The Bilderberg meetings(1) and World Economic Forum(2) (including the Young Global Leaders and Global Shapers) each bring together influential personalities from all parts of the world at regular intervals for interesting and fruitful exchanges of views.
These meetings are likely to address issues related to culture, art, education, sport and other issues also discussed in the Committee on Culture and Education. The outcomes of these meetings are likely to have a political and social impact. Indeed these organisations influence the lives of citizens and society in the same way as politicians, who are, however, acting on behalf of the public.
-
What view does the Commission take of such organisations and what is its assessment of their impact on society? Is there any degree of personal involvement or even systematic cooperation?
-
Does the Commission regard this as a challenge to its own political decision-making powers or those of the EU Member States, especially given its obligation to act on behalf of EU citizens and uphold their interests?
-
Does the Commission concur with the objectives of the above organisations and is funding being made available to them?
