The flood described by Gilgamesh was a historical documented event. When the seas were rising from the end of the ice age the black sea, which had been mostly dry and inhabited, was flooded by a "horizontal waterfall" of massive quantities of water rushing through the Bosphorous straights. The current was so immense that it actually still exists today flowing into the Black sea, though the actual flow of water is out, into the Mediterranean.
