Chlorinated swimming pool water can inactivate the virus that causes COVID-19 in just 30 seconds, a study found as indoor pools re-open across England this week.

Virologists from Imperial College London studied the impact of varying concentrations of chlorine in water on the SARS-CoV-2 virus.

The findings suggest that the risk of COVID-19 transmission via swimming pool water is 'incredibly' low, the researchers reported.

The investigation was commissioned by Swim England and the Water Babies swim school, with support from the Royal Life Saving Society.

'We performed these experiments at our high containment laboratories in London,' explained study author Wendy Barclay, of the Imperial College London.

'Under these safe conditions we are able to measure the ability of the virus to infect cells, which is the first step in its transmission.

'By mixing the virus with swimming pool water that was delivered to us by the Water Babies team, we could show that the virus does not survive in swimming pool water โ€” it was no longer infectious.

'That, coupled with the huge dilution factor of virus that might find its way into a swimming pool from an infected person, suggests the chance of contracting COVID-19 from swimming pool water is negligible.'

In the study, Professor Barclay and colleagues found that a concentration of free chlorine of 1.5 milligrams per litre and a pH of between 7โ€“7.2 reduced the infectivity of the SARS-CoV-2 more than 1,000 fold within just 30 seconds.

Further tests using different chlorine concentrations and pH levels concluded that the chlorine in swimming pool waster is more effective with a low pH level.

This, the team said, is inline with current guidance for swimming pool operation โ€” which recommends a free chlorine concentration of 1.5 milligrams per litre and a pH level of 7.0.

'These findings suggest the risk of transmission from swimming pool water is low,' said Swim England chief executive Jane Nickerson.

The study, she continued, 'adds to the evidence that swimming pools can be safe and secure environments if appropriate measures are taken.

'Itโ€™s fantastic news for the operators, our members and clubs who take part in all our amazing sports, recreational swimmers and those who rely on the water to stay physically active.

'The findings confirm the guidance we have issued to operators is correct and will give everyone returning to the water from Monday [April 12] peace of mind that they are doing so safely.'

'We are excited about these findings as we prepare to restart our classes and plan to welcome back families, littles ones and customers to indoor swimming pools across the country,' said Water Babies founder Paul Thompson.

'It has been fantastic to work closely with Professor Barclay and her team at Imperial College and collaborate with leading bodies Swim England and RLSS on this world-leading research.'

'We know swimming has multiple benefits for physical and mental health for both children and adults of all ages and weโ€™re looking forward to our lessons restarting.'

The full findings of the study have yet to be published in a peer-reviewed journal.

Israel said probing link between Pfizer shot and heart problem in men under 30

Leaked Health Ministry probe raises concerns as 62 cases of myocarditis found out of 5 million vaccinated โ€” most after second dose; 2 deaths, but no direct link established

Details from an unpublished Israeli Health Ministry report into the side effects of the Pfizer-BioNtech vaccine have raised concerns that there could be a link between the second shot and several dozen cases of myocarditis, an inflammation of the heart muscle, particularly in men under 30, Channel 12 reported Friday.

The concerns come from an intermediate report that was presented to ministry heads and to Pfizer in recent weeks, the TV report said. Excerpts from the leaked report stressed that investigators had not conclusively proved a link, but that they had significant concerns.

The report said that out of more than 5 million people vaccinated in Israel, there were 62 recorded cases of myocarditis in the days after the shot. It found that 56 of those cases came after the second shot and most of the affected were men under 30.

The report said that 60 of the patients were treated and released from hospital in good condition. Two of the patients, who were reportedly healthy until receiving the vaccination, including a 22-year-old woman and a 35-year-old man, died.

โ€œThe findings were presented to the Pfizer company who replied that they had not had similar reports in the rest of the world and would examine the data,โ€ an excerpt from the report said, adding that the details had also been sent to the US FDA and CDC, who were also investigating.

The report was authored by senior ministry officials led by Prof. Dror Mevorach, head of one of the COVID-19 units at Hadassah Hospital Ein Kerem.

The authors surmised that โ€œone possible reason for lack of similar findings in other countries was the low rate of vaccinations among young people.โ€

โ€œThere is specific concern regarding the frequency of the occurrence observed in men under 30 in the days immediately after the second shot,โ€ they wrote. โ€œAt this stage, according to initial findings that still need to be verified, there is an impression that the number (of cases) is higher than would be expected, especially for those under 30.โ€

The report found that of those who received the second dose, 1-in-100,000 had possible side effects of myocarditis; however, this number rose to 1-in-20,000 among those aged 16-30.

โ€œWe cannot yet tell if there are more cases than normal or if there are similar numbers annually and the proximity is just a coincidence. Efforts to collect more data are continuing,โ€ the report said.

At least 10 rockets fired at Israel from Gaza; IDF strikes Hamas post

No injuries or damage reported in rocket salvos; Iron Dome intercepts 4 projectiles; earlier Hamas held rallies in Strip calling to attack Israel, after fierce clashes in Jerusalem

Palestinian terrorists in the Gaza Strip fired at least 10 rockets toward Israel in two salvos Friday night, amid days of clashes in Jerusalem and the West Bank that involved Palestinian and Israeli civilians as well as Israeli security forces.

There were no immediate reports of injuries or damage in the attacks.

Around 11 p.m. Friday the IDF said three rockets were launched from Gaza, with the Iron Dome system intercepting one of the projectiles. Two other rockets fell in an open area and there were no reports of injuries or damage. Iron Dome is programmed to not deploy at rockets that are projected to hit non-populated areas.

The IDF said that in response to the attack, one of its tanks fired at a Hamas post in Gaza.

Then, around 2 a.m., rocket sirens were again activated several times in communities near Gaza, with seven more apparent rocket launches. Iron Dome was reported to intercept three of the rockets. It was not immediately clear where the others fell.

The rocket salvos came after hours the Hamas terror group that rules Gaza held a series of protests in the Strip and called for violence against Israel in the wake of fierce clashes Thursday in Jerusalem.

Addressing the protesters, senior Hamas leader Mahmoud Zahar condemned the decision of some Arab states to normalize relations with Israel last year and lashed out at the Palestinian Authority in the West Bank for continuing its security coordination with Israel.

โ€œAfter a long series of protests and demonstrations, we have reached the conclusion that without weapons, we cannot liberate our land, protect our holy sites, bringing back our people to their land or maintain our dignity,โ€ he said.
