Ducey: Arizonans receiving unemployment benefits must prove they are actively looking for work

By Steve Nielsen , Brent Corrado and Associated PressPublished 20 hours ago Updated 13 hours ago

PHOENIX - Arizona Governor Doug Ducey on Monday issued an executive order stating that residents who are receiving unemployment benefits must show proof that they are actively looking for work.

The new executive order rescinds a previous order issued last year that waived this requirement due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

"The Arizona Department of Economic Security will begin enforcing the reinstated requirement the week of Sunday, May 23," the governor's office said in a news release.

"A year out from the start of the pandemic, jobs and vaccines are readily available," Ducey said in a statement on May 3. "Arizonans are ready to get back to work. Our economy is booming, jobs need filling, more than 2 million Arizonans are fully vaccinated, and vaccination appointments are available to anyone who wants one."

Authorities on Monday reported 652 additional COVID-19 cases in Arizona, but no additional deaths from the virus.

Over 2.9 million residents — 41% of Arizona’s population — have received at least one shot with almost 2.3 million people fully vaccinated.

Health officials said more than 5 million vaccine doses have been administered in Arizona.

In all, 864,000 confirmed cases and 17,344 deaths from the virus have been reported in Arizona since the pandemic began.

Arizona businesses, families feeling the impact of the job hunt

It’s everything an owner would want to see after a tough year, a packed restaurant.

Cheba Hut restaurants have been busy in the Valley but there’s a problem behind the scenes.

"We’re trying to fill literally everything," says Dorian Lenz with Cheba Hut.

Dorian Lenz says competition for employees is so high that he can’t hire enough.

"The market is so open right now. Everyone is hiring. I’ll have 10 people apply, only 5 will sign up for interviews and only 2 will show up," Lenz says.

They’ve even had to close shops for days at a time because they don’t have the staff.

Elizabeth Newcomb, who is unemployed, says, "It was supposed to be a lift up not a lift back down and causing everyone to be homeless."

She's a single mom and her child care closed. She says getting a job isn’t an option until the world gets back to normal.

"Who’s going to watch my kids? I don’t have anyone to watch my kids, so he’s not thinking about the whole picture here, he’s not," Newcomb says of Ducey's order.

Pfizer earned $3.5 billion on COVID-19 vaccine in first quarter

BY NATHANIEL WEIXEL - 05/04/21 09:52 AM EDT

Pfizer's COVID-19 vaccine earned the company $3.5 billion in the first three months of this year, representing nearly a quarter of its total revenue, the company announced ahead of its earnings call Tuesday.

The drug giant said it expects the vaccine to earn about $26 billion in total revenue for 2021, based on signed contracts as of mid-April that call for 1.6 billion doses of the shot to be delivered this year.

The company's previous forecast was $15 billion for the year, but its first-quarter 2021 revenues alone totaled $14.6 billion, an increase of $4.5 billion, or 45 percent, compared to the first quarter of 2020.

Unlike several other rival companies that developed COVID-19 vaccines, Pfizer did not use federal funds and said it planned to make a profit. Democratic lawmakers and drug pricing advocates have raised concerns about Pfizer’s decision, arguing it could lead to price gouging after the initial pandemic period.

Johnson & Johnson and AstraZeneca both decided to sell their vaccines on a nonprofit basis during the pandemic. Moderna developed its vaccine with significant help from the federal government, but with no other products on the market decided to sell its vaccine at a profit.

Pfizer expects to have the capacity to manufacture at least 2.5 billion doses in 2021 and then an additional 3 billion doses in 2022, CEO Albert Bourla said in prepared remarks shared ahead of the call.

"Based on what we’ve seen, we believe that a durable demand for our COVID-19 vaccine — similar to that of the flu vaccines — is a likely outcome," Bourla said.

Pfizer said it plans to file for full approval from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) at the end of this month. The company also said it expects to apply for emergency use authorization for a booster shot that could protect against COVID-19 variants during the second half of July.

The New York Times reported Monday the FDA is poised to authorize Pfizer and BioNTech's coronavirus vaccine for adolescents ages 12-15 by early next week. And the company said it expects to have definitive trial results and plans to apply for authorization in September to use the vaccine in children between 2-5 years of age and 5-11 years of age.

