Sexual Abuse Scandal Rocks World Health Organization

Donors to the World Health Organization (W.H.O.) and diplomats from member nations are voicing “serious concerns” about sexual abuse allegations emanating from W.H.O.’s mission to fight the 2018-2019 Ebola epidemic in the Congo, the Associated Press reported Friday.

The AP reported Wednesday that senior W.H.O. officials were lying when they denied knowledge of the Congo allegations, which included local aides complaining they were pressured into sex by at least two W.H.O. doctors.

According to the complaints, one of the doctors made employment with the W.H.O. mission conditional on sexual favors – a difficult demand for impoverished residents of the Congo region to refuse – while another got a local girl pregnant and paid her to keep quiet. The AP obtained a notarized contract that revealed a W.H.O. staffer and manager signed as witnesses to the hush deal to “protect the integrity and reputation” of their organization.

The W.H.O. doctors in question, Boubacar Diallo and Jean-Paul Ngandu, denied any wrongdoing, but the AP conducted an extensive investigation including dozens of interviews, emails, legal documents, and recorded meetings that showed W.H.O. senior management disregarded the complaints about both men. The woman who accused Diallo of demanding sex in exchange for employment said he “often bragged about his connections to W.H.O. Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.”

“Eight top officials privately acknowledged that WHO had failed to effectively tackle sexual exploitation during the Ebola outbreak and that the problem was systemic, recordings of internal meetings show,” the investigative report stated.

“Over 2018 and 2019, three Ebola experts, including two who worked for W.H.O. at the time, told the AP they raised concerns about sex abuse in general, and Diallo in particular, with senior managers. But they said they were told that controlling the Ebola outbreak was more important, and two said Diallo was considered ‘untouchable’ because of his relationship with Tedros,” the report added.

The AP faulted W.H.O. for running a perfunctory investigation of the abuse claims, failing to observe its own protocols for handling abuse charges, instructing whistleblowers to keep quiet, and failing to interview any of the accusers. Some of the W.H.O. officials who talked with AP reporters seemed well aware the organization has pervasive problems with sexual abuse, and were unsurprised the Congo allegations went nowhere:

“All of us may have been suspecting for as long as the Ebola response was taking (place) that something like this would be possible,” said Andreas Mlitzke, director of WHO’s office of compliance, risk management and ethics, during an internal meeting in November. Mlitzke likened WHO officials in Congo to “an invading force” and said, “Things like this have historically happened in wartime.”

Mlitzke said during the meeting that WHO typically “takes the passive approach” in its investigations, and that it couldn’t be expected to uncover wrongdoing among staffers.

“What prevents us from doing something proactive is our own psychology,” he said.

The AP’s follow-up report on Friday found diplomats and W.H.O. donors in the United States, U.K., and Europe expressing grave concerns about the Congo allegations, notably including the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, the third-largest funder for the World Health Organization.

“Our role as a funder is to hold organizations that receive grants from the foundation to the highest standards of transparency and accountability, and to insist that they take steps to prevent misconduct in the future,” the Foundation stated.

IRS Launches Crackdown To Ensure Crypto Investors Pay Their Taxes

Yesterday's news that the DoJ and IRS are digging into Binance amid whispers about allegations of tax fraud, manipulation and AML violations was just the latest indication from the government that it is taking enforcement of securities taxes tied to crypto wealth very seriously. In case that wasn't already clear, WSJ published a story in its "Tax Report" section (with the federal tax deadline just days away at May 17) reminding readers that the IRS under President Joe Biden is coming for your crypto wealth - and those that don't cough it up might be subject to harsh penalties, both financial and criminal.

It starts by reminding readers that two new IRS investigations to catch crypto tax cheats targeting various exchanges have been launched in recent months. In April, a judge in Boston approved an IRS summons to the payments company Circle and its affiliates, including the crypto exchange Poloniex. In May, a judge in San Francisco approved a similar summons for records from Kraken, another exchange based in California. Both summonses apply to customers who have traded more than $20K in crypto in any single year between 2016 and 2020.

"With these summonses and other actions, the IRS is mounting a full-court press to show taxpayers how seriously it takes cryptocurrency compliance," says Don Fort, a former chief of IRS criminal investigation now with Kostelanetz & Fink. "Taxpayers should take it seriously too."

Crypto exchanges don't report client information to the IRS like discount digital brokerages do, so there's temptation for traders to try and skate by. But if this approach worked in the past, be warned: that could change this year now that the Dems are back in power.

