For anons who aren't familiar with Memphis, it's a huge distribution center, being so centrally located with the River running N/S and I-40 E/W. Barges must be able to pass to get to Port of New Orleans. Truck traffic must be able to flow. There are actually very, very few ways across the River that divides our country. This bridge situation is a very big, huge deal. The top of the crack looks awfully straight. But they say metal fatigue. If it's fatigue, what does that say about the rest of the span. It's really a bad situation. Disrupt the supply chain…SMH

Right. The bridge that remains is much older, but probably, hopefully better built. The closest alternatives are Helena, AR (which is not off an expressway), and Carruthersville, MO, which sort of is, but both are hours out of the way.
