Trump Triumphs, But Arpaio and Babeu Take Beatings
Stephen Lemons | November 9, 2016 | 11:08am
Maybe the president-elect has something for the biggest loser of the night, Sheriff Joe, who stumped for Trump early and often, hoping to ride his coattails to a seventh term in office.
Instead, Democrat Paul Penzone crushed Arpaio's hopes by more than 10 points and more than 114,000 votes so far.
Liberal billionaire George Soros dropped a few million simoleons on the race in order to topple Joe, and Latino groups organized mightily against him, as they have in the past. More than one poll showed Arpaio way down.
But we're talking about Joe Arpaio here. Prior to this morning, he bestrode the Republican political world like a colossus, raising megamillions via a rabid fan base of small donors nationwide. What finally undid him — more than Soros, more than Penzone, a worthy opponent who put everything on the line for a second time to battle the GOP behemoth — was Arpaio's own arrogance: his contempt toward the federal court in the racial profiling case Melendres v. Arpaio and the civil and criminal charges that followed, not to mention the still-inflating cost of the case, for which the county has paid more than $50 million to date, all of it from the general fund or from Arpaio's budget.
Because the plaintiffs in Melendres sought remedies, not damages, this disaster isn't covered by the county's self-insurance policy. The money comes directly from taxpayers' pockets (including a property-tax increase). Yet, Arpaio was unrepentant and continued his defiance of the court. When the Maricopa County Board of Supervisors rejected his recent bid to hire a law firm to try to boot Judge G. Murray Snow from the case, Arpaio ignored them, taking $1 million from his budget to pay for the longshot legal maneuver.
Such antics further alienated Republicans who otherwise would have supported him. Also, East Valley Mormons were angered by what they saw as Arpaio's vendettas against LDS politicians like U.S. Senator Jeff Flake and former county supervisor Don Stapley (not to mention Snow, also a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints).
But bear in mind that because of the registration advantage Republicans hold in Maricopa County, Arpaio could only lose if Penzone offered a sufficiently palatable alternative, thereby peeling off a hunk of Republican votes.

The Soros contribution is in 2016
not sure if Soros also contributed in 2020. Don't see his name in this article.

Penzone’s re-election campaign has yet to receive a Soros-sized donation — from the hedge fund mogul or anyone else — but it has gotten help from a cast of other prominent characters.
For this series, Phoenix New Times mined roughly 3,000 individual contributions and hundreds of pages of 2019 campaign filings, reviewing the names, addresses, and donation amounts for all contributors who gave the candidates more than $50 in 2019. The New Times analysis revealed that politicians, CEOs, attorneys, investors, and board members of some of Arizona’s biggest companies have all sought to underwrite Penzone’s 2020 campaign.
The incumbent candidate has also received more high-dollar donations than his opponents. According to recent campaign filings, more than 100 donors gave Penzone over $1,000 and nine donors gave him $6,450, the most an individual can give in an election cycle.
Though Arpaio has amassed more total cash than Penzone — Arpaio has collected $480,000 in campaign donations compared to Penzone's $380,000 — Arpaio has received just 25 contributions over $1,000, and none at the contribution limit.
“It sounds like the establishment is getting behind Penzone,” said Mike O’Neil, a longtime Arizona political pollster who has followed Arpaio’s career.
Penzone’s donors have emerged from all sides of the political spectrum, from sports to public utilities, the food industry and law. Several names on his donor rolls are instantly recognizable — for example, Valley restaurateur Sam Fox and his wife, Emily, each donated $6,450. So did investor Michael Watts and his wife, Cynthia, whose $30 million check to Arizona State University in 2018 led to the renaming of the university’s College of Public Service. And Nicole and Timothy Bidwill — both children of late Arizona Cardinals owner Bill Bidwill who still work with the team — donated $1,000 and $500, respectively.
Other donations came from Valley residents who don’t, perhaps, have immediate name recognition but are flush with capital or hold prominent careers. Take Jacquelynn Dorrance, the wife of billionaire Bennett Dorrance, whose grandfather invented condensed soup and later became president of the Campbell Soup Company. Jacquelynn Dorrance gave $1,000 to Penzone’s campaign in October, records show. Meanwhile, Ann Birmingham-Scheel, a former U.S. Attorney in Phoenix who is now chief of administration at the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office, donated $3,000 to keep her colleague in office.
There’s also Arizona’s former Senator Jeff Flake, a Republican who signed a $100 check to Penzone’s campaign in September of last year.
“I think you’ve got to put county over party here, same way you’ve got to put country over party,” Flake told New Times. “I thought this was a way to demonstrate that.”
While individuals can give no more than $6,450 to a candidate during an election cycle in Maricopa County, PACs have no restrictions.
That’s how George Soros gave so much to Penzone in 2016 —he donated through a PAC called Maricopa Strong(as did Michael Watts).
It's also how at least one new special interest fund hopes to funnel money into Penzone’s campaign this time around. A newly formed PAC, Citizens for Principled Law Enforcement, aims to raise money to keep Penzone in office, according to spokesman Joe Wolf.
Wolf, also a senior adviser to Michael Bloomberg's presidential campaign, said he can't comment further about the new PAC's activity.

LET Exclusive – Is Maricopa County Controlled by George Soros?

