Calgary police arrest pastor for organizing services violating public health orders
A Calgary pastor was arrested Sunday afternoon for organizing a church service violating public health orders.
Police said in a news release that Pastor Tim Stephens organized a church service held at Fairview Baptist Church that did not comply with public health orders requiring masking, physical distancing, and attendance limits.
The gathering also went against a Court of Queen’s Bench order granting Alberta Health Services (AHS) an injunction against public gathering that do not comply with public health orders, police say.
“The pastor acknowledged the injunction, but chose to move forward with today’s service, ignoring requirements for social distancing, mask wearing and reduced capacity limits for attendees,” CPS said in a news release.
Calgary police say AHS has attempted to work collaboratively with Fairview Baptist Church “for several weeks” to address compliance with public health orders.
“It is only when significant risk is identified or continued non-compliance is noted that AHS resorts to enforcement action,” CPS said.
Police say they did not enter the church during the service on Sunday.
“CPS acknowledges it is important to understand that law enforcement recognizes people's desire to participate in faith-based gatherings as well as the right to protest. However, as we are still in a global pandemic, we all must comply with public health orders in order to ensure everyone's safety and wellbeing.”
Stephens wrote on a question and answer page on Fairview’s website dated March 5 that the church will continue to hold gatherings to “stay faithful to our commitment to God.”
The church has been found to be in violation of the public health act on numerous occasions this year, including tickets and fines being issued.
Stephens is the fourth religious leader in Alberta to be arrested for organizing religious gatherings breaking public health restrictions.
Artur Pawlowski and his brother Dawid Pawlowski were arrested by CPS last week, and James Coates of GraceLife Church outside Edmonton was arrested in February.

Libria, a totalitarian city-state established by survivors of World War III, blames human emotion as the cause for the war. Any activity or object that stimulates emotion is strictly forbidden. Those in violation are labelled "Sense Offenders" and sentenced to death. The population is forced to take a daily injection of "Prozium II" to suppress emotion. Libria is governed by the Tetragrammaton Council, led by "Father", who communicates propaganda through giant video screens throughout the city. At the pinnacle of law enforcement are the Grammaton Clerics, trained in the martial art of gun kata. Clerics frequently raid homes to search for and destroy illegal materials – art, literature and music – executing violators on the spot. A resistance movement, known as the "Underground", emerges to topple Father and the Tetragrammaton Council.

Reston, VA., February 16, 2021 – LookingGlass Cyber Solutions, a leader in operationalizing threat intelligence, announced the appointment today of Lt. Gen. James Clapper to its Advisory Board.
Clapper served from 2010 – 2017 as the Director of National Intelligence. In that position, he led the United States intelligence community and served as the top intelligence advisor to the President.
Previously, Clapper served in two administrations as the Under Secretary of Defense for Intelligence, where he was the principal staff assistant and advisor to the Secretary and Deputy Secretary of Defense on intelligence, counterintelligence, and security matters for the Department. He returned to the government two days after 9/11 as the first civilian director of the National Imagery and Mapping Agency (NIMA). He served in this capacity for almost five years, transforming it into the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency (NGA).
Clapper’s service and dedication to the security of the U.S. can be seen in the many awards he has received: three National Intelligence Distinguished Service Medals, two Defense Distinguished Service Medals, the Air Force Distinguished Service Medal, the Coast Guard’s Distinguished Public Service Award, three Department of Defense Distinguished Civilian Service Awards, the Presidentially-conferred National Security Medal, and many other U.S. civilian and military, as well as foreign government, awards and decorations.
He is the also author of the New York Times best seller book, “Facts and Fears: Hard Truths from a Life in Intelligence.”
