The deleted database files noted by the Arizona Senate in their letter to Maricopa County’s Board of Supervisors may have been recovered by the audit team.

This past week we reported the bombshell that there were files that were erased from the machines requested to audit in Maricopa County only days before providing the machines to the Senate’s auditors.

The image is of all the files that have been UNDELETED. That shows it was recovered by the forensic IT teams. It’s not to show us that they were deleted it is to show that they HAVE IT ALL.

According to the Daily Beast – As of Wednesday afternoon, when users click on pages for the “Lindell Management” Vimeo account, a “Sorry, we couldn’t find that page” message appears for where MyPillow and Lindell content was once hosted.

“This is worse than what Twitter did to me and my company!” Lindell said in a brief phone interview on Wednesday. “This affects my business, the Lindell Recovery Network, and the entrepreneurs who I work with.” Lindell also sent The Daily Beast a screenshot of what he said was an email he and his team received from Vimeo on Wednesday at 12:36 p.m. ET, and it reads, “Your account was terminated for violating Vimeo’s Terms of Service…and Community Guidelines. We do not allow accounts that upload content created by or mainly featuring a banned user. As the purpose of your account is to promote content from a banned user, it has been removed. We wish you the best of luck in finding a hosting platform better suited to your needs.”

Israel Airstrikes Flatten 3 Gaza Buildings, Kill 42 As Netanyahu Says "War Will Go On"

The fourth war between Israel and Palestine escalated on Sunday when Israeli airstrikes on Gaza City flattened three buildings and killed at least 42 people, Palestinian medics said. Yet despite international efforts to broker a cease-fire and the rising death toll (mostly on the Palestinian side) Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu signaled the fourth war with Gaza’s Hamas rulers - which was sparked by unrest in Israeli-annexed east Jerusalem, and has seen the death toll in the densely-populated Gaza Strip rise to 181, and to 10 in Israel - would rage on.

Speaking in a televised address, Netanyahu said on Sunday evening that the attacks were continuing at "full-force" and will "take time." Israel "wants to levy a heavy price" from the Hamas militant group, he said, flanked by his defense minister and political rival, Benny Gantz, in a show of unity even as a growing chorus of skeptics is asking if Netanyahu is just killing innocent people as a diversion from his own political scandals and as a means to stay in power.

Sunday's airstrikes hit a major downtown street of residential buildings and storefronts over the course of five minutes after midnight, destroying two adjacent buildings and one about 50 yards (meters) down the road. According to AP, whose HQ in Gaza was flattened following an Israeli attack on Saturday, the Israeli air assault early Sunday was the deadliest single attack since heavy fighting broke out between Israel and Hamas nearly a week ago, marking the worst fighting here since their devastating 2014 war in Gaza.

The Gaza Health Ministry said 16 women and 10 children were among those killed, with more than 50 people wounded, and rescue efforts are still underway. Earlier, the Israeli military said it destroyed the home of Gaza’s top Hamas leader, Yahiyeh Sinwar, in a separate strike in the southern town of Khan Younis. It was the third such attack in the last two days on the homes of senior Hamas leaders, who have gone underground. The military also said Sunday it also struck the home of Sinwar's brother Muhammad, another senior Hamas member. On Saturday it destroyed the home of Khalil al-Hayeh, a senior figure in Hamas’ political branch. However, since Hamas’ leaders have gone into hiding in Gaza in response to the strikes, it is unlikely any were at home at the time of the strikes. Hamas’ top leader, Ismail Haniyeh, divides his time between Turkey and Qatar, both of which provide political support to the group.

AT&T In 'Advanced' Talks To Combine HBO, CNN, Discovery And Other Media Assets

AT&T is currently in 'advanced' discussions to combine several media assets into a giant portfolio, which would include beleaguered CNN and Discovery, according to the Wall Street Journal, citing people familiar with the matter. The move would mark a major shift in strategy for the telecom giant.

Also included would be several components of the company's WarnerMedia division, including the TBS, TNT and HGTV cable channels, and other names in their media portfolio such as HBO, and would constitute one of Hollywood's most valuable catalogues.

As noted, the deal is said to be in 'advanced' talks, with an agreement potentially coming as soon as Monday, according to the report. Others have cautioned that this isn't a done deal, and talks could still fall apart. Should it proceed, AT&T shareholders would own a large stake in the new entity.

