Gates worked under the partnership with MITS until IBM approached Microsoft in July of 1980. At the time IBM was the leading supplier of computer equipment, and they still remain a powerhouse in the industry to this day. IBM contracted Microsoft to program the operating systems for their PC’s, which eventually became the catalyst of Microsoft’s success. According to Wikipedia, “The contract itself only earned Microsoft a relatively small fee. It was the prestige brought to Microsoft by IBM’s adoption of their operating system that would be the origin of Microsoft’s transformation from a small business to the leading software company in the world.”
Microsoft moved to Bellevue, Washington on January 1st, 1979- but the tools, ideas, labor and capital all came from New Mexico. The heart of our state helped create one of the largest and most influential companies to ever exist, and the city of Albuquerque was the springboard for the 2 richest Americans alive today.

Why did Bill Gates and Paul Allen start Microsoft in New Mexico?
MITS, maker of the Altair 8800 computer, was Microsoft’s first customer, even before Microsoft was officially organized and named. MITS was based in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
When Gates and Allen first decided to approach MITS about developing a BASIC programming language interpreter for the Altair 8800 in 1975, they were both in Massachusetts. They did their software development there, using only a simulator and no physical Altair 8800. When it was time to demo the software to MITS, Allen flew to Albuquerque.
When the project was green-lighted, and MITS had more software work for them to do, the two relocated to Albuquerque. Allen worked for MITS, and Gates and Allen started Microsoft (actually, Micro-Soft, initially - a name that Allen came up with). The choice of location was purely based on being physically near their first customer.
It wasn’t long before Microsoft had many more customers besides MITS. They were developing BASIC interpreters and other software for a wide variety of computers. In 1979, they moved the company to the Seattle, Washington area, because:
Both Gates and Allen had grown up in that area.
They were getting tired of traveling there to visit family and friends.
It was more difficult to recruit top programming talent in Albuquerque than in the Seattle area.

Sure, there were problems, but consider what MITS accomplished! The first computer stores anywhere were set up to sell Altairs. The open Altair bus paved the way for a microcomputer revolution. And everyone who uses Microsoft Basic can thank Ed Roberts for the decision to select the version of Basic developed by Paul Allen and Bill Gates for the Altair over the other languages he considered.
In the final analysis, MITS pioneered nearly every aspect of today's microcomputer industry. Computer shows, users' groups, newsletters, seminars, software exchanges, peripherals, software products, quality documentation, and cheap computers, all commonplace today, were first pioneered for the personal computer market by MITS.
Recently Ed and I lamented the fact so many of today's computer users think Apple, Radio Shack, or even IBM invented personal computing. We also wondered about the distorted versions of the early days at MITS written by some of today's computer journalists.
