Anon used to regularly visit a remainder book store. These outlets distribute the unsold books at vastly reduced prices. Political biographies were regularly available at something like a 90% discount on price.

Would any business continue to do this again and again? Or were the books printed in full knowledge that the advance would never be recouped?

Sometimes these deals are presented as a prestige exercise for the publisher concerned. They don't seem to be commercially viable however and it would be interesting to look at the ownership and public accounts of some of the larger publishing houses and see just where the money is coming from for these advances?