Binance doesn't even allow American customers to trade on its platform (though it has been accused of illegally doing so by turning a blind eye to users trying to skirt this rule), but other investigations and summonses of note go back even further. In 2016, the IRS received approval for a similar summons for Coinbase and obtained information for about 13K customers. The agency sent letters urging many of them to make sure their crypto taxes were paid, as the IRS might soon be taking a hard look.

Admissions from the IRS in court filings suggest this tactic has been working for the agency. In one filing to justify its summonses, the the agency said it had received more than 1,000 amended tax returns and collected $13 million from crypto holders with more than $20,000 of transactions, plus another $12 million from other crypto notices, and audits are ongoing.

Remember, those who are caught skirting taxes often are forced to enter the IRS's Voluntary Disclosure program for taxpayers with criminal liability, a program that usually lets participants out of prosecution but imposes large penalties.

Russian Forces Dispatched To Armenia’s Border Following Breach By Azerbaijani Special Forces

Armenia has requested military support from Russia following a border breach by Azerbaijan troops, Reuters and several other sources reported on May 14.

Earlier this week, hundreds of Azerbaijan special forces personnel entered Armenia territory in the eastern province of Gegharkunik and the southern province of Syunik. No clashes were reported. Yet, the “encroachment” led to serious tensions between the two countries.

Azerbaijan accepted to withdraw its troops under an initial agreement with Armenia. However, the agreement was not implemented in full. In response, Armenian caretaker Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan opted to request assassinate from Russia.

“Yesterday an agreement was reached that today Azerbaijan’s armed forces should leave Armenian territory,” Interfax news agency quoted Pashinyan as saying at a meeting about the border. “This agreement has been partially fulfilled; there are territories that the Azerbaijanis did indeed leave. But, since the agreement was not fulfilled completely, today I have approached the president of Russia…for military assistance.”

Following Pashinyan’s request, Russian troops from the 102nd Base in Armenia were dispatched to Syunik in order to enforce the agreement.

The border incident is the first major escalation between the two countries since last year, when Azerbaijan carried out a large offensive on Armenian forces in the disputed region of Nagorno-Karabakh. The battle ended on November 10 with a Russian-brokered ceasefire.

Ever since the battle in Nagorno-Karabakh, the situation on Azerbaijani-Iranian has been unstable. On March 15, two Azerbaijani border guards were killed by Iranian drug smugglers near the border line.

Israel Punishes Media For Reporting Its Escalation In Palestine

Today is Nakba day which commemorates the violent expulsion of more than 700,000 Palestinians from their homes which began 74 years ago and is still continuing.

Just yesterday Fares Akram. Associated Press reporter in Gaza, wrote in a diary about his families expulsion and his life under colonist bombing:

GAZA CITY, Gaza Strip (AP) — On Friday morning, a military airstrike smashed my family’s farm in the northern Gaza Strip into a jagged mass of metal and splintered trees. An Israeli bomb had slammed into the yard, carving a crater into the dirt and leaving rubble in its wake.

The conflict, once again, hit home.

The first Gaza war taught me that while our lush citrus grove might offer some breathing space from the congestion and difficulties of city life, it’s no refuge. A previous Israeli airstrike killed my father, Akram al-Ghoul, on January 3, 2009. As fighting raged, he’d insisted on sleeping at the farm to tend to the cattle and chicken, and to nurture the trees.

In all, six of my relatives, three close friends and several colleagues have died in the three bloody wars and countless battles between Israel and Hamas. Each time the violence erupts and I report as a journalist on the people who lost their homes, their children or their lives, the memories creep back. I always think, “That could be me.” When the thundering bombs, buzzing drones and pounding artillery refresh the pain and trigger the old fear, I seek refuge in work.

The Associated Press office is the only place in Gaza City I feel somewhat safe. The Israeli military has the coordinates of the high-rise, so it’s less likely a bomb will bring it crashing down.

Today Fares Akram and Joseph Krauss report:

GAZA CITY, Gaza Strip (AP) — An Israeli airstrike destroyed a high-rise building in Gaza City that housed offices of The Associated Press and other media outlets hours after another Israeli air raid on a densely populated refugee camp killed at least 10 Palestinians from an extended family, mostly children, on Saturday.

The strike on the high-rise came nearly an hour after the military ordered people to evacuate the 12-story building, which also housed Al-Jazeera, other offices and residential apartments. The strike brought down the entire structure, which collapsed in a gigantic cloud of dust. There was no immediate explanation for why it was attacked.

This was the second high rise housing media studios, offices, telecommunication equipment as well as residential apartments that Israel destroyed in its current attack.

Earlier today AP had accused the Israeli military of intentionally misinforming the media to trick the resistance in Gaza. (The trick did not work.)

In a statement AP's president condemned today's strike and wrote:

The world will know less about what is happening in Gaza because of what happened today.

