The issue of the circumcision back then was that there were gentiles that wanted to practice judaism, but the Jews were a proud folk and didn't think gentiles was worthy enough to be considered a Jew, so they decided to make the gentiles do the circumcision as a sign of what they are willing to do, to become a Jew.
Also circumcision effects the sensitivity of the penis. I don't remember which way it works, but it's less sensitive during sex which is a form of self denial.