A deal between WarnerMedia and Discovery, whose portfolio includes its namesake network and HGTV, would further consolidate a media business buffeted by cord-cutting and competition from streaming video.

The talks signal a major pullback by AT&T, which placed a massive bet on media with its 2018 acquisition of Time Warner Inc. for around $81 billion. That deal made it the world’s most indebted nonfinancial company. -WSJ

The negotiations were first noted by Bloomberg, which reported that AT&T was looking to combine media assets with Discovery.

As the Financial Times reports, AT&T's board of directors met Sunday to approve the deal, which is expected to be announced in the coming days.

The combination would merge one of Hollywood’s most valuable catalogues — spanning the Warner Bros film and television studios, the HBO network and a portfolio of cable channels including CNN — with Discovery, which has had success with a new streaming service aimed at unscripted cooking and home renovation shows.

After years of watching Netflix dominate the streaming landscape, the world’s largest media and tech companies have sought to fight back with their own services. In the past year and a half, Disney, Apple, WarnerMedia, Comcast, Discovery and others have launched streaming platforms as they battle for a piece of the future of entertainment.

The structure of the deal remains unclear but AT&T, which has a market value of about $230bn, is expected to control most of the combined entity. Discovery has a market value of $24bn.

The deal comes five years after AT&T agreed to buy TimeWarner for $85.4 billion in a bid to become the world's largest vertically integrated content and distribution company.

Two years ago, AT&T CEO John Stankey and Discovery head David Zaslav discussed combining their programming into an $8/month streaming service which would exclude HBO, however Disney's announcement that it would drop its Star Wars, Pixar, Marvel and Disney Classics catalogue into a $7/month streaming service caused Stankey and Zaslav to scrap the plan. Instead, Stankey created HBO Max, combining HBO with the rest of WarnerMedia's programming.

An interesting thing happened in late March as news spread that Bill Hwang's Archegos family office was liquidating after being hit with the biggest margin call since Lehman: George Soros, or rather his investment firm Soros Fund Management, was loading up on all the shares that Hwang was forced to liquidating.

According to the latest 13F filed by the family office shows that Soros bought some $375 Million of the most prominent Archegos holdings just as they were being forcibly liquidated by the likes of Hwang's Prime Brokers including Morgan Stanley and Goldman Sachs. These were Soros' holdings as of March 31, or just day after the Archegos liquidation began in earnest:

Liz Cheney Lied About Her Role in Spreading the Discredited CIA "Russian Bounty" Story

As part of her ideological war to reclaim the GOP for neocons, the now-deposed House leader falsely denied her role in a tale designed to block withdrawal from Afghanistan.

In an interview on Tuesday with Fox News’ Bret Baier, Rep. Liz Cheney (R-WY) denied that she spread the discredited CIA "Russian bounty” story. That CIA tale, claiming Russia was paying Taliban fighters to kill U.S. troops in Afghanistan, was cooked up by the CIA and then published by The New York Times on June 27 of last year, right as former President Trump announced his plans to withdraw troops from Afghanistan. The Times story, citing anonymous intelligence officials, was then continually invoked by pro-war Republicans and Democrats — led by Cheney — to justify their blocking of that troop withdrawal. The story was discredited when the U.S. intelligence community admitted last month that it had only “low to moderate confidence” that any of this even happened.

When Baier asked Cheney about her role in spreading this debunked CIA story, Cheney blatantly lied to him, claiming “if you go back and look at what I said — every single thing I said: I said if those stories are true, we need to know why the President and Vice President were not briefed on them.” After Baier pressed her on the fact that she vested this story with credibility, Cheney insisted a second time that she never endorsed the claim but merely spoke conditionally, always using the “if these reports are true” formulation. Hazmat team responds to hydrochloric acid leak after 50-car train derails in Albert Lea, Minnesota

A Union Pacific cargo train carrying mixed commodities has derailed in Minnesota, leaving dozens of cars piled up on top of one another – some leaking hydrochloric acid – with a hazardous materials team responding to the incident.

The train derailed about 1:30pm Saturday near Goose Lake in Albert Lea, Minnesota, located 100 miles south of the Twin Cities. At least 28 cars went off the track, according to a Union Pacific spokesperson, who confirmed two of them were leaking hydrochloric acid.

