You would just be going along at 35, 40k ft. and all of a sudden you would pass one of these fucking things. Overhead, underneath, off the wing. It's basically standing still. Anon, "see and avoid" is and always has been the first rule of safety. You learn that as a student pilot. Whether a VFR aircraft or a Wx balloon, Geese or anything else. The Wx balloons are not that big and by the time you see one, you've passed it. Unless you hit it which I was fortunate over my 35 years and 25K hrs. of flight time, to never experience. if you know about Mode C then you know that if these things are equipped with it, it makes your situational awareness a 1000 times better in the cockpit than the see and avoid concept.
