"Shocking Act" Of "State Hijacking" Of Civilian Plane: US & EU Demand Belarusian Journalist's Immediate Release

update(9:30pm): It didn't take long for a flurry of condemnations from both EU and US officials in the hours after the Ryanair incident over Belarus, with US Secretary of State Antony Blinken calling for opposition journalist Raman Pratasevich's immediate release. Multiple EU leaders described Sunday's detention of Pratasevich after his commercial aircraft with 170 international passengers on board (including Americans, apparently) was diverted to Minsk complete with Belarusian MiG fighter escort as tantamount to "hijacking a civilian plane"…

"Hijacking of a civilian plane is an unprecedented act of state terrorism. It cannot go unpunished," Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki wrote on Twitter.

And Greece's Foreign Ministry agreed (the aircraft had departed from Athens en route to Lithuania), calling the incident "state hijacking": "Greece strongly condemns the state hijacking that took place today and resulted in the forced landing of Ryanair FR 4978, which operated the Athens-Vilnius route, in Minsk, Belarus," the statement said.

Top EU officials were unanimous in their outrage and condemnation…

The US statement from Secretary Blinken underscored that there had been Americans on board:

"This shocking act perpetrated by the Lukashenka regime endangered the lives of more than 120 passengers, including U.S. citizens," he said late in the day Sunday.

"Initial reports suggesting the involvement of the Belarusian security services and the use of Belarusian military aircraft to escort the plane are deeply concerning and require full investigation," the US statement added.

But at the same time some are pointing to some not-so-distant history where US and European allies did essentially the same thing…

Mud-Loving Golden Retriever Finds Her Personal Heaven

When you walk a dog, keeping it on a leash constantly may become boring, yes? However, if you set your doggo free somewhere in the park or in the field be prepared for unexpected consequences.

A video recently shared on YouTube shows Penny, "a crazy 2-year-old Golden Retriever that loves mud and thinks she’s a snake".

She went for a walk with her owner and it took her just a few seconds to get covered in mud.

"She's just enjoying a mud spa," one viewer wrote.

Some people take spa procedures, for example with Dead Sea mud because of its healing effects, so why should a dog refuse a similar opportunity?

National Guard leaves US Capitol grounds after nearly 5-month deployment, Capitol to remain closed to public

Some 2,000 National Guard troops are pulling out of the Capitol grounds nearly five months after the force was deployed there to beef up security after the January 6 riot. The building won’t open to public due to police shortage.

The troops will began their full withdrawal from the Capitol grounds on Sunday, retired Lt. Gen. Russel Honoré, who is leading review of the Capitol security, confirmed to CBS’s Face the Nation in an interview aired on Sunday.

The troops are heading home after the Capitol Police, despite reports of its ranks being severely depleted, did not request the extension of the mission past May 23 deadline, the DC National Guard spokesman told the media earlier this week.

The National Guard already stayed in the nation’s capital two months longer than originally planned. The troops were scheduled to leave the grounds on March 12, but the Capitol Police asked the Pentagon to extend the deployment, drawing criticism from the National Guard Association that blasted the enduring presence of soldiers around the city as “completely inappropriate at best, illegal at worst.”

While at the time Pentagon spokesman John Kirby defended the decision to keep the troops by saying that it would give Capitol Police “some time and space” to prepare to take over the protection of the Capitol, Honoré revealed that the police still won’t be able to ensure public access to the building.

“One of the missions they will not be able to probably accomplish as designated by both houses and old parties, is the open campus,” Honoré said, citing the “strain on the Capitol Police” whose staff numbers dropped down to some 230 officers.

Honoré also called on the Senate to pass the $1.9 billion bill, aimed at strengthening security at the Capitol. Some $700 million in the bill are earmarked to pay the Capitol Police, the DC police and the National Guard, while $200 would be used to establish a ‘quick reaction force’ to support Capitol Police in case of a future emergency.

The bill narrowly passed the House on Thursday. All the Republicans in the House were joined by three Democrats in voting against it, while another three Democrats voted present. While Republicans opposed the legislation, citing its cost and concerns about the Capitol grounds remaining militarized, the dissenting Democrats sounded the alarm about the bill’s possible implications for the people of colour who they claim will be at the receiving end of the domestic terror laws.

While the bill’s fate remains uncertain, Honoré argued that the extra funding is essential to secure the ground. “The longer they think, the less secure the Capitol will be,” he said.
