all the way back in September when the top US military official in Afghanistan said no satisfactory evidence had surfaced for the allegations, which was further discredited today with a new article by The Daily Beast titled “U.S. Intel Walks Back Claim Russians Put Bounties on American Troops”.

The Daily Beast, which has itself uncritically published many articles promoting the CIA “Bountygate” narrative, reports the following:

It was a blockbuster story about Russia’s return to the imperial “Great Game” in Afghanistan. The Kremlin had spread money around the longtime central Asian battlefield for militants to kill remaining U.S. forces. It sparked a massive outcry from Democrats and their #resistance amplifiers about the treasonous Russian puppet in the White House whose admiration for Vladimir Putin had endangered American troops.

But on Thursday, the Biden administration announced that U.S. intelligence only had “low to moderate” confidence in the story after all. Translated from the jargon of spyworld, that means the intelligence agencies have found the story is, at best, unproven — and possibly untrue.

Biden Nominee Skates Through Confirmation Hearing Without Facing Questions About Her Handling Of Steele Dossier

A State Department nominee who approved meetings for dossier author Christopher Steele in 2016 avoided questions on the matter during her Senate confirmation hearing Thursday.

Victoria Nuland was not asked about her authorization of meetings with Steele or her role disseminating information from the ex-spy’s infamous dossier.

Nuland, who served in the Obama State Department, is up for nomination for undersecretary of state for political affairs.

State Department nominee Victoria Nuland coasted through her Senate confirmation hearing on Thursday without facing any questions about her role disseminating information from former British spy Christopher Steele during the 2016 presidential campaign.

Nuland, who is nominated for undersecretary of state of political affairs, authorized two meetings during a previous stint at the State Department between government officials and Steele, a former British spy who compiled a dossier alleging collusion between the Trump campaign and Russian government.

She also pressed the FBI in the weeks before the 2016 election to investigate Steele’s allegations, according to government documents released last year.

House and Senate Republicans who investigated the origins of the Trump-Russia probe have since 2017 asked questions about the State Department and Nuland’s contacts with Steele, who investigated Donald Trump on behalf of the Clinton campaign and DNC.

Igor Danchenko, who was Steele’s lone source for the dossier, worked as an analyst at Brookings until 2010.

White House Won’t Say If Special Forces Will Leave Afghanistan Under Biden’s Withdrawal Plan

US officials told The New York Times that a 'shadowy' combination of special ops, Pentagon contractors, and intel operatives will likely stay

After President Biden formally announced his plan to withdraw from Afghanistan by September 11th, White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki was asked if special operations soldiers would remain in the country under the plan, which she declined to answer.

“I’m obviously not going to get into operational specifics from the podium,” Psaki said when asked if the removal of combat troops by September 11th will include withdrawing Special Forces.

“I will say that we may — we will have what is needed to secure a diplomatic presence,” Psaki added. “And those assessments will be made over the coming months and obviously led by the Defense Department and State Department in coordination.”

The US officially has 2,500 troops in Afghanistan currently, although reports have said the number is closer to 3,500. Besides soldiers, the US also has thousands of contractors working for the US military in the country. According to numbers released in January, there are over 18,000 Pentagon contractors in Afghanistan.

When Biden’s plan was first reported on Tuesday, current and former US officials told The New York Times that some sort of US presence will continue in Afghanistan.

The Times report reads:

A new Project Veritas video show CNN Host Brian Stelter being pressed on the group’s recent trove of undercover videos revealing CNN Technical Director Charlie Chester admitting the network engages in “propaganda.”

The Reliable Sources host can be seen plodding around the network’s New York offices wearing a sweater with the text “JOURNALISM MATTERS. Now More Than Ever.” Despite the message on Stelter’s sweater, he refuses to answer questions posed by the undercover Project Veritas journalist.

“Is Charlie Chester still employed at CNN,” the Project Veritas journalist asks before adding “Do you report any news that Jeff Zucker doesn’t directly tell you to report?” in reference to a recent #ExposeCNN campaign.
