Jeff Bezos Is Building a 10,000-Year Clock Inside a Mountain
Engineers and contractors are building a massive, multi-room clock inside a mountain in West Texas—a clock that will tell time for the next 10,000 years. And despite an informal website with a whiff of Blogspot template, this is a Jeff Bezos project.
There are a lot of surprises in the story of the Clock of the Long Now. It’s the brainchild of Danny Hillis, a computer scientist and entrepreneur who first imagined the 10,000-year clock in 1986. Now, he’s a visiting professor at MIT Media Lab with a reputation for building supercomputers, autonomous dinosaur robots, and Disney theme park rides. He’s exactly the kind of guy who decides he wants to build a huge eon clock in a mountain.
How does the clock work? Well, the longness of the time involved is the big engineering challenge. The clock is designed to tick just once a year and chime once per millennium. Experts are blasting rooms out of the interior of the mountain in order to install steampunky piles of gears and flywheels. According to Bezos, the Amazon founder and richest man on the planet, the clock will be 500 feet tall, "all mechanical, powered by day/night thermal cycles," and "synchronized at solar noon."

Mercy release' leads to ill fate for Hong Kong turtles
In Hong Kong, thousands of marine animals are freed every May in the lead up to Buddha’s birthday.
The practice, known as “mercy release”, is believed to bring good fortune to people.
However, the good intentions of the superstitious can often result in more harm to the animals, than good.
Many of them are intentionally captured and sold just to be set free.
They can get hurt and be left stranded in murky waterways where they normally don't belong.
Sean Lai is the founder of Hong Kong Abandoned Tortoise Concern Group.
He warns that releasing turtles in catchwater drains or ponds can kill them.
“If they used to be cared for by humans, they won't be able to hunt in the wild, they may not be able to catch the fish, shrimp, or food they need, then they'll starve to death. Or due to the change of weather, they might freeze to death or die from the heat.”
Lai and his group of volunteers snorkeled through muddy waters to save dozens of turtles left there by residents.
They are now nursing more than 60 injured turtles in their homes.
They also bury the dead turtles that did not survive long enough to be rescued.
While mercy release is not illegal in the city, authorities say the practice can spread diseases and poses a risk to ecosystems.
Paul Crow is a senior conservationist at Kadoorie Farm and Botanic Garden.
“One, it's just directly, ecosystems that are receiving non-native animals can be changed by the arrival of those animals if they manage to survive…Potential disease, bacteria, virus, parasites from other countries, from the collection sources are all getting dumped without screening, or without sort of consideration of the public health risk as well."
Other animals commonly involved in mercy releases in Hong Kong include frogs, insects, baby birds and fish.
The Hong Kong Buddhist Association slams the practice as “inappropriate”, and recommends alternatives like adopting a vegetarian lifestyle.

The collaboration follows the January 2010 call by Bill and Melinda Gates for the next ten years to be the Decade of Vaccines.The Global Vaccine Action Plan will enable greater coordination across all stakeholder groups – national governments, multilateral organizations, civil society, the private sector and philanthropic organizations – and will identify critical policy, resource, and other gaps that must be addressed to realize the life-saving potential of vaccines.
The structure of the Decade of Vaccines Collaboration includes a Leadership Council to provide oversight for the planning effort, a Steering Committee that holds the primary responsibility for developing the action plan, an International Advisory Committee to assist the Leadership Council in evaluating the action plan, and a Secretariat for administrative support.
Prof. Pedro Alonso, Director for the Institute for Global Health of Barcelona and Dr. Christopher Elias, President and CEO of PATH, have been appointed co-chairs of the Steering Committee and the Secretariat.
“Vaccines are miracles,” said Prof. Alonso, “For just a few dollars per child, vaccines prevent disease and disability for a lifetime. We must make sure that people understand that vaccines are one of the best investments in health.”
