Doctors are 'months late' in conducting a risk assessment on John Hinckley Jr., the would-be assassin who shot Ronald Reagan and was released from a mental hospital in 2016.

A federal judge freed Hinckley after 35 years of confinement at St Elizabeth's Hospital, DC, on condition that medics provide an 'updated assessment' of the threat he posed to the public within 18 months.

This deadline passed in January, Judge Paul Freidman said, as he gave Hinckley's defense attorneys and prosecutors until Friday to inform him of suitable dates for a hearing on the future of the shooter's 'convalescent leave'.
