Indonesia says 53 crew of lost sub are dead, wreckage found

Indonesia’s military has officially said all 53 crew members from a submarine that sank and broke apart last week are dead

Indonesia’s military on Sunday officially said all 53 crew members from a submarine that sank and broke apart last week are dead, and that search teams had located the vessel's wreckage on the ocean floor.

The grim announcement comes a day after Indonesia said the submarine was considered sunk, not merely missing, but did not explicitly say whether the crew was dead. Officials had also said the KRI Nanggala 402's oxygen supply would have run out early Saturday, three days after vessel went missing off the resort island of Bali.

“We received underwater pictures that are confirmed as the parts of the submarine, including its rear vertical rudder, anchors, outer pressure body, embossed dive rudder and other ship parts," military chief Hadi Tjahjanto told reporters in Bali on Sunday.

"With this authentic evidence, we can declare that KRI Nanggala 402 has sunk and all the crew members are dead,” Tjahjanto said.

An underwater robot equipped with cameras found the lost submarine was lying in at least three pieces on the ocean floor at a depth of 838 meters (2,750 feet), said Adm. Yudo Margono, the navy’s chief of staff.

That’s much deeper than the KRI Nanggala 402′s collapse depth of 200 meters (655 feet), at which point water pressure would be greater than the hull could withstand, according to earlier navy statements.

The wreckage is located 1,500 meters (yards) to the south of the site where the submarine last dove Wednesday, off Bali's northern coast, Margono said.

The underwater robot was deployed by Singaporean vessel MV Swift Rescue provided the images, while the Indonesian vessel KRI Rigel had scanned the area where the submarine was believed to have sank using multibeam sonar and a magnetometer, Tjahjanto said.

The cause of the disappearance was still uncertain. The navy had previously said an electrical failure could have left the submarine unable to execute emergency procedures to resurface.

An American reconnaissance plane, a P-8 Poseidon, landed early Saturday and had been set to join the search, along with 20 Indonesian ships, a sonar-equipped Australian warship and four Indonesian aircraft.

The German-built diesel-powered KRI Nanggala 402 had been in service in Indonesia since 1981 and was carrying 49 crew members and three gunners as well as its commander, the Indonesian Defense Ministry said.

Indonesia, the world’s largest archipelago nation with more than 17,000 islands, has faced growing challenges to its maritime claims in recent years, including numerous incidents involving Chinese vessels near the Natuna islands.

Russia restricts movement of 'foreign warships' in Black Sea

Russia has said several areas of the Black Sea near the Crimean coast will be off limits to foreign warships, in an anticipated move that has drawn much criticism from NATO and Ukraine.

Russia closed off several areas of the Black Sea to foreign warships on Saturday, according to Defense Ministry statements reported by Russian media. The restrictions are due to last from April 24 until October 24.

The ministry said the restrictions would apply to an area along the Crimean coastline between Sevastopol and Gurzuf, an area near the Kerch Peninsula, and a small area near the western tip of Crimea, according to Russian news agency RIA.

Russia annexed Crimea in 2014, and claims the areas in question as its territorial waters. However, the annexation has never been officially recognized by the international community.

The move comes amid increased tensions between Russia and Ukraine. Russia pulled back its troops from Crimea and the Ukrainian border last week.

Ukraine says move 'illegal'

The Ukrainian Foreign Ministry said on Thursday that Russia's plan to close off parts of the Black Sea to foreign warships was illegal.

German president urged to withhold medal for Catholic bishop

Sex abuse victims have urged the German president not to award an Order of Merit — equal to a knighthood — to Munich's bishop, Cardinal Reinhard Marx.

Catholic victims of sex abuse urged German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier on Saturday not to give one of the country's top honors to Cardinal Reinhard Marx.

The bishop of Munich served as chair of Germany's Catholic Bishops' Conference until 2020. Although outspoken for victims in recent years, Marx also stands accused of concealing cases, including a priest's misuse of a woman employee and forcing her to abort a pregnancy in 1989.

He is now expected to receive Germany's top Order of Merit with Star — what in Anglo-Saxon countries would be a knighthood — from Germany's President Frank-Walter Steinmeier.

Victims' representative threatens to give back his own medal

A group of sex abuse victims say that honoring Marx in this way would render their efforts to shed light on church cover-ups "valueless" and "absurd." Their representative Peter Bringmann-Henselder, himself a recipient of the Order of Merit with Star, said he would hand back his own medal if next Friday's award to Cardinal Marx went ahead.

Bringmann-Henselder was given the medal for his work on supporting victims and is currently serving as a member of Cologne diocese's Ö« Advisory Committee for Affected Persons [victims]. He argued against honoring Marx in an open letter carried by Dom Radio, Cologne's Catholic media outlet.

https://nypost.com/2021/04/24/old-joe-biden-vs-new-joe-biden-goodwin/

On the surface, it seems an odd question about a 78-year-old man who has spent nearly 50 years in Washington. But the new Biden, the President Biden, doesn’t sound and act like the former senator and vice president.

In fact, this Biden is so dramatically different that it’s not clear if we should take him either seriously or literally.

Who the hell is this guy?

The old Biden was a windbag who wouldn’t shut up, the new Biden is a silent Sam, especially when it comes to answering press questions. He ducks, dodges, hides and mumbles.

Thai police empty-handed so far in search for prominent monk

February 17, 2017

Thai police who unsuccessfully searched a vast Buddhist temple for a prominent monk accused of financial wrongdoing said Friday they will arrest him whenever and wherever they can.

About 3,000 police who raided the Dhammakaya sect temple north of Bangkok spent a second day in vain seeking its chief, Phra Dhammajayo, who is accused of accepting $40 million in embezzled money.

Aside from finding a room on Thursday with medical equipment that was said to have belonged to the elusive monk, their search has proved fruitless. Dhammajayo has not been seen in public since his 72nd birthday last April, and his fellow senior monks have been unclear about his whereabouts, suggesting he may still be at the temple but insisting they have not seen him in months. Since first being summoned by police early last year, he has repeatedly pleaded illness for his failure to turn himself in.

Dhammajayo has been charged with money-laundering and receiving stolen property. His defenders say he did not know the money was tainted. Some devotees believe his legal troubles are politically motivated because the temple and its followers are seen as supporters of former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra, who was deposed in a 2006 military coup. Thailand has military government.

The head of the Department of Special Investigation, Thailand’s FBI, told reporters that if Dhammajayo is not found in three days at the temple, they will continue to pursue him because the charges won’t expire for 15 years.

“Once we have inspected every building and every suspected part, if that is done, then we will re-evaluate the situation again,” Paisit Wongmuang said Friday. “If we do not get him today, whenever we know where he is, we can still arrest him for prosecution.”

Paisit said the discovery that Dhammajayo was not present in the room with the medical equipment proved that his claim of being too sick to appear was false — that finding a patient’s bed without a patient in it proved he was mobile.

Police said they inspected an underground tunnel at the temple suspected to be an escape route but found it was a water pump facility.