Local news station WCCO shared aerial footage of the pileup, in which multiple tank, box, and flat cars could be seen lying overturned by the lakeside.

Union Pacific said they were “working with emergency responders to determine a response plan,” according to WCCO reporter Nick Streiff, but the scale of the leak was unclear.

Hydrochloric acid is a strong corrosive substance used as a laboratory reagent. The short-term effects of inhalation can include irritation to the nose, eyes, and respiratory tract.

UK Health Secretary says Indian variant of Covid-19 could ‘spread like wildfire among the unvaccinated’

UK Secretary of State for Health Matt Hancock has warned that the new Indian variant of Covid-19 could spread like “wildfire” among those who are unvaccinated, but suggested early data indicates vaccines work against it.

In a Sunday interview with Sky News, Hancock said the Indian variant is “becoming the dominant strain in some parts of the country,” such as Bolton and Blackburn, but early data gives the government “a degree of confidence that the vaccines work against” it.

“We're in a race between the vaccination program and the virus and this new variant has given this virus some extra legs in that race,” he explained, “But… we have a high degree of confidence that the vaccine will overcome.”

Hancock warned that due to the variant’s speed of transmission, it “can really spread like wildfire among the unvaccinated,” and so the government is focusing on getting as many people vaccinated as possible, though with a focus on those “most vulnerable to ending up in hospital.”

Over 1,300 cases of the Indian variant have been recorded in the UK so far, according to Hancock.

He also revealed that the government will make its final decision on whether Stage 4 of the lifting of lockdown restrictions will go ahead on June 14th. If the government deems reopening to be safe, the final restrictions – including social distancing rules and a ban on nightclubs – could be lifted on June 21st.

Stage 3 is set to commence on Monday and will allow people to meet up in large groups outside, and small groups to meet inside. Indoor hospitality and entertainment such as restaurants, pubs, cinemas and museums will reopen, and a larger number of people will be allowed to attend weddings and funerals.

According to Boone, the new positive is not part of the on-field coaching staff and the team didn’t name the person, as it did with pitching coach Matt Blake, first base coach Reggie Willits and third base coach Phil Nevin. Four other unnamed members of the staff also tested positive — as well as Gleyber Torres, so far the only player to test positive.

The staff member that tested positive Saturday is quarantining in Baltimore and, like the previous eight, is fully vaccinated.

The other positive cases remain in quarantine in Tampa.

One other staff member was unavailable for Sunday’s game against the Orioles at Camden Yards due to contact tracing. The team was bringing in another member of the organization to make up for the absence and they will travel with the team to the next series in Texas, which begins Monday.

“We’re doing the best we can with it and fortunately he’s another one that feels good,” Boone said of the new case. “We continue to try and be vigilant and handle it as best we can.”

It’s forced members of the staff into new roles.

“I’m thankful that we have so many good people, not only who have taken on more load and responsibility, but also taken on responsibilities that aren’t in their expertise,” Boone said. “I’m proud of how everyone has handled it and the job everyone is doing behind the scenes to make a difficult situation as seamless as possible.”

Report: Israel Showed U.S. Intelligence ‘Smoking Gun’ on Hamas Using Media Building

Israelreportedly showed U.S. officials “smoking gun” intelligenceSunday indicating that the Palestinian Hamas terrorist organization was using the Jala Tower in Gaza, which also housed the Associated Press, Al Jazeera, and other international news outlets.

On Saturday, Israel destroyed the tower, after warning the occupants to allow them to leave. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) tweeted that the building contained “Hamas military intelligence assets” and that the media had been used as “human shields.”

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu also highlighted the destruction of the building on his Instagram account.

The Associated Press denied any knowledge that the building had been used by terrorists, and international press freedom groups accused Israel of trying to censor coverage of events in Gaza. The Biden administration also complained about the strike.

But on Sunday, according to the Jerusalem Post, Israel shared its evidence that the building had been used by Hamas:

Israel shared intelligence with the US showing how Hamas operated inside the same building with the Associated Press and Al-Jazeera in Gaza, officials in Jerusalem said on Sunday.

Officials in more than one government office confirmed that US President Joe Biden’s phone call to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Saturday was, in part, about the bombing of the building, and that Israel showed Biden and American officials the intelligence behind the action.