As of Monday, Pfizer, along with its partner BioNTech, has shipped approximately 430 million doses of the vaccine to 91 countries and territories around the world, according to Bourla.

But the vast majority of the mRNA vaccines developed by Pfizer have been reserved by wealthy nations. Even as the company has pledged to supply millions of doses to the World Health Organization's Covax initiative, critics have been calling on Pfizer to do more.

Bourla said the company is committed to global availability of its COVID-19 vaccine.

"It is our hope that the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine will continue to have a global impact by helping to get the devastating pandemic under control and helping economies around the world not only open — but stay open — creating a scenario in which Pfizer can continue to be both a leader and a beneficiary," Bourla said.

Trump reportedly slams Biden on progressive agenda, pro-abortion stance

By Emily JacobsMay 4, 2021 | 10:13am | Updated

Former President Donald Trump took President Biden and Democrats to task over the rising influence of the progressive wing of the party, warning that his successor’s liberal agenda would hurt America from the economy to vaccine acceptance.

The 45th commander-in-chief pulled no punches while speaking at the Susan B. Anthony List’s Pro-Life Leaders Summit in Palm Beach, Fla., on Monday, according to Mollie Hemingway, senior editor at The Federalist who summarized his remarks on Twitter.

At one point, Hemingway wrote, Trump’s called Biden “one of the most extreme and radical presidents we’ve had and he’s not even aware of it.”

If his major legislative efforts are successful, Trump reportedly explained, major companies will start to leave the United States.

The White House unveiled details of Biden’s $1.8 trillion “American Families Plan” last week, despite Democrats in Congress not being finished writing his $2.3 trillion “American Jobs Plan.”

Additionally, all of this comes after passing his $1.9 trillion “American Rescue Plan” last month without any GOP support.

If the “families” and “jobs” packages do not come down in size, they will continue to have no GOP support.

Speaking about the event topic, Trump condemned Biden’s pro-abortion stance. He slammed Biden for being “kept in [the] basement for [the] campaign,” which allowed him to avoid elaborating on his stance on the issue.

Trump also took aim at how media outlets have covered the Biden presidency, drawing a double standard in coverage of Democrats and Republicans.

He referred specifically to Biden falling three times while walking up the stairs to Air Force One, which was widely seen on social media, and Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam refusing to resign after appearing to dress in blackface in his medical school yearbook.

Northam, Trump reportedly pointed out, faced more backlash over the blackface incident than he had for his controversial and alarming abortion comments.

Donald Trump reportedly criticized the double standard in covering Republicans and Democrats, citing President Joe Biden tripping up the stairs to Air Force One.

Northam came under fire for remarks he made about abortions in the third trimester in 2019.

At the time, in a 2019 radio interview, the governor defended late-term abortions in terms that appeared to defend infanticide and landed him in hot water.

“If a mother is in labor, I can tell you exactly what would happen. The infant would be delivered. The infant would be kept comfortable. The infant would be resuscitated if that’s what the mother and the family desired, and then a discussion would ensue between the physicians and the mother,” he said.

Amid outcry, Northam apologized and his office issued a clarifying statement saying that, “The governor’s comments were limited to the actions physicians would take in the event that a woman in those circumstances went into labor.”

Turning his attention to another prominent Democrat, Trump then shifted his attention to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, taking note of the size of the mask she wore to Biden’s first joint address to Congress and saying he had never seen anything so big worn as a protective face covering.

Discussing masks, Trump then took aim at Biden’s appearance wearing a mask at a virtual event with other world leaders.

“You couldn’t hear a word he said,” Trump claimed.

He then issued a warning, suggesting that Democrats being so aggressive on mask-wearing would hurt vaccine acceptance among hesitant Americans.

The former president also noted how Democrats stay united on issues, more so than Republicans.

He reportedly mentioned GOP lawmakers who requested his endorsement in elections and then undermined his policies once in office — calling out by name Sens. Mitt Romney (R-Ut.) and Ben Sasse (R-Neb.).
