Raven

“But for some, the Raven will always be the place whose owners listened in on a governor’s car-phone call.

“Yeah, that was a big deal,” Ricky concedes. “We were old communications guys, and we figured out how to tap cell phones — or not tap, but we took special radios, and we attached them to tape recorders.”

“The Dunningtons had figured out that all you needed to do to listen to car phone calls was broaden the frequencies picked up by their

ham radios.

“They’re talking on the phone, they tell the other guy, ‘We shouldn’t be talking on the phone like this. Somebody else might hear.’" Ricky says, laughing. “The other guy says, ‘Oh yeah, you’re right.’ Then they keep talking on the phone!”

They weren’t really trying to listen in on anything in particular, Ricky says, but in 1988 one of those recordings captured a call between Gov. Douglas Wilder and a political supporter.”