“We showed them the smoking gun proving Hamas worked out of that building,” a source close to Foreign Minister Gabi Ashkenazi said. “I understand they found the explanation satisfactory.”

Hamas continued firing rockets at Israeli communities on Sunday, even as its officials claimed that they wanted a ceasefire.

BLM Cofounder Patrisse Cullors Laments ‘White Supremacy’ in Housing Market

Black Lives Matter cofounder Patrisse Cullors shared a post on Instagram lamenting “white supremacy” in the housing market, weeks after her multi-million housing portfolio was revealed.

In the Instagram post, Cullors shared an NPR article about black homeownership levels.

“Thank you @npr for highlighting the history of racism inside of the housing market and why Black homeownership has always been a way to disrupt white supremacy,” Cullors wrote.

The NPR story was part of a bigger documentary called We Hold These Truths, which investigated how blacks have been discriminated against by the real estate industry and government policy for decades.

The report highlighted the experiences of black people residing in Compton, California, revealing 41.8 percent of black households own their own homes.

That rate is nearly identical to the level of black homeownership 50 years ago in the early 1970s.

In 1970, which was shortly after the Fair Housing Act passed in 1968, the national homeownership rate for black households was 41.8 percent. In 2019, it increased slightly to 42.3 percent — marking a net increase of 1.2 percent from nearly 50 years ago.

Experts say the reasons for low homeownership rates stem from low wages, historic unemployment, and a recession-related foreclosure crisis that hit the black community especially hard.

Meanwhile, Cullors has not faced any issues in the housing market. She bought four homes since 2016, some in predominantly white neighborhoods of Los Angeles, amassing a real estate empire worth nearly $3 million.

Cullors claimed the four homes were purchased to provide for her extended family.

Pro-Palestinian Convoy Drives Through London, Protester Yells ‘F*** the Jews’, ‘Rape Their Daughters’

British politicians have reacted with disgust and anger at footage posted to social media appearing to show pro-Palestinian protesters driving through Jewish neighbourhoods in London, with a protester heard yelling through a loudspeaker antisemitic and sexually violent comments.

The footage, retweeted by prominent politicians, showed several cars draped in Palestinian flags driving down Finchley Road in St John’s Wood, north London, on Sunday.

One man is heard shouting through a loudspeaker remarks including: “Fuck the Jews”, “Fuck their mothers”, “Fuck their daughters”, and “Rape their daughters”.

Remarking on the sight of three men standing through their sunroofs waving Palestinian flags, London Jewish newspaper Jewish News compared it to “scenes reminiscent of the darkest days of Islamic State”.

London’s Metropolitan Police Service announced it was investigating the footage, saying: “We are aware of a video appearing to show anti-Semitic language being shouted from a convoy of cars in the St John’s Wood area this afternoon.

“Officers are carrying out urgent enquiries to identify those responsible. This sort of behaviour will not be tolerated.”

Communities Secretary Robert Jenrick said: “This, on the streets of London is deeply disturbing. Vile, criminal hatred like this must not be tolerated.”

The incidents occurred the day after a mass anti-Israel protest in London, at which far-leftist Jeremy Corbyn spoke, calling for Britain to cut military cooperation with Israel and demand the UK recognise the Palestinian state.

Turkey’s President Erdogan Claims Europe an ‘Open-Air Prison’ for Muslims

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has claimed that Muslims in Europe live in what amounts to an “open-air prison” and that Islamophobia was as dangerous as the Wuhan coronavirus.

The Turkish leader made his statements earlier this week during a television broadcast in which he criticised European countries for “Islamophobia”, saying: “The Islamophobia virus, as dangerous as coronavirus, is spreading rapidly, especially in European countries.”

According to a report from the Turkish state-run Anadolu Agency, President Erdogan went on to add: “Europe, where 35 million Muslims live today, including six million Turks, is increasingly turning into an open-air prison for our brothers and sisters.”

“In many Western countries, especially in France, being a Muslim, living in a Muslim way, is enough to be discriminated against. Women wearing headscarves, in particular, are the biggest victims of this growing wave of hatred in Europe,” Erdogan said.

The Turkish president also claimed that “racist fascists” were attacking Muslims in the streets, on public transport, and in other areas “almost every day”.

He also referred to a debate between French Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin and populist National Rally leader Marine Le Pen, who Erdogan called “the leader of a racist party”, and stated the debate was “embarrassing”.

