The Afghanistan withdrawal that could have been

1/2

Today should have been the day our troops came home from Afghanistan. All President Biden had to do was follow the plan. Former President Trump set May 1, 2021 as the day to end our military presence in Afghanistan while the Biden administration moved it to Sept. 11. This push was not due to strategy or inability to execute, the military was aware and had made plans to ensure the original execution date.

It appears this was a decision based solely on politics and an unwillingness to share the victory with the previous administration, as President Biden has not given any sound policy reason for moving the date. President Biden moved this date at the cost of roughly $7.5 billion for those four months, the risk that we lose more lives overseas, and the desecration of a day that should stand alone, unclouded by politics.

I welcome the decision to withdraw, as do thousands of veterans and their family members. All Americans must honor the sacrifice of those who served and those who made the ultimate sacrifice for our nation in that far off land. They are American heroes. But it is well past time for a new approach, not just to Afghanistan but foreign policy and the use of military might.

During my time in the Trump administration, I witnessed firsthand President Trump’s monumental effort to undo decades of groupthink in regard to our efforts in the Middle East. He should have received cooperation, but instead he got pushback from “experts” and senior decision-makers who had made little to no progress in this field. Most fretted too much and too often about what might be lost by moving on from Afghanistan instead of focusing on the costs of not moving on. The result of the former has been nearly two decades of sustained operations, even though it had become increasingly clear that a traditional victory was not possible. The “experts” did nothing more than muddy what should always be our guiding principle: If it isn’t good for America, we shouldn’t do it.

Without any basis in fact, the opinion of far too many was grounded in political bias. The opposition to staying in this forever war was met with internal hesitation and resulted in headlines such as, “Trump's Afghan Troop Withdrawal Is a Gift to the Taliban.” All the while, national security pundits beat the same drum that they’ve been beating for decades now. “Success is just around the corner,” or “Give it one more year,” were their mantras. More troops. More money. More blood, sacrifice, and loss, and no gain for Americans.

It is important to recall that the Taliban are Afghans, and over the past decade we have been trying to nation-build in the midst of what amounts to a civil war. During his presidency, Trump made his intent clear when he announced his South Asia strategy in 2017 stating, “…we will not dictate to the Afghan people how to live or how to govern their own complex society.” But the same national security pundits I mentioned previously, including some senior officials in the Trump administration, pushed back on the president purely out of habit and a flawed view of the strategic environment we faced as a country. Dangerously, while these same pundits were pontificating and were fixated on a future, potential threat in Afghanistan, another very real, present threat emerged: a China focused on economically capturing the world.

Thankfully, Trump pushed back against the momentum of falsehoods and hand-wringing that former House Speaker Newt Gingrich (R-Ga.) called “deeply resisted change.” He continually tasked his National Security team for solutions to ending the “infinity war.” His objective was to secure an ending that would still preserve our national interests and protect lives.

Ultimately, it was President Trump’s and Secretary of State Michael Pompeo’s efforts that led to the establishment of a Special Representative for Afghanistan Reconciliation. It was President Trump who pushed for direct negotiations with the Taliban. The Trump administration saw zero deaths to American forces from Taliban attacks after his personal involvement secured a key agreement with their forces. His work and his policies put our national security interests above all others and our strategy finally respected the value of human capital that had long been wasted in forever wars. It’s because of this, that an option for a safe, full withdrawal is even possible. President Trump had the grace to call President Biden’s troop withdrawal effort “wonderful,” and it’d be nice for President Biden to do the same.

Mitt Romney booed at raucous Utah GOP convention as speakers attack the Biden agenda

With 2,145 of registered delegates in attendance at in-person convention — and masks in short supply — state’s Republican leaders urge party unity after a divisive year.

| Updated: 5:46 p.m.

Sen. Mitt Romney was lustily booed by the more than 2,100 Republican delegates who packed into the Maverik Center on Saturday for the party’s state convention.

