US Says SecDef Austin Unable to Reach China’s Military Chief

Tensions are high between the US and China due to the stepped up US military activity in the Indo-Pacific

According to a report from Reuters, Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin has been unable to speak with China’s top military official despite multiple attempts to set up talks.

Tensions have been high between the militaries of the two nations due to the increased US military activity in sensitive areas like the South China Sea. US warships are regularly patrolling the disputed waters and frequently shadow Chinese ships. US spy planes are also constantly buzzing near China’s coast.

An unnamed US official told Reuters that there was a debate within the Biden administration about whether Austin should speak with Chinese Defense Minister Wei Fenghe or the vice-chairman of China’s Central Military Commission, Xu Qiliang. Xu is a member of China’s politburo and is said to have more influence with Chinese President Xi Jinping.

US officials told the Financial Times that Austin had made three requests to speak with Xu, but China has decided not to engage. While a high-level military meeting has not happened between the two countries during the Biden administration, there has been communication between the armed forces at lower levels.

Beijing certainly has reasons to be hesitant to engage with Austin. In March, Secretary of State Antony Blinken held a high-level meeting with China’s top diplomats in Alaska. Blinken opened the talks by accusing China of threatening the “rules-based order,” and things quickly fell apart from there.

The rhetoric out of the Biden administration has been harsh when it comes to Beijing, and the Pentagon has identified China as the top “pacing threat” facing the US military. In his first address to Congress, President Biden said the US was in a competition with China to “win the 21st century.” He also said that he told Chinese President Xi Jinping that the US will militarize the Indo-Pacific “just as we do with NATO in Europe.”

Grandmother arrested after not wearing face mask at school board meeting: 'You're not enforcing laws'

Kate Bossi, a grandmother and Sunday school teacher from New Hampshire, was arrested on Thursday after refusing to wear a face mask at a school board meeting.

Just moments after Bossi arrived at the Timberlane Regional School Board meeting to demand that children no longer be required to wear face masks in school, police arrested Bossi for refusing to wear a face mask.

Video of the incident shows police officers forcibly arrest Bossi after she entered an auditorium without wearing a mask.

"You are violating my rights right now. You are remiss," Bossi said.

Another man shouted, "Come on Sgt. Porter, you know this is wrong what they're doing to our kids," according to the New Hampshire Union Leader.

Jackie Wydola, the daughter of Bossi, also told officers, "Are you seriously doing this you guys. This is law enforcement. You're not enforcing laws, you're enforcing policy. That doesn't matter."

The meeting was planned to be held in-person, but was ultimately held remotely. "I didn't want to jeopardize the health of the staff and the students," school board chairwoman Kimberly Farah told the Union Leader, referring to maskless people.

Bossi was charged with disorderly conduct, according to her daughter.

What did Bossi say?

The grandmother told the Union Leader police announced her arrest immediately as she attempted to enter the meeting.

"I kept walking into the theater, and he goes, 'You're arrested,'" Bossi told WBZ-TV. "And I said, 'No, I'm taking my seat.'"

Bossi has several grandchildren who attend schools in the Timberlane Regional School District and has concerns over children being forced to wear face masks.

"When you say, 'Just wear the mask', you clearly have no understanding of early childhood development, and these are educators," she explained.

It's not exactly clear what prompted Bossi's arrest other than her entering an area that required face masks. According to WBZ, Bossi believes that she may have been arrested illegally.

The New Hampshire Department of Public Health Services, meanwhile, only recommends students wear face masks inside schools. The agency does not require they wear them.

"NH DPHS continues to recommend schools and childcare agencies implement face mask use whenever possible (for students/children, visitors, volunteers, staff, etc.), including outdoors in group settings. Face masks are strongly recommended indoors, especially if students are seated within 6 feet of each other," the state agency said in recently updated guidance. "Whether or not face masks are required in schools has always been left to local school district/board policy."

For two years, Jitarth Jadeja spent most of his time in the darkest corners of the web reading about conspiracy theories.

Mr Jadeja, 33, was an avid follower ofQAnon — a baseless, far-right theorythat started by alleging then-US president Donald Trump was fighting against a secret group of elites who ran a global child sex trafficking ring.

For hours each day, Mr Jadeja devoured cryptic predictions shared by an anonymous online poster called Q on the imageboard website 4chan.

Mr Jadeja clung to the shadowy figure's updates until he started noticing that Q was getting things wrong — a lot.

In early 2018 for instance, an anonymous poster on 8chan (now known as 8kun) requested Q to ask Mr Trump to say "tip top tippy top" as a shout-out to the QAnon community.

Four months after the post, Mr Trump mentioned the phrase in his Easter Egg Roll speech at the White House.

A winning jackpot ticket worth an estimated $666 million (USD $515m) was sold in the US, Mega Millions announced in a statement following Friday's drawing.

