best explanation I have seen suggests that the sun novas every 12k years and then evaporates a lot of water which in turn turns into an ice age at the same time the pole shifts. takes about 300 years to wring the water out of the atmosphere and thousands more for the ice to melt. all the stories about the dark side of the moon start to make some sense as well and our going back there now because it never faces the sun and the lack of atmosphere greatly reduces length of the aftermath. the tiny glass beads found both on earth and the moon seem to support the idea as well. the last solar maximum in 1957 seems to have freaked out a lot of people in science and government. apparently they thought it might happen then, started looking for evidence and decided the next cycle would be the big one (again). 87 years puts it at puts it at 2044. My hypothosis is that they 500M number they are shooting for is because they think they can support that many people through ice age, and they want have wanted the reduction sooner than latter because they want all the extra resources to stockpile until it happens.