George Soros contributed at least $2 million to the campaign of Paul Penzone when he challenged Sheriff Joe Arpaio two years ago.
Maricopa County and the Phoenix metroplex are large areas… but this was still an election for a county sheriff. You have to wonder why the notorious billionaire would invest so much in Penzone’s campaign. But to answer that question, you only need look as far as Penzone’s Chief of Staff and Special Counsel, Stephanie Fleischman Cherny.
Former and current members of the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Department have strongly indicated the reasons for this outside intervention, and laid out a trail of bread crumbs that led to Penzone becoming sheriff, changing nearly every policy in the department to align with the ACLU’s narrative and agenda andplacing deputies in the dangerous and conflictual position of declaring their steadfast loyalty to Penzone or face significant repercussions–- made-up internal affairs investigations, secret meetings, and direct action– to prevent deputies from laterally moving to other departments or police forces.
I’ve had an eye-opening series of discussions with current and former Maricopa County deputies. These deputies have solidly risked speaking out for fear of termination or other form of reprisal.
Some points made by deputies that most in law enforcement would say should not be happening:
Deputies are “invited” to off-campus meetings by members of the internal affairs division for “interviews.”These interviews are conducted away from the office for the reason of being clandestine in nature, and deputies are forced to declare allegiance to Paul Penzone. If they waiver in the slightest, like mentioning they spend off-duty time with members loyal to Joe Arpaio, they are immediately put on the “blue team.” An internal affairs investigation is started, whether justified or not, and that directly prevents a member from transferring to another sheriff’s department, police department, or even Federal organizations like DHS or TSA. It’s common knowledge that no police chief, sheriff, or other manager would consider hiring an officer who is under IA investigation.
Deputies were formerly trained on use of force, 4thAmendment issues and requirements, and community/police relations through an in-house program. That program has now been aligned under the control of Stephanie Fleischman Cherny, who has direct ties to Soros, the ACLU, and La Raza. Deputies have indicated that previously, they would receive good training on use of force and search and seizure rules, but now, they are forced to endure an assault on their very being – they are accused of being racists, taking advantage of “white privilege,” taking advantage of “police privilege,” and other insulting messages – deputies consistently related that they were demeaned and made to feel like the lowest form of people on the Earth. Instead of receiving good technical training that helps them do their jobs better and protect the citizens of Maricopa County.
The sheriff’s posse, right at 2,000 members strong, is an all-volunteer group of deputies and concerned civilians who support the department during special events, natural disasters, and other times where additional department manning is needed. Many of these members have completed six to eight weeks of additional training (on their own time) in order to hold positions within the posse. The deputies feel that the posse is an invaluable source of support and assistance for the department, but Penzone is in the process of dismantling the group – his methods and means center around a liberal narrative that the posse is used to round up illegals, and of course, the ACLU and George Soros can’t support that agenda, as false as it may be. Further measures to eliminate the posse are evident in the (again) placing of deputies into IA investigations and making them ineligible to serve on the volunteer force.
Let’s get back to Stephanie Fleischman Cherny. She was instrumental in the support of La Raza’s lawsuit and attack on then-Governor Jan Brewer and then-Sheriff Joe Arpaio in a case filed with the 9thCircuit Court. This reeks of conflict as she was lead counsel on the suit (see below), but then assisted in Penzone’s election and ultimate defeat of Joe Arpaio – when articles about Arpaio were used as a basis for the suit. She now enjoys a position on Penzone’s staffas his chief of staff and special counsel. When you put the pieces of the puzzle together or follow the trail of breadcrumbs, it’s easy to see how George Soros directly controls the daily operations of the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Department, andhow Paul Penzone is his puppet.
Wonder if he's still beating his exwife

A Glendale sergeant sent two officers, informing them that the call was from a Phoenix police sergeant. After talking to Penzone, the cops contacted Susan, whose account of the event was "consistent" with her estranged husband's, "up to the point where she had re-entered the residence to retrieve the hockey equipment."
As she went back for the hockey sticks, the police report says Susan Penzone stated: "Paul allegedly pushed her causing her to strike her forehead on the doorway."
When she came back with the sticks, she "pushed" the hockey sticks toward Paul and "may have inadvertently struck him," she told the cops.
Yet Susan Penzone did not contact the police.
The report noted injuries to both parties, a "minor contusion" to Susan's forehead and the same to Paul's right cheek.
Both were given victim's rights pamphlets for what the report characterizes as "assault/domestic violence." And both told the officer that they desired prosecution. The Glendale city prosecutor's office declined to pursue charges because of "no reasonable likelihood of conviction."
Neither Penzone nor his estranged wife was arrested, though Arizona does have a mandatory arrest law in regard to suspects of domestic abuse when injuries are present.

Penzone's current address is in Scottsdale, where he lives with his wife of seven years, Veronica. The Scottsdale Police Department says there is only one file related to Penzone in its system, when he was the victim of a burglary in 2009.
Penzone says he always has been open about the incident and even has talked about it when lecturing on domestic-violence issues as a police officer.
"We see situations where women are harmed, and that is unacceptable and unforgivable," he explains. "And there are situations where, unfortunately, women act out against men, which is a far much smaller number. At the end of the day, domestic violence is a very serious issue."
