Liz Cheney Likens Trump Election Conspiracies to Chinese Communist Party's Attacks on Democracy

Wyoming GOP Congresswoman Liz Cheney, who was ousted last week as the Republican Party's third-highest ranking member, likened former President Donald Trump's unfounded election fraud conspiracies to Chinese Communist Party rhetoric.

Cheney vowed to "restore" the Republican Party's character in the wake of Trump's continued election conspiracies and fanatical supporters lingering in the GOP. Speaking on ABC's This Week with host George Stephanopoulos Sunday morning, Cheney ridiculed fellow Republicans who she said have more loyalty to Trump than any conservative policies.

She promised to not let the party be "dragged backwards by the very dangerous lies of a former president," citing Trump's baseless election fraud claims that he somehow defeated President Joe Biden. Cheney also warned that support for Trump's claims could lead to another deadly January 6 Capitol riot-type of event in the future.

"I think it's dangerous," the Wyoming Republican said in during her TV appearance. "I think that we have to recognize how quickly things can unravel. We have to recognize what it means for the nation to have a former president who has not conceded and who continues to suggest that our electoral system cannot function, cannot do the will of the people."

Cheney went on to compare Trump's election fraud claims to the rhetoric used by the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) to attack democratic countries like the United States. The former president has attempted to liken Biden to the Beijing government for years.

"To cause that kind of questioning about our process, frankly, it's the same kinds of things that the Chinese Communist Party says about democracy: that it's a failed system, that America is a failed nation. I won't be part of that," she said.

"I mean, you know, we've now seen the consequences. We've — we've seen how far the president — President Trump was willing to go. We've seen not only his, his provocation of the attack, but his refusal to send help when it was needed, his refusal to immediately say, 'Stop.' And that in and of itself, in my view, was a very clear violation of his oath and of his duty," Cheney continued.

Following last week's House promotion into Cheney's seat, Elise Stefanik announced that "Trump is the leader" of the GOP. House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy and the number two House Republican, Congressman Steve Scalise, stood behind Stefanik during the press conference.

Trump issued numerous statements Saturday through his Save America PAC email list that continued to float baseless election fraud conspiracies in states such as Arizona. The former president complained that Fox News and even Newsmax have been "afraid to cover" his unfounded claims over the threat of lawsuits from companies like Smartmatic.

Newsweek reached out to Cheney's Wyoming congressional offices for additional remarks Sunday afternoon.
