Why The Queen is reportedly leaving Buckingham Palace following Prince Philip’s death

It’s been her permanent residence since she was crowned in 1953

The funeral of Prince Philip took place yesterday (Saturday 17 April) in St George’s Chapel in Windsor, following the death of the Duke of Edinburgh last Friday (9 April) at the age of 99.

According to HELLO!, the Queen is set to leave Buckingham Palace, which has been her official residence since 1953 and is where she gave birth to Prince Charles and Prince Andrew. HELLO! reports that royal staff have been told that while the Queen will still spend summer at Balmoral Castle in Scotland and Christmas in Sandringham House, she is expected to move permanently to Windsor Castle.

It is likely that Windsor holds a special significance for the Queen: it is where Prince Philip, her husband of 73 years, has been buried and it’s where the royal couple previously spent every Easter together before choosing to isolate there after the first national lockdown was announced back in March 2020.

Prior to the coronavirus pandemic, the Duke of Edinburgh had been predominantly based at Wood Farm cottage on the Sandringham estate, whereas the Queen stayed in Buckingham Palace due to her work commitments. As lockdown restrictions unfolded again in November 2020, however, Prince Philip purposely returned to Windsor Castle to spend the second lockdown with the Queen, celebrating their 73rd wedding anniversary together on 20 November. According to Vanity Fair, lockdown was a happy time for the royal couple, who were able to spend more time together: enjoying daily walks around the private gardens and dining together each evening.

Prince Philip’s funeral, which took place yesterday, abided by coronavirus restrictions, meaning that only 30 guests were able to attend (pre-pandemic there’d be an expected 800 mourners attending). Another side effect of the COVID-19 rules was that the Queen had to sit alone during the chapel service, as mourners were required to sit two metres apart from anyone not in their household.

Our thoughts are with the entire royal family during this very sad time.

The Queen to leave Buckingham Palace permanently following Prince Philip's death

The Queen to leave Buckingham Palace permanently following Prince Philip's death - The Duke of Edinburgh died on 9 April

Her Majesty is said to be leaving her official London residence Buckingham Palace in favour of Windsor, according to The Daily Mail.

While she will still summer at Balmoral and spend Christmas at Sandringham, royal staff are believed to have been told that Windsor Castle will be known as her permanent home moving forward.

It has been claimed that while the monarch will return to London for work, it is unlikely that she will ever spend another night at the palace.

Windsor Castle will no doubt hold even more meaning for Her Majesty in the wake of her husband's death.

Following Philip's passing on 9 April, his coffin was placed inside the Queen's Private Chapel at the castle, which he designed himself after overseeing the restoration project following a fire on the grounds in 1992.

According to ITV, this is where Philip's coffin has been resting since his death. The room is next to Her Majesty's private apartments so Philip has been close by to his wife – however, his coffin will be moved ahead of the Procession on Saturday.

Following the funeral, the Duke will be laid to rest in the Royal Vault of St. George's Chapel at Windsor Castle, but this will not be his final resting place.

Philip will eventually be transferred to the church's King George VI memorial chapel to lie alongside his wife of 73 years when the time comes.

The memorial chapel also houses the remains of the Queen's sister Princess Margaret, who died in 2002, and her parents, King George VI and the Queen Mother.

The former King was only 56 when he passed away in Sandringham from a coronary thrombosis; his widow Elizabeth, meanwhile, lived until she was 101 and sadly died seven weeks after her daughter Margaret.

A black stone slab is set into the floor of the private chapel and features the names George VI and Elizabeth in gold lettering and is accompanied by the couple's years of birth and death.

George Floyd's family and community deserved for his killer to be held accountable.

Today, they got that accountability.
