Arrests down amid rising NYC crime, disturbing data show

Violence surged across the Big Apple last week — with significant upticks in shootings, robberies and serious assaults — as arrests plunged, alarming NYPD statistics revealed Monday.

The crime wave struck both the streets and the subways, with incidents on the transit system more than doubling despite a long-sought increase in police patrols.

The total number of arrests during the week that ended Sunday fell 10.2 percent, from 3,290 to 2,953, compared to the same period last year, official CompStat figures showed.

Gun arrests plummeted 24 percent, from 129 to 98, even as shootings skyrocketed 72 percent, from 25 to 43.

The number of gunfire victims shot up even more, from 27 to 52, for a 92.6 percent increase.

“This will be the story in New York for the foreseeable future: less arrests, more shootings and more victims,” a frustrated Manhattan cop said.

“They could hire 10,000 cops, but it won’t matter unless the politicians change the laws and keep criminals in jail.”

The NYPD recorded double-digit increases in five of the seven categories of major crimes last week.

Robberies were up 44.4 percent, from 205 to 296, and felony assaults rose 35.3 percent, from 357 to 483, according to the latest data.

The smallest spike — 28.6 percent — was in murders, which went from seven to nine.

The worst trends involved thefts, with grand larcenies up 41.8 percent, from 491 to 696, and the number of stolen vehicles virtually doubling from 157 to 234, or 49 percent.

Crimes in the transit system were up a staggering 161.9 percent, from 21 to 55, despite the temporary addition of 250 police patrols by Mayor Bill de Blasio following months of demands by MTA and union officials.

The increase was fueled in part by a series of subway slashings, including that of an ex-con who stunningly told The Post that crime underground “has gotten out of hand.”

“The only thing they can do is basically have more police officers,” said Dimitrios Zias, 44, who served a 1-1/2-to-3-year prison sentence for a 2017 hate-crime attack on two Jewish women he mistook for Muslims.

White House ‘Hopeful’ on W.H.O. Investigation of COVID Origins: Won’t Support a U.S.-Led Probe

The White House said Monday it would rely on the World Health Organization to investigate the origin of the coronavirus, arguing that an investigation led by the United States was not necessary.

“[W]e’re hopeful that WHO can move into a more transparent, independent phase two investigation,” White House press secretary Jen Psaki said during the daily press briefing.

It is unclear why the White House would trust the World Health Organization to conduct the investigation after Psaki criticized the first phase of the investigation in March for lacking crucial data.

The WHO stated in their March report that the lab leak origin scenario was “extremely unlikely” and said the most likely origin was the transmission of the coronavirus from bats to humans.

At the time, Psaki criticized the report for lacking crucial data.

“The report lacks crucial data, information, and access,” Psaki said in March. “It represents a partial and incomplete picture.”

When asked whether the Biden administration supported an investigation led by the United States into the origin of the virus, Psaki argued it was not necessary.

“I think you’re misunderstanding how this process actually works,” she told Fox News reporter Peter Doocy, adding that the world needed China to cooperate with the international WHO investigation.

“I have to say I think the family members of the loved ones whose lives have been lost and deserve accurate information, data, not the jumping to a conclusion without having the information necessary to conclude what the origins are,” she said.

The White House did not respond to a follow-up question from Breitbart News about supporting or opposing an investigation led by the United States into the origin of the virus.

Rick Santorum out at CNN after backlash over comments about Native Americans

Far-left network CNN announced over the weekend that it has "parted ways" with conservative contributor Rick Santorum, following uproar over comments he made about Native Americans in a recent speech.

HuffPost was first to report Saturday that CNN "terminated" its contract with Santorum, a former Republican senator, amid calls to fire him over comments he made during a speech for Young America's Foundation.

"If you think of other countries like Italy, Greece and China, and Turkey and places like that, they've all sort of changed over time, I mean, they've been there for millennia, in many cases, and their culture has sort of evolved over time," Santorum told the audience.

"But not us! We came here, and created a blank slate, we birthed a nation, from nothing," he continued. "I mean, there was nothing here. I mean, yes we have Native Americans but candidly there isn't much Native American culture in American culture."

The remarks drew furious condemnation online — including from one of his CNN colleagues who called him a "white supremacist."

Santorum responded to the initial backlash with a brief statement, saying, "I had no intention of minimizing or in any way devaluing Native American culture."

The senior political commentator was then confronted about his comments during an appearance on "Cuomo Prime Time," where he told host Chris Cuomo that he "misspoke," explaining, "I was talking about the founding, and the principles embodied embodied in the founding."

"I would never, and you know, people have said, 'Oh, I'm trying to dismiss what we did to the Native Americans,'" Santorum continued. "Far from it! The way we treated Native Americans was horrific. It goes against every bone and everything I've ever fought for, as a leader, in the Congress."

One CNN executive told HuffPost that Santorum's response on Cuomo's show was the nail in the coffin for ending his tenure with the liberal network.

"Leadership wasn't particularly satisfied with that appearance," the executive told the outlet. "None of the anchors wanted to book him, so he was essentially benched anyway."
