Mayor Lori Lightfoot says vaccinated people should still wear masks outside: 'I think that's smart'

Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot said Monday that people should keep wearing face masks outside regardless of their COVID-19 vaccination status, despite a new guidance issued by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention that says otherwise.

“I know for me personally I’m going to continue to wear a mask in public, and I’m going to encourage others to do so,”

Ms. Lightfoot, a Democrat, told MSNBC.

“We’ve got to make sure people are continuing to follow the public health guidance that has gotten us this far, and masks, I think, are a big and important part of that.”

The comments came after the CDC said last week that fully vaccinated Americans can participate in indoor and outdoor activities without wearing a mask or physical distancing, with the exception of using public transportation. The announcement prompted several states and localities to lift their mask mandates.