“Aren’t you embarrassed?” said Romney trying to deflect the chorus of catcalls that greeted him as he took the stage.

“I’m a man who says what he means, and you know I was not a fan of our last president’s character issues,” said Romney as delegates attempted to shout him down. Accusations that Romney was a “traitor” or “communist” flew from the crowd like so many poison darts.

The cacophony of disapproval only ended after outgoing party chair Derek Brown scolded delegates to “show respect” for Romney.

“You can boo all you like,” said Romney. “I’ve been a Republican all of my life. My dad was the governor of Michigan and I was the Republican nominee for president in 2012.”

Romney wasn’t the only recipient of boos from the crowd. Gov. Spencer Cox also caught a measure of disapproval.

“I know some of you hate me for some of the decisions I had to make,” said Cox as he took the stage to a smattering of boos from delegates upset with COVID-19 restrictions. “But I want to point out that some of you haven’t been paying attention.”

Cox touted the state’s rapidly improving economy following the COVID-related downturn, noting Utah was one of two states to see net job growth during the pandemic. He also said the state did not go as far as some other states with virus-related restrictions.

“We banned government vaccine passports,” said Cox to cheers, referencing a bill passed during the 2021 Utah Legislature. But that bill only blocked the state government from requiring vaccines. Private businesses can still require vaccinations for customers.

“We’ve also had zero restrictions on religious gatherings since October, and after this school year ends, there won’t be any more masks in schools,” said Cox.

Sen. Mike Lee drew a standing ovation as he took the podium and, hand on his heart, he cheered delegates in attendance “for taking action! Thank you!,” he said, calling their presence “an act of faith in the future.”

In a hardline speech, he blasted Democrats and invoked the U.S. Constitution and Founding Fathers, whom he praised for constraining government power on behalf of the people. He underscored their guarantees of unfettered gun ownership and limited intrusion in the lives of private citizens.

Quoting George Washington, Lee said U.S. exceptionalism rested in faith in its citizenry, not the government. “It means freedom,” he said, adding that Democrats hated Republicans and decrying their new proposals under the Biden administration.

“Their whole agenda is wrapped up around one idea,” Lee said, “unquestionable trust in government.”

He also assailed proposals to increase the number of judges on the U.S. Supreme Court as “a bone-headed idea,” saying it “would destroy judicial independence.” New Democratic efforts to reform U.S. elections, Lee added said, were a move “to destroy local control.”

“There are some truths we can never betray,” Lee told the crowd. “We are the stewards of our own destiny.” He said Biden did not share that view.

“He wants us dependent on government,” Lee said, adding the president also wanted “to extend lockdowns. We want to end them!” The senator quipped that the Centers for Disease Control — responsible for guiding the nation’s health policies during the pandemic — “was less about disease and more about control.”

Lt. Gov. Deidre Henderson, too, underscored a perceived threat from Washington to Utah values, and she accused Biden of jeopardizing the state’s energy sector with recent limits on development on public lands. Henderson said the Democratic-controlled Congress wanted to raise taxes irresponsibly and that it had thrown trillions in pandemic relief funds at the states during the health crisis.

“We all know there’s nothing more expensive than free money,” she said.

And like other speakers, she urged party members to put aside divisions. “We are at a crossroads,” she said. “There is much at stake.”

Congressman Chris Stewart called the Biden administration’s approach “radical socialism,” criticizing its leaders — House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, he said “kind of sucks” — and he singled out the New Green Deal, proposed in some Democratic circles to address the climate change emergency.

“You’d think they’d run out of dumb ideas, but they don’t,” Stewart said, to cheers from the audience. He then accused that the media of intentional bias, echoing a common theme struck by former President Donald Trump.

“They are actively deceptive,” he said. “They lie to you.”

Congressman Burgess Owens offered deep gratitude for Utah’s focus on family, sense of volunteerism and respect for racial diversity. “We’re the least racist state in the country and the least racist country in the world,” he said.