The February debate shocked many observers as Darmanin accused Le Pen of being “soft” on Islam.

“You are starting to show softness, you need to take vitamins again. You are not ready to legislate on religion and you say that Islam is not even a problem,” Darmanin said.

Erdogan’s comments come after months of tensions between him and French President Emmanuel Macron after the latter decided to crack down on political Islam and Islamist groups in the wake of the beheading of teacher Samuel Paty.

Erdogan even accused Macron of being mentally unstable in October after the French president defended free speech, just days after Paty was beheaded in the street by a Chechen refugee for showing cartoons of the Islamic prophet Mohammed to his class.

“What’s the problem of the individual called Macron with Islam and with the Muslims?” Erdogan had said, adding: “Macron needs treatment on a mental level.”

In March of this year, President Macron warned that Erdogan and his government would likely make attempts to interfere in next year’s French presidential elections, saying: “Obviously, there will be attempts at interference for the next election. They’re written, and the threats are not veiled.”

Female Gulf Cartel Commander Arrested in Mexican Border City

MATAMOROS, Tamaulipas – Military forces arrested a female commander with the Gulf Cartel during a raid in the border city of Matamoros. The woman had a federal arrest warrant on organized crime charges.

The case took place this week, when troops from Mexico’s Navy carried out a raid in the Arboledas neighborhood, not far from Veterans International Bridge in Matamoros. The military troops

surprised Martha Alicia “La China” Perez Ferel, also known as Doña Martha, who was not able to fight back or escape. After the arrest, federal police officers moved Perez to an open field where a military helicopter landed and flew her to the airport in Matamoros. Her nickname, La China, is not to be confused with Melissa Calderon Ojeda, a jailed Sinaloa Cartel enforcer with the same nickname.

The operation caught locals by surprise leading to some seeking shelter expecting a gun battle at any moment. Other high-profile arrests in Matamoros led to shootouts.

According to information released by Mexico’s Attorney General’s Office (FGR), Perez has since been sent to a prison in the state of Guanajuato awaiting trial.

Mexican law enforcement sources consulted by Breitbart Texas revealed that Doña Martha has been a cell leader with the Gulf Cartel. Mexican authorities began hunting her in 2018 and in 2019 they came close to capturing her during a similar raid. She and her daughters managed to escape.

Hacker attack shuts down IT system of Ireland’s health services, badly affecting one of Europe’s busiest maternity hospitals

Ireland’s health service has temporarily shut down all of its IT systems due to a “significant ransomware attack,” and one of Europe’s busiest maternity hospitals is badly affected as most appointments have been canceled.

The Health Service Executive (HSE) took to Twitter on Friday to announce a “significant ransomware attack” on its IT systems. The HSE says it has taken the precaution of shutting down all of its IT systems in order to protect them and to be able to fully assess the situation.

HSE CEO Paul Reid told Irish media that the attack targeted information sharing systems across the HSE’s network stored on central servers. Reid went on to describe the attack as “an internationally operated criminal operation,” and said the health service was working with the national police service, the Defence Forces, and third-party cyber security experts to respond to it.

Irish broadcaster RTÉ reported that Dublin’s Rotunda Hospital, the oldest continuously operating maternity hospital in the world, and one of the busiest in Europe, canceled all outpatient visits on Friday except for expectant mothers who are 36 weeks pregnant or later, or for urgent appointments. Local media reports that other hospitals are likely to be affected as well.

The HSE apologized to the patients and the public, and promised to provide further information as it becomes available. It said, however, that Covid-19 vaccinations were not affected.

Ransomware are computer viruses that threaten to delete files unless a ransom is paid. A ransom demand has not yet been made, however, according to Reid.

Hospitals often become a target for hackers. In September 2020, a major hospital chain in the US with more than 400 locations was hit by what was described as one of the largest medical cyberattacks in US history.

Also in September 2020, Germany’s University Hospital of Düsseldorf saw its computer systems disabled by hackers, and a patient died while doctors tried to transfer her to another facility.

Les Moonves has waved goodbye to his $120 million exit package from ViacomCBS as he dropped the legal battle over his 2018 firing from the TV giant.

ViacomCBS said Friday that the long-running dispute between the company and its former CEO has been 'resolved' and Moonves has agreed to walk away from the multi-million dollar severance package.