Well, yes. The Israeli military will congratulate itself for achieving that aim.

Denying Reality Leads to Tyranny and Societal Failure

The common thread that connects failed societies, from Weimar Germany to the Soviet Union, is an almost pathological insistence on denying reality. Weimar Germany denied that masses of printed money would destroy civilized society. The Soviet Union insisted that Soviet Man would emerge spontaneously from the ashes of capitalist society. Weimar Germany spawned Nazi Germany. Nazi Germany was completely destroyed, both physically and politically, by the World War II Allies. Mercifully, the Soviet Union simply collapsed after seventy years of consuming capital to achieve the phantom of the classless society. Today both Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union are synonymous with tyranny and failure. Both nations murdered millions. Both nations no longer exist. True, Germany exists as does Russia, but I contend that both are new nations. Neither is perfect, but neither claims a political heritage to the nation that preceded it.

Pathological policy errors flowed inexorably from a skewed view of reality in both Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union. Once this view of reality was deemed to be above criticism, its champions adopted increasingly tyrannical policies. Nazi Germany's Aryan Supremacy racial theories seemingly justified the murder of the handicapped, Gypsies, those of alternative sexual orientation, Jews, and Slavs. In the name of birthing a new Soviet Man, the Soviet Union murdered anyone who stood in the way of its program to confiscate all businesses, including small farms. When businesses and farms failed, there was no soul searching as to root causes that might lie in Marxism itself. No, the problem had to be saboteurs within society. Reality, you see, was what the Soviet Union's Politburo said it was. As the vanguard of the proletariat, the Politburo stood outside society and saw its flaws. Those who disagreed were blind to this insight and had to be eliminated.

Chasing the Phantoms of Alternative Reality

Today the West especially is adopting policies that flow from alternative realities that, frankly, do not exist. Here I list just a few:

Catastrophic global warming/climate change is caused by man and must be stopped. I prefer to qualify the term "global warming/climate change" by the adjective "catastrophic". Is the world warming? Who knows? Is the climate changing? Probably. But neither global warming nor climate change is "catastrophic". Yet it has become almost an article of faith that the earth is on the precipice of an environmental catastrophe, requiring ever more radical handicaps on our freedoms and the economy.

American Airlines investigating pilot who criticized school district's 'diversity and inclusion' plan

American Airlines confirmed Wednesday the company is investigating a Texas pilot who criticized an education plan that introduces critical race theory into his local school district.

After a video went viral three years ago showing teenage students using the N-word at a party in Southlake, Texas, the Carroll Independent School District created the "Cultural Competence Action Plan."

The plan, critics say, introduces elements of critical race theory into public schools.

Southlake Families PAC, which opposes the CCAP, explains the "diversity and inclusion" education plan makes "social justice training" mandatory for all Carroll ISD students and would even "establish a Diversity and Inclusion Week at each CISD campus during the academic year much like the weeks dedicated to 'BLM at School' in Seattle, New York and Philadelphia. The BLM at School program on the BLM website includes a starter kit, list of Demands, 13 Guiding Principles and Curriculum. Included in this kit is a queer and trans-affirming curriculum for all ages and grades, as well as curriculum specifically stated to "disrupt the Western-prescribed nuclear family structure."

What are the details?

Guy Midkiff is a Texas-based pilot who has flown for American Airlines for more than 30 years, according to the Dallas Morning News.

But his employment with the airline may now be in jeopardy after social media users complained that Midkiff was voicing opposition to the controversial cultural awareness plan.

The Morning News reported that Midkiff used social media and a podcast to "documented his opposition" to the CCAP and its supporters. However, activists who support the CCAP claimed Midkiff was harassing people online and repeatedly sought American Airlines' attention over what they thought was problematic conduct.

Southlake Anti-Racism Coalition claimed Midkiff was "harassing" people online, but cited only "unprofessional comments" that voiced opposition to the CCAP.

"Your employee has been harassing students and community members relentlessly for months for speaking out against the racism they experience in our town. From targeting individual minors and accosting our organization, here are just some of his most recent unprofessional comments," the SARC said.

Another Twitter account said, "Hey @AmericanAir, why is this man saying he is a pilot for your airline? He is consistently harassing minority females in Southlake and now is going after our students! SARC stands for the Southlake Anti-Racism coalition and is made up mostly of students. Kids!"

On Twitter, American Airlines' official account responded, "Your comments concern us so please DM the link where it shows the employee comments for us to take a closer look."

What did American Airlines say?

The company said in a statement they are investigating the pilot.

"We are troubled by the allegations made and have launched an investigation into the matter," an American Airlines representative told the Dallas Morning News.