The winning numbers were 6-9-17-18-48, with 8 as the Mega Ball.

The jackpot won in Pennsylvania is the highest amount won in the state since it became a Mega Millions participant in 2010.

Alex Marlow: Don’t Call It ‘Stolen’ — How the Big Tech Masters of the Universe Imposed Their Will on the American Electorate

“The manipulation of social media platforms and activism by partisan Democrats in Silicon Valley was a deciding factor in the outcome of the 2020 presidential election,” Breitbart News Editor-in-Chief Alex Marlow explains in an op-ed in the Washington Times detailing his research into the 2020 election from his new book Breaking the News: Exposing the Establishment Media’s Hidden Deals and Secret Corruption.

Marlow writes that the 2020 election wasn’t “stolen” from Donald Trump in some “spy-thriller-esque” conspiracy involving Hugo Chavez and voting machines, and suggesting that it was “stolen” is the “easiest way to get removed from the Internet and social media.” However, the true story of how Democrats won is still troubling and reeks of corruption, according to Marlow.

First, he explains how Silicon Valley’s Masters of the Universe controlled the flow of critical information: “Some of the most powerful people in the world, the Masters of the Universe in Silicon Valley — none of them elected, most of them anonymous — turned dials to increase or decrease the flow of critical information the American electorate needed to make informed decisions in the presidential race.”

Marlow points to Big Tech censorship of stories about Hunter Biden’s corruption scandals, as well as Google suppressing Breitbart News’ traffic for anyone searching for articles about “Joe Biden.” Suppression of negative stories about Biden – as well as positive stories about Trump – had the potential of swinging voters in key states, Marlow notes, highlighting a poll conducted by the Media Research Center showing that 17 percent of Biden voters would have changed their votes had they known about certain stories widely covered by Breitbart News.

In addition to controlling the “flow of information,” Silicon Valley billionaires also spent lavishly to impact the election at the ballot box, particularly with the push for vote-by-mail, Marlow explains:

If you had any doubt those who control the flow of information in this country were determined to get Trump out of power, look no further than Mark Zuckerberg. The Facebook CEO spent hundreds of millions of dollars on “safe” election administration, but these efforts appear to have been little more than a de facto get-out-the-vote (GOTV) operation to benefit Democrats.

The centerpiece of this was COVID-safe “drop boxes.” These were bins that look like aluminum public trash cans, placed throughout the country, largely unprotected and unguarded (compared to in-person voting). These made it easier for people to “safely” turn in their mail-in ballots. Critics of the plan said that a high number of these drop boxes were placed in precincts that favor Democrats, particularly ones that were likely to be close races. These drop boxes weren’t necessary anyway, as in-person voting did not worsen the pandemic.

Yet, the sad reality is that Republicans, by and large, let the Masters of the Universe do all this. Perhaps it was because they feared harming the tech companies that were driving the stock markets to record highs, maybe they were following a blind loyalty to the free market, perhaps many were paid off by Big Tech lobbyists, certainly some were uninformed and ignorant. Whatever the explanation is, the GOP was wildly ineffective at protecting their own voters’ ability to freely read and share information.

Marlow calls on Republicans to pursue legislative reforms to rein in Big Tech, including “legislation to treat social media platforms as common carriers like trains or phone companies; this would prevent them from discriminating based on political ideology (or any other reason, for that matter).”

“Breaking up the biggest technology companies, reforms to antitrust law, and reforming the safe harbor for censorship of section 230 of the Communications Decency Act should all be considered,” he writes. “But most importantly, conservatives must turn to governors, legislatures, and Attorneys General in Republican-led states. This will take political willpower, but it can be done.”

Chicago Police Union Issues Vote of ‘No-Confidence’ in Mayor Lori Lightfoot

Members of Chicago’s biggest police union gave a vote of no confidence in Mayor Lori Lightfoot (D), police Superintendent David Brown, and First Deputy Superintendent Eric Carter on Wednesday.

The members cited what they described as a “lack of consideration” for police officers’ working conditions, according to WTTW.

In a YouTube message, Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 7 President John Catanzara said the union’s members spoke “loud and clear” during the general meeting Wednesday regarding the vote:

There was a motion from the floor and a second from the floor with the unanimous vote with zero dissent for a no confidence vote against the mayor, the superintendent, and the first deputy. The basis for this no-confidence vote is pretty simple. It’s two-fold. It’s a lack of respect for the Gold Star families and the cancellation of the St. Jude parade, not only to Gold Star families but our members who look forward to remembering the fallen every year.

The second part of the no confidence vote was the working conditions for our officers for the better part of a year now, and the lack of consideration for family life, social life, whatever the case may be. Too many of our officers have worked extended hours not voluntarily but forced, and the compensation, for starters, is the same whether you volunteer or not. That makes absolutely no sense, but the department doesn’t give a damn.