The ousted TV boss is receiving some money from the matter though the amount and terms have not been revealed.

Moonves was once one of the most influential names in television but was ousted from CBS in 2018 amid allegations of sexual misconduct and harassment from multiple women spanning three decades.

But Moonves challenged his firing and his $120 million severance was set aside until the matter could be resolved.

The long-running dispute was finally put to bed Friday with New York-based ViacomCBS announcing in a Securities and Exchange Commission filing that the matter had been resolved and the arbitration dismissed.

'The disputes between Mr. Moonves and CBS have now been resolved, and on May 14, 2021, the parties dismissed the arbitration proceeding,' ViacomCBS said.

The $120 million, which has been held in a grantor trust while the legal battle played out, will go back to ViacomCBS in its entirety.

It gave no further details of the agreement.

However, Moonves will receive some payment as a result of the resolution, the two parties confirmed in a joint statement.

'Leslie Moonves, CBS and a contractor to CBS have​ resolved their disputes,' Moonves and ViacomCBS said.

'The cost of the settlement will be borne by the contractor. Mr. Moonves has decided to contribute the entire settlement amount to various charities.

'There will be no further comment regarding this settlement by Mr. Moonves or CBS.'

CIA spying scandal in Switzerland shows the best way for intelligence services to read your messages is to OWN the platform

The CIA’s role in the Crypto AG case makes clear that spies don’t need a way into messaging apps, but a secret bird’s-eye view from the word go. This is far more effective than any ‘backdoor’ foreign powers may have access to.

On May 12, the head of Switzerland’s federal intelligence service (Nachrichtendienst des Bundes, NDB), Jean-Philippe Gaudin, announced his resignation.

Local media reports say Gaudin’s departure stems from a falling-out with Defense Minister Viola Amherd over his handling of the Crypto AG scandal – namely, he failed to inform her about the affair until it was already public knowledge.

In February 2020, it was revealed that the company, which produced encryption machines for use by foreign governments, was secretly bought in 1970 and controlled thereafter by the US Central Intelligence Agency and West Germany’s Bundesnachrichtendienst. This connivance meant the pair – and by extension the US National Security Agency (NSA) and its UK counterpart and close collaborator, Government Communications Headquarters (GCHQ) – could easily decode any messages sent on Crypto AG’s devices.

Allegations that the company was compromised to some degree by Western intelligence had swirled for many years prior. In March 1992, suspicions to this effect on the part of Iranian intelligence led to the arrest of Crypto AG salesman Hans Buehler in Tehran. Completely unaware of his employer’s ultimate owners, the luckless staffer was nonetheless detained and interrogated for nine months, only being released after the company paid a $1 million ransom.

However, the extent of the infiltration came as a shock even to those who’d long suspected the NSA had somehow managed to crack Crypto AG’s coding. The exposure also sparked intense outcry in Switzerland, with citizens so appalled that their allegedly neutral country had been exploited in this manner, the parliament’s intelligence oversight committee launched an official probe into the matter.

Today the NATO website posted a speech delivered by its Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg at the 3rd German Ecumenical Church Days which reveals more about the military bloc he heads up than he probably realized it did.

He began his pontifications by saying in his line of work he meets people from all walks of life: from students to soldiers and from parliamentarians to the Pope. No doubt he meets far more soldiers than popes. One is reminded of the bumper sticker one could see during the Vietnam War years: Join the Army; travel to exotic, distant lands; meet exciting, unusual people and kill them.

Stoltenberg, the people person, the all kinds of people person, was introduced by former German defense minister Thomas de Maizière, who has also not likely met many popes.

The North Atlantic prelate alluded to the story of Jesus’ multiplication of the fish and loaves in the four Gospels that is referred to as the Feeding of the 5,000, stating, with a quote from it, “The theme of this year’s conference is ‘schaut hin‘ – go and see….”

NATO didn’t record whether anyone in the audience invited him to go and see select bomb and missile craters in Serbia, Afghanistan and Libya.

He seemed quite pleased with himself in saying, “As the Latin saying goes, if you want peace, prepare for war.” He didn’t cite it in Latin, though, in which case it’s a Roman saying.

While pounding his chest in triumphalist exultation – figuratively of course – he felt compelled to add: “Our Alliance started with 12 members. And today we stand 30 nations strong.” And forty partners. To preserve peace.

