>>Glenn Close Opens Up About Growing Up In A ‘Cult,’

https://pagesix.com/2021/05/21/glenn-close-says-shes-traumatized-after-cult-upbringing/

Glenn Close said in an emotional new interview that she is “psychologically traumatized” after growing up in a conservative religious cult called Moral Re-Armament.

“It’s astounding that something you go through at such a young stage in your life still has such a potential to be destructive,” the “Wife” star, 74, said in Oprah Winfrey and Prince Harry’s AppleTV+ mental health docuseries, “The Me You Can’t See,” which premiered Thursday.

“I think that’s childhood trauma, because of the devastation, emotional and psychological, of the cult. … I am psychologically traumatized.”

Close explained that her dad, William Close, first became involved with the group when she was a child. He then moved their family into MRA’s headquarters in Switzerland, where they lived for two years while he worked as a doctor in Africa. The Closes’ involvement with the movement ultimately lasted for a total of 15 years.

“It was basically a cult. Everyone spouted the same things, and there’s a lot of rules, a lot of control,” the actress recalled. “Because of how we were raised, anything you thought you’d do for yourself was considered selfish. We never went on any vacations or had any collective memories of stuff other than what we went through, which was really awful.”

Looking back, Glenn, who has been married three times, said she believes that her time in MRA played a role in her relationship troubles.

“I have not been successful in my relationships and finding a permanent partner, and I’m sorry about that,” she said. “I think it’s our natural state to be connected like that. I don’t think you ever change your trigger points, but at least you can be aware of them, and at least you can maybe avoid situations that might make you vulnerable, especially in relationships.”

She jokingly added, “It’s probably why we all have our dogs!”

The Oscar nominee was eventually able to get out of MRA at age 22 and went on to attend William & Mary college in Virginia to study drama. She did not clarify how she was able to cut ties with the group.

Glenn’s struggles were far from over after she broke free, however, and she ultimately ended up going to therapy. She noted that family members have also struggled with mental health issues, with her nephew suffering from schizophrenia and her sister Jessie Close being diagnosed with bipolar disorder.

“Jessie was always considered the wild one, the rebel, but when she came up to me one summer at my parents’ house in Wyoming, her kids were already in the car, and she came up to me and said, ‘I need help, I can’t stop thinking about killing myself,’ and for me it was a shock,” Glenn said. “She ended up in hospital. I took her there. She was finally at age 50 properly diagnosed with bipolar 1 with psychotic tendencies.”

Netflix CEO donates $3M to Newsom to fight recall

Netflix CEO Reed Hastings donated $3 million to a fund fighting against the recall of California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D).

Hastings's donation was made Thursday afternoon, marking one of the largest single donations to the Stop The Republican Recall fund to date, according to a contribution filing.

Stop The Republican Recall has also received donations from billionaire and philanthropist Stewart Resnick, Professional Engineers in California Government and the California Democratic Party, Deadline reported.

According to its website, the organization "stands with Gavin Newsom and is opposed to the Republican recall."

"Instead of helping fight the pandemic, these [Republican] partisan forces are pulling a page from the Trump playbook and attacking Californians," the site reads.

Last month, the California secretary of state's office confirmed that more than 1.6M signatures were collected in support of the recall effort. Only 1,495,709 signatures are required.

The recall effort began over Newsom's handling of the coronavirus pandemic.

Former gubernatorial candidate John Cox, former San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer, former congressman Doug Ose and Caitlyn Jenner have all announced candidacy in the recall race, Deadline noted.

In 2018, Hastings donated $7 million to the California Charter Schools Association’s effort to elect former Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, who was a gubernatorial candidate in the primary that year. However, Villaraigosa lost to Newsom and Cox.

Netflix’s Reed Hastings Gives $3 Million To Gavin Newsom Anti-Recall Fund

Reed Hastings, the co-CEO of Netflix, has shelled out a whopping $3 million to a fund opposed to the recall of California Governor Gavin Newsom.

The contribution was reported to the California Secretary of State on Thursday afternoon, and is the largest single contribution to date to the Stop The Republican Recall. (Hat tip: Politico).

Hastings, a longtime donor to Democrats, actually contributed $7 million in 2018 to the California Charter Schools Association’s effort to elect former Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa in the year’s gubernatorial primary. But Villaraigosa lost to Newsom and Republican John Cox, who advanced to the general election.

Stop The Republican Recall includes other major funding from the California Democratic Party, Professional Engineers in California Government PECG-PAC and Stewart Resnick.

Newsom will likely have a huge war chest. He also has been raising directly for his 2022 campaign fund, with recent donors including JJ Abrams and Katie McGrath, who each contributed $32,400. Jeffrey and Marilyn Katzenberg also each contributed that amount. Other donors include Sherry Lansing, Tom Rothman, Jeff Skoll, Chris Silbermann and Jeff Shell.

The recall is all but assured to make the ballot later this year, after the Secretary of State confirmed that organizers passed the signature threshold. Cox has declared his candidacy, along with former San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer, former congressman Doug Ose and Caitlyn Jenner.

Although the Secretary of State record of Hastings’ contribution listed him as CEO, Ted Sarandos was named his co-CEO in July.

Mount Nyiragongo: DR Congo plans to evacuate city as volcano erupts

The government in the Democratic Republic of Congo has launched an evacuation plan for the eastern city of Goma after a large volcano erupted.

Fountains of high lava burst from the Mount Nyiragongo into the night sky forming a thick orange cloud over Goma, which has a population of two million.

Panicked people were fleeing to safety.

The volcano, located about 10km (six miles) from the city, last erupted in 2002, killing 250 people and making 120,000 homeless.

Even before the government's announcement, crowds of residents were seen with mattresses and other belongings, fleeing towards the border with Rwanda.

Resident Carine Mbala told AFP: "There is a smell of sulphur. In the distance you can see giant flames coming out of the mountain."

People have been advised to stay calm, and evacuate towards the town of Sake.

Dario Tedesco, a volcanologist based in Goma, told Reuters news agency that a new fracture had opened up on the volcano, and that the lava was reaching the city's airport.

One highway that connects Goma with the city of Beni had already been engulfed by the lava, according to the Associated Press news agency. Electricity was out across large parts of the city.

A government spokesman said on Twitter that the government was discussing "urgent measures to take" after the prime minister convened an emergency meeting in the capital, Kinshasa.

Others have been posting videos of lava spewing out of the volcano, which recorded its deadliest eruption in 1977, when more than 600 people died.

Mount Nyiragongo is one of the world's more active volcanos but there were concerns that its activity had not been properly observed, since the World Bank cut funding amid allegations of corruption.