“We do not apologize for who we are,” said Owens. “We love family, God, country and we respect women. That is who are.”

76000 California Violent, Repeat Felons Get Earlier Releases, Gavin Newsom

BY THE ASSOCIATED PRESS May 1, 2021 Updated: May 1, 2021

SACRAMENTO—California is giving 76,000 inmates, including violent and repeat felons, the opportunity to leave prison earlier as the state aims to further trim the population of what once was the nation’s largest state correctional system.

More than 63,000 inmates convicted of violent crimes will be eligible for good behavior credits that shorten their sentences by one-third instead of the one-fifth that had been in place since 2017. That includes nearly 20,000 inmates who are serving life sentences with the possibility of parole.

The new rules take effect Saturday but it will be months or years before any inmates go free earlier. Corrections officials say the goal is to reward inmates who better themselves while critics said the move will endanger the public.

Under the change, more than 10,000 prisoners convicted of a second serious but nonviolent offense under the state’s “three strikes” law will be eligible for release after serving half their sentences. That’s an increase from the current time-served credit of one-third of their sentence.

The same increased release time will apply to nearly 2,900 nonviolent third strikers, the corrections department projected.

Also as of Saturday, all minimum-security inmates in work camps, including those in firefighting camps, will be eligible for the same month of earlier release for every month they spend in the camp, regardless of the severity of their crime.

The changes were approved this week by the state Office of Administrative Law.

“The goal is to increase incentives for the incarcerated population to practice good behavior and follow the rules while serving their time, and participate in rehabilitative and educational programs, which will lead to safer prisons,” department spokeswoman Dana Simas said in a statement.

“Additionally, these changes would help to reduce the prison population by allowing incarcerated persons to earn their way home sooner,” she said.

Simas provided the emergency regulations and estimates of how many inmates they will affect at the request of The Associated Press.

Simas said the department was granted authority to make the changes through the rulemaking process and under the current budget. By making them “emergency regulations” the agency could impose the new rules without public comment.

The department now must submit permanent regulations next year. They will be considered a public hearing and opportunity for public comment.

Kent Scheidegger, legal director of the Criminal Justice Legal Foundation that represents crime victims, said the notion that the credits are for good behavior is a misnomer.

“You don’t have to be good to get good time credits. People who lose good time credits for misconduct get them back, they don’t stay gone,” he said. “They could be a useful device for managing the population if they had more teeth in them. But they don’t. They’re in reality just a giveaway.”

Republican state Sen. Jim Nielsen, who once headed the state parole board, criticized Gov. Gavin Newsom’s administration for unilaterally deciding to make the changes.

“He’s doing it on his own authority, instead of the will of the people through their elected representatives or directly through their own votes,” Nielsen said. “This is what I call Newsom’s time off for bad behavior. He’s putting us all at greater risk and there seems to be no end to the degree to which he wants to do that.”

California has been under court orders to reduce a prison population that peaked at 160,000 in 2006 and saw inmates being housed in gymnasiums and activity rooms. In 2011, the U.S. Supreme Court backed federal judges’ requirement that the state reduce overcrowding.

The population has been declining since the high court’s decision, starting when the state began keeping lower-level felons in county jails instead of state prisons. In 2014, voters reduced penalties for property and drug crimes. Two years later, voters approved allowing earlier parole for most inmates.

Before the COVID-19 pandemic hit, the population had dropped to 117,00 inmates. In the last year, 21,000 more have left state prisons—with about half being held temporarily in county jails.

Meantime, officials announced in mid-April that they will close a second prison as a result of the dwindling population, fulfilling a promise made by Newsom. California Correctional Center in Susanville will close by July 2022. Officials announced last fall that Deuel Vocational Institution in Tracy, east of San Francisco, will close by this October.

Many Democratic lawmakers and advocacy groups have been calling for further releases or shorter sentences. Californians United for a Responsible Budget, for instance, earlier in April said the state should shutter at least 10 more of its 35 prisons.