Of course no self-celebratory orgy of the sort would be complete without reference to the fall of the Berlin Wall. And his wasn’t. The Fall of the Wall, which he mercifully refrained from comparing to the collapse of the Tower of Babel and the sonic attack on the walls of Jericho, brought about a new dispensation, a new and everlasting Covenant if you will, which “allow[ed] a divided Germany – and a divided continent – to reunite.” Unite under the boot of history’s only global military bloc. Maybe walls aren’t so bad.

Then he switched gears from “and then they lived happily ever after” to a Pandora’s box of threats and horrors. In his sequence they are:

A more assertive Russia.

Sophisticated cyber-attacks.

Brutal terrorism. [As opposed to gentle terrorism?]

Nuclear proliferation.

Climate change.

The rise of China.

With the first, it appears that the reunification Germany and reunification of Europe (?) didn’t accomplish anything but bring NATO right up against Russia’s border. Or according to NATO logic, brought Russia to NATO’s Eastern Flank. How dare the devious, demonic, dastardly villains. Get thee behind me, Satan.

Now the Euroatlantic pontiff pulled out bell, book and candle to exorcise the malign influence and recited this anathema:

“Russia continues its aggressive and destabilising behaviour at home and abroad.

“With cyber-attacks against NATO Allies, including the German Bundestag.

“Its violation of the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Georgia and Ukraine.

The Lavon affair was a failed Israeli covert operation, codenamed Operation Susannah, conducted in Egypt in the summer of 1954. As part of the false flag operation,[1] a group of Egyptian Jews were recruited by Israeli military intelligence to plant bombs inside Egyptian-, American-, and British-owned civilian targets: cinemas, libraries, and American educational centers. The bombs were timed to detonate several hours after closing time. The attacks were to be blamed on the Muslim Brotherhood, Egyptian Communists, "unspecified malcontents", or "local nationalists" with the aim of creating a climate of sufficient violence and instability to induce the British government to retain its occupying troops in Egypt's Suez Canal zone.[2] The operation caused no casualties among the population, but cost the lives of four operatives: two cell members who committed suicide after being captured; and two operatives who were tried, convicted, and executed by the Egyptian authorities.

The operation ultimately became known as the Lavon affair after the Israeli defense minister Pinhas Lavon, who was forced to resign as a consequence of the incident. Before Lavon's resignation, the incident had been euphemistically referred to in Israel as the "Unfortunate Affair" or "The Bad Business" (Hebrew: העסק הביש‎, HaEsek HaBish). Israel publicly denied any involvement in the incident until 2005, when the surviving agents were awarded certificates of appreciation by Israeli President Moshe Katsav.[3]

In the early 1950s, the United States initiated a more activist policy of support for Egyptian nationalism; this aim was often in contrast with Britain's policy of maintaining its regional hegemony. Israel feared that the US policy, which encouraged Britain to withdraw its military forces from the Suez Canal, would embolden the military ambitions towards Israel of Gamal Abdel Nasser, the President of Egypt. Israel at first sought to influence this policy through diplomatic means, but was frustrated.[4]

In the summer of 1954, Colonel Binyamin Gibli, the chief of Israel's military intelligence directorate Aman, initiated 'Operation Susannah' in order to reverse that decision. The goal of the Operation was to carry out bombings and other acts of sabotage in Egypt, with the aim of creating an atmosphere in which the British and American opponents of British withdrawal from Egypt would be able to gain the upper hand and block the British withdrawal from Egypt.

According to historian Shabtai Teveth, who wrote one of the more detailed accounts, the assignment was "To undermine Western confidence in the existing Egyptian regime by generating public insecurity and actions to bring about arrests, demonstrations, and acts of revenge, while totally concealing the Israeli factor. The team was accordingly urged to avoid detection, so that suspicion would fall on the Muslim Brotherhood, the Communists, 'unspecified malcontents' or 'local nationalists'."[2]

Secret cell

The top-secret cell, Unit 131,[5] which was to carry out the operation, had existed since 1948 and under Aman since 1950. At the time of Operation Susannah, Unit 131 was the subject of a bitter dispute between Aman (military intelligence) and Mossad (national intelligence agency) over who should control it.

