What you need to understand about putin is he is a spook. A hardcore one at that. Primarily he is an opportunist. He arose from the Soviet Union KGB. When it fell he took the opportunity to rise in power.
He has robbed his country of its wealth and has people murdered, so hes not a nice guy.

So enemy of enemy is a friend right? there may be room to work with putin and russia, like POTUS has said and has said to be skeptical. However working with putin and russia does not mean they become are allies. As much as I would love to see russia leave its communistic ways and become our ally that is a long long way off.
