Live: Israeli troops mass near Gaza border as tensions escalate

NEAR GAZA BORDER - Israel prepares combat troops and is in "various stages of preparing ground operations", a military spokesman has said, a move that would recall similar incursions during Israel-Gaza wars in 2014 and 2008-2009.

Hamas fired dozens of rockets towards Tel Aviv late on Tuesday in response to an Israeli air strike that had flattened a tower block in the Strip.

Israel has launched air strikes against militant targets in the Gaza Strip, after rockets were fired from the territory towards Jerusalem.

The Hamas-run Palestinian health ministry in Gaza said 20 people, including children, had died in the strikes.

In Jerusalem, the rocket fire caused Israel's parliament to be evacuated as sirens sounded.

Moar drama from Boris…

Live: Boris Johnson on fears Indian Covid-19 rapidly spreading across UK

BORIS Johnson has vowed to take "whatever action" is necessary either "regionally or nationally" to squash the Indian Covid variant.

The PM is expected to talk about our roadmap to freedom, and whether there are any potential pitfalls in light of the Indian coronavirus strain hitting some areas.

He will be joined at the podium by chief medical officer Professor Chris Whitty and chief scientific adviser Sir Patrick Vallance.

Yesterday, the PM admitted to being "anxious" about the mutation and said new measures might be needed in hotspots where it has emerged.

And he refused to rule out the possibility that the final stage of the roadmap on June 21 may have to be delayed.

But scientists have said they're confident the current crop of vaccines is effective against the variant.

Britain's long-awaited 'Freedom Day' is now in serious doubt, with scientists and Boris Johnson's former adviser Dominic Cummings among those calling for it to be postponed.

Epidemiologist Professor Paul Hunter said Brits now face a nail-biting wait for data on exactly how serious the current outbreaks are and how many people end up dead or in hospital.
