I was in Army Basic training at the time. We didn't get much access to the news. The drill sergeants kept telling us that we were going to get sent to Iran because of the Iran hostage situation that Jimmy Carter couldn't deal with. We did hear that Mt. St. Helen had exploded but only because one of the GIs was from Washington State. Guess I must have missed the chopped up baby news.