Unit 131 operatives had been recruited several years earlier, when the Israeli intelligence officer Avraham Dar arrived in Cairo under the cover of a British citizen from Gibraltar named John Darling. He had recruited several Egyptian Jews, known as sayanim (Hebrew: סייענים‎), who had also previously been active in helping Jews flee to Israel, activities that Egypt deemed illegal, and trained them for covert operations.

The spokesperson declines to say if the Israeli army was aware how many civilian casualties such a strike would cause. They decline to answer more questions, saying they lack further details.

Armed confrontation, which has already led to the deaths and wounds of dozens of people, including women and children, must be immediately stopped," he said at an extraordinary online meeting of the United Nations Security Council on the Palestinian-Israeli settlement.

Moscow calls for efforts to create conditions for relaunching peace dialogue between Palestine and Israel, Vershinin said.

Dozens hurt in bleacher collapse at Israeli synagogue

The accident comes weeks after a stampede at a religious festival in northern Israel that killed 45 ultra-Orthodox Jews.

JERUSALEM (AP) — Israeli medics said Sunday that dozens of people were injured in a bleacher collapse at an uncompleted synagogue in a West Bank settlement near Jerusalem.

Amateur footage showed the collapse occurring during prayers Sunday evening in Givat Zeev, just outside Jerusalem, at the beginning of the Jewish holiday of Shavuot. The ultra-Orthodox synagogue was packed with hundreds of people.

The Magen David Adom rescue service said 54 people were injured, including five seriously hurt and four in moderate condition. The injured were evacuated to Jerusalem-area hospitals.

The Israeli military said in a statement that it dispatched medics and other search and rescue troops to assist at the scene. Army helicopters were airlifting the injured.

Israeli authorities traded blame at the scene of the disaster.

The mayor of Givat Zeev said the building was unfinished and dangerous, and that the police had ignored previous calls to take action. Jerusalem police chief Doron Turgeman said the disaster was a case of "negligence" and that there would likely be arrests.

Deddi Simhi, head of the Israel Fire and Rescue service, told Israel’s Channel 12 that "this building is not finished. It doesn’t even have a permit for occupancy, and therefore let alone holding events in it."

Television footage from the scene showed the building was incomplete, with exposed concrete and boards visible.

The accident comes weeks after a stampede at a religious festival in northern Israel that killed 45 ultra-Orthodox Jews.

The stampede triggered renewed criticism over the broad autonomy granted to the country’s politically powerful ultra-Orthodox minority.

Last year, many ultra-Orthodox communities flouted coronavirus safety restrictions, contributing to high outbreak rates in their communities and angering the broader secular public.

IDF is undermining trust with media and it will hurt Israel - comment

Was the deception brilliant? Yes. Did it come at a price? Yes.

Let me say this upfront: the IDF has carried out impressive operations in recent years, using subterfuge and deception to spare Israeli lives, to win tactical battles, and to avoid larger escalations.

The military deserves credit for its creativity and improvisation, but sometimes what it does needs to be looked at through a wider prism – that there is also a price to be paid, and that price is the media’s trust in the military.

Under Chief of Staff Lt.-Gen. Aviv Kohavi and the two IDF spokespersons he has worked with – Ronen Manelis and Hidai Zilberman – the army has fundamentally undermined the media’s trust in the IDF by weaponizing the Spokesperson’s Unit.

So while today’s tactical success seems impressive in the moment, what about tomorrow? What happens when the military will need the media to believe what it says when the IDF launches another maneuver, or there is an operational mishap that needs clarification? The media won’t believe a word.

The background: in September 2019, Hezbollah was threatening to strike Israel in retaliation for an alleged Israeli drone attack in Lebanon a week earlier. What the IDF did was notable and impressive: it cleared the border of troops and then parked an empty jeep near Moshav Avivim. Hezbollah took the bait and fired an anti-tank missile at the jeep.

What the IDF did next was even more remarkable: soldiers were loaded onto stretchers, and a helicopter medevac landed at Rambam Medical Center in Haifa where it unloaded the wounded, whose bloody gashes were wrapped in bandages.

Only no one was wounded. The soldiers were fake, as were the blood and bandages. By the time this became known, Nasrallah already felt that his act of revenge had been successful and that there was no need for more attacks.

But if the military is caught deceiving the media, why would the ICC believe that it’s not being deceived as well?
