Microsoft, American Airlines, other big US corporations question Texas bill on voting reform

Nearly 50 companies signed a letter opposing the Texas voting bill. A group of major U.S. companies have united to voice concerns about a measure in the Texas legislature that intends to strengthen voting laws, saying any such reform should not restrict voters access to balloting. Nearly 50 companies, including Microsoft, American Airlines and Patagonia have joined with other groups in signing the open letter, according to The Wall Street Journal. "We stand together, as a nonpartisan coalition, calling on elected leaders in Texas to support reforms that make democracy more accessible and oppose any changes that would restrict eligible voters' access to the ballot," reads the letter released Tuesday by the group Fair Elections Texas.

The Republican-led measure intends to further secure early-voting and absentee and mail-in balloting. Critics says the measure restrict voting. Texas GOP Gov. Gregg Abbott says it increases election security. The measure has passed in the Senate and a final House vote is expected on the bill by the end of the week. Other companies who signed the letter include the jeans and apparel company Levi Strauss, the foodservice industry, Sodexo, and craft supply marketplace Etsy.

Inspector general: EPA 'did not fully comply with federal laws' in handling CARES Act funding

"Our evaluation … determined that the Agency did not fully comply with federal laws," the OIG report says

A federal watchdog said Tuesday the Environmental Protection Agency failed to institute adequate risk-assessment procedures – and "did not fully comply with federal laws" – regarding appropriation funding in the recently enacted CARES Act. The agency's inspector general report states the shortcoming on the high-risk emergency supplemental appropriation created "a risk of fraud, waste, abuse." The 14-page report detailed, in one example, how the agency failed to properly distribute three supplemental funds for cleaning separate facilities. The report found that each facility had different needs, therefore the funds should have been divide among the facilities to maximize their use, avoiding potentially waste, fraud or abuse.

In March 2020, the agency received $7.23 million in supplemental funds to "prevent, prepare for and respond to coronavirus, domestically or internationally." The CARES Act was passed in March 2020 as a $2.2 trillion coronavirus relief stimulus bill, including unemployment compensations. The report also found that the agency did not properly disclose monthly expenditures of the funds as the CARES Act requires. All CARES Act funds expire in September, and the EPA has 39% of its fund unspent, leaving the agency with $2.81 million as of last month. The inspector general's office recommend the EPA document when the funds are received by agency divisions and how it will mitigate the risks of fund mismanagement and abuse.

Jenna Ellis launches election integrity watchdog group with Texas AG Paxton, Navarro, Kerik

"The Election Integrity Alliance will unite groups and efforts across the nation focused on combating election fraud and will build solutions and provide resources to state legislators and the public on challenges to free and fair elections," Jenna Ellis told Just the News. In the wake of the 2020 election contest which former President Trump contends was rife with fraud, the American Greatness Fund is launching the Election Integrity Alliance. "The Election Integrity Alliance will unite groups and efforts across the nation focused on combating election fraud and will build solutions and provide resources to state legislators and the public on challenges to free and fair elections," attorney and former counsel to President Trump Jenna Ellis told Just the News in a written statement. "The Election Integrity Alliance will be a centralized hub that gives tools to enact meaningful change for the American people," said Ellis, who hosts a podcast with Just the News.

Ellis is the chair of the Alliance's national board, while Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton and former Trump administration adviser Peter Navarro will both be honorary co-chairmen, according to a press release. Former New York police commissioner Bernie Kerik will be among the board's members. The newly announced effort comes in addition to other pushes for election integrity and as Trump maintains that the 2020 contest was tainted: "The Fraudulent Presidential Election of 2020 will be, from this day forth, known as THE BIG LIE!" Trump said in a statement on Monday.

Heritage Action for America earlier this year "launched its first-ever state advocacy campaign to secure and strengthen state election systems, with an initial investment of $10 million and a commitment to devote whatever funding it takes to accomplish its goals," according to a press release. The Amistad Project of the Thomas More Society has engaged in election integrity-related litigation. "Election integrity is a hallmark of freedom and should be a non-partisan, wholly American value," Ellis said. "The Election Integrity Alliance's mission is to support Congress, the state legislatures, and the voters and together, continue building a more perfect Union," she said.
