Warning Signals In Our School Curriculum.

As parents, we are always concerned with the company our children keep, where they hang out, what content they consume online or on tv. These are the day-to-day challenges of parenthood. One place we should not have to be stressed about what our children are exposed to is the classroom. It is a place of learning, administered by professionals. Unfortunately, recent events in our school system have given parents reason to worry.

A few weeks ago, a video was shown in two remote, second grade classes at North Street School that was supposed to help children cope with their fears. Shockingly, five minutes into the video appears an animated image of a man with an erect p-nis, standing in front of a small child. Suffice to say it was wholly inappropriate to be shown in any elementary school setting.

Although that was a glaring example, it is not the only one that parents will find disturbing. Seventh graders in the GPS System have been asked to fill out worksheets that are seemingly aimed at a sort of “privilege curriculum.” One worksheet asks students to; “Rate how responsible you feel for those who do not have the same things, opportunities and experiences in life as you.” Students are then asked to rate how “responsible” they feel on a 1-10 basis.

An equally disturbing vocabulary list assigned, asks twelve and thirteen year old students about their familiarity with certain vocabulary words; marginalized, stereotype, underrepresented, minority, to be the “other” etc. In a Macintosh Survey distributed to seventh graders, students are asked to answer yes/no questions like; “I will not be expected to change my name when I get married”; “If a traffic cop pulls me and my family over, I can be sure I haven’t been singled out because of my race”; and “When I am told about my national heritage or “civilization” I am shown that people of my color made it what it is”; “If I should need to move I can be pretty sure my family can rent or purchase housing in an area which we can afford and in which I would feel comfortable living."

At GHS, tenth graders were assigned to read a pamphlet entitled “The Miseducation Of The American Boy.” It is essentially a primer on what is “wrong” with boys. The language and graphic nature of topics is absolutely not suitable to be taught in school. Here are some examples of dialogue;

(Apologies in advance for these offense quotes, but bear in mind our children where assigned to read them)

• “It’s hysterical to surprise a buddy with a meme where a woman is being gagged by a p-nis, her mascara mixed with her tears.

• “He may or may not send funny texts to friends about girls that need to be r-ped.”

• “We definitely say “f-ck” a lot. And we call each other “p-ssies” and “b-tches”.”

• “Was the first time I ever saw a v-gina……stick your fingers up there and make the “come here” motion.”

What on earth does ANY of this have to do with educating our children? This is absolutely not the purvey of public school administrators nor does it meet the measure of what core curriculum should be. To be clear, this is not the fault of our teachers. They have worked tirelessly during extremely tough circumstances this past year to do their best to educate our children. They should not bear the burden, nor be put in a position of having to determine whether the curriculum is suitable for their students. It is supposed to be done for them.

In Greenwich, when it comes to our schools and our children’s education, we tend to spend way too much time focusing on buildings and amenities, and not focusing on what is happening inside our children’s classrooms. That is where the rubber meets the road. It is where our children’s futures are shaped. As a taxpayer in our town, I am offended that this type of “curriculum” has ANY place in a classroom in our community. We should be appalled by it, and we should hold the school administration responsible for it. Our children deserve better.
