My take is that the first thing anyone would do, and that would be the repair guy and LE, when they first get physical machine is to image the drive.
With the image you have the complete machine state from when the repair shop got it. That would include all original hardware ID's.
Contents of the image would verify the owner.
Images can be copied, like files. There's more than just the image Rudy had out there.
If the physical laptop were present, the FBI (or whomever) would have taken it.
Rudy has copies of all his material off-site; I'm almost certain of that.
