But often lost in this discussion is that there were labor camps, and there were cremation camps. In labor camps the prisoners were just worked to death, or died from disease, etc., as your grandfather indicated. But I'm not sure if it matters HOW they died, they still died. When I visited Mauthausen, they also said that many prisoners were executed while en-route to the camps, and never recorded in the statistics. If they were deemed 'non-useful' or something like that.