“The cancellation of days off and 12-hour shifts, yet again, for no reason, it is pretty close to a contract violation which says it has to be an emergency. There is no emergency,” Catanzara noted:

“The superintendent was very clear with me on the phone that the reason this was being done was because of the anniversary of George Floyd’s death and the fear that something might happen. That’s not justifiable,” he said.

According to the New York Post, Lightfoot blamed the union for prolonging talks on a deal for thousands of rank-and-file police officers who worked without a contract for over three years, saying they were losing “literally tens of thousands of dollars” in back pay every year.

“So frankly, getting a vote of no-confidence from that guy is a badge of honor,” Lightfoot commented in reference to Catanzara.

Tim Kaine Compares Catholic Teaching on Abortion to ‘Sharia Law’

U.S. Sen. Tim Kaine, who identifies as Catholic, weighed in this week on Holy Communion for pro-abortion politicians, asserting that requiring Catholic legislators to oppose abortion is like imposing sharia law on the nation.

In an essay for the far-left National Catholic Reporter, Kaine suggested abortion is not a matter of the life and death of an unborn child, but merely of norms governing human sexuality.

For bishops to demand “Catholics in public life not only live according to church doctrine but additionally shape the law, even to include the threat of criminal prosecution and punishment, to enshrine church doctrine on sexuality as mandatory for all Americans is contrary to our basic liberty,” he declared.

“Why would government require that Catholic sexuality doctrine, or Sharia law, or Orthodox Jewish rules about Sabbath observance, be followed by all?” he asked.

Following on the same assumption — that abortion has nothing to do with defending human life — Kaine went on to declare that “a decision by U.S. bishops to elevate issues of human sexuality, however important, above all others seems contrary to the Gospel.”

“No reading of the life of Jesus would suggest these issues as his primary, or even secondary, concern,” he states. “His towering message is about love of neighbor as oneself with a special focus on the poor, sick, hungry, marginalized.”

By contrast, a number of U.S. bishops have recently pointed out that Catholic opposition to abortion is important precisely because it seeks to defend the poorest and most marginalized members of society: the unborn.

“Abortion is the axe laid to the roots of the tree of human rights: when our culture encourages the violation of life at its youngest and most vulnerable condition, other ethical norms cannot stand for long,” San Francisco Archbishop Salvatore Cordileone wrote in a recent pastoral letter.

Abortion “is not a ‘Christian’ or ‘Catholic’ issue,” the archbishop noted, because “the dignity of the human person is a value that is, or should be, affirmed by us all.”

“We are all called to oppose abortion because we acknowledge the human being’s right to life, the unique human identity of each living, developing embryo from the moment of conception, and the horrendous violence of the procedure itself,” he added.

“To my fellow Catholics who openly advocate for the legitimacy of abortion, I beg you to heed the perennial call to conversion God Himself addresses to His people down through the ages,” Cordileone stated.

“Your Catholic ideals inspire you in your work to help those who experience discrimination, violence, and injustice, and you deserve the gratitude of your fellow Catholics and our nation for this service,” he said. “But we cannot empower the weak by crushing the weakest!”

As a Catholic who supports legal abortion, Tim Kaine found himself in a similar situation in 2016 — when running for vice president — to that of Joe Biden today.

At that time, the chairman of the Bishops’ Committee on Domestic Justice and Human Development, Bishop William Murphy of Rockville Center, slammed Kaine’s hypocrisy for his supposed personal opposition to abortion while publicly supporting it.

“Support of abortion by a candidate for public office, some of whom are Catholics, even if they use the fallacious and deeply offensive ‘personally opposed but…’ line, is reason sufficient unto itself to disqualify any and every such candidate from receiving our vote,” the bishop said.

“Many issues are very important in our society today,” he continued. “But none of them can eclipse the centrality of human life, especially innocent human life in the womb or at the end of life.”

“Above all and over all, the number one issue more fundamental and crucial than any other is abortion – that is the direct taking of innocent life,” he stated.

Report: One-Third of California’s Restaurants Permanently Closed Because of Pandemic

Approximately one-third of California’s restaurants permanently closed because of the shutdowns spurred by the Chinese coronavirus pandemic, according to reports.

Gov. California Newsom’s (D) extended lockdowns battered the restaurant industry in the Golden State, resulting in mass layoffs and, ultimately, the permanent closure of restaurants. According to the state’s Senate’s Special Committee on Pandemic Emergency Response, roughly a million workers in the industry were “furloughed or laid off.”

GOP Rep. Miller-Meeks: Summer Camps Should Open and Kids ‘Should Be Able to Go Without Masks’

Miller-Meeks said, “Children are very low rates of transmission, also very low rates of illness, and they’re outdoors. And we know that there is almost infinitesimal transmission outdoors. It’s one of the few things that the Chinese Communist Party was honest about at the beginning of the pandemic.
