Missing fisherman found alive after 17 nights in the Oregon wilderness

A missing fisherman has been found alive after spending 17 nights in the Oregon wilderness, according to police.

Harry Burleigh, from Roseburg, Oregon, was reported missing the evening of May 7 by his wife, Stacy, after he failed to return home from a camping trip in the Toketee area. Burleigh, 69, was originally due to arrive home the day before, according to a May 9 news release from the Douglas County Sheriff's Office.

Douglas County Search and Rescue found Burleigh's vehicle near a lower trailhead that leads into Twin Lakes on May 8 and determined the fisherman may have tried to walk to Twin Lakes to fish before heading home, according to a previous news release.

The trail is in the Umpqua National Forest, which is nestled on the western slopes of the Cascade Mountains, according to the National Park Service.

Search teams have been looking for the man since then and even left packages of food on the trails in hopes he would find them. His wife, Stacy, shared updates on the search efforts in a community Facebook group, stating at times there were 40 volunteers from eight counties participating in the mission.

Searchers scoured the area for days for any sign of Burleigh and had come up empty-handed, according to police. On May 16, they had a big break when searchers found a tackle box and makeshift shelter belonging to Burleigh. But they did not find the missing fisherman.

"They left him a note and lighter and told him to make a fire and they would be back in to get him tomorrow," Stacey wrote on Facebook. "It took the team another 6 hours to get out."

A week later, on Sunday, rescuers discovered a second makeshift shelter southwest of the original one, and after calling out for Burleigh, they heard him reply, according to the news release.

"He was found to be walking and complaining of minor pain, but was in stable condition," Sunday's news release said. "A Brim Aviation helicopter was utilized to hoist Burleigh from his location and transport him to a waiting Lifeflight helicopter."

Burleigh was evaluated at the hospital and reunited with his family Sunday evening, according to the news release.

"This was the outcome we all have been looking for in this case," said Douglas County Sheriff's Sgt. Brad O'Dell. "The Sheriff's Office wants to thank everyone who was involved in this mission."

At least 18 entities assisted in the recovery of Burleigh, according to the news release.

Union County E911 is receiving multiple 911 calls for “alarms” in the neighborhood. More than likely these “alarms” are not alarms at all but a bug, Brood X. This brood of cicadas emerges every 17 years and is endemic in most of the eastern United States. They also have a range of different sounds they can produce, making them some of the loudest of all insects. It is often difficult to pinpoint where the sound is coming from and can sound like a vehicle or home alarm system. Their song can be loud enough to cause hearing loss as they can produce sounds up to 120 db. They feed on sap and do not have a major impact on agriculture but may overwhelm small plants. They cannot sting or bite but may mistake you for a tree branch. So, if you think you hear an alarm ensure that it is an alarm and determine the location before contacting authorities.

Body of missing man found inside dinosaur statue in Spain

The body of a missing man was found inside of a papier-mache dinosaur statue in a Spanish suburb.

Police were alerted to the corpse on Sunday after a father and son in the Santa Coloma de Gramenet neighborhood detected a foul smell and the father saw what appeared to be a human leg jutting through a crack in the sculpture of a stegosaurus, according to local media reports.

Firefighters were called to the scene, and they cut open a leg of the statue to remove the body.

The body was determined to be that of a 39-year-old man who had been reported missing by his family hours earlier. Police do not suspect foul play, according to BBC News. The report noted that local media outlets said the man, who has not been publicly identified, appeared to have dropped his cellphone inside the giant statue and fell inside of it while attempting to retrieve it, unable to climb out or call for help.

However, police have not said how they suspect the man died, and an autopsy is being conducted to confirm the cause of the death, according to the Latin Times.

The statue was being used by a former movie theater for advertising purposes. It is now removed from the public square.

Body of missing man found in Spanish dinosaur statue

Spanish police are investigating the death of a 39-year-old man whose body was found inside a dinosaur statue.

Authorities were alerted on Saturday after a father and his son noticed a smell emanating from the papier-mâché figure in Santa Coloma de Gramenet, a suburb of Barcelona.

The father then saw the corpse through a crack in the Stegosaurus' hollow leg.

Police said the man had been reported missing by his family, and no foul play is suspected.

Three fire brigade teams were called to scene after the body was discovered, and firefighters cut open the dinosaur leg to retrieve it.

Local media report the man - who has not been named - was trying to retrieve a mobile phone he dropped inside the statue. He then fell inside the decorative figure and was left trapped upside down, unable to call for help.

Police have not confirmed how the man ended up inside the dinosaur, and are awaiting the results of his autopsy to find out how he died.

The decorative statue has been removed from its place outside the city's Cubic Building, where it had been used to advertise an old cinema.
