John Lennon Was Killed by Stephen King (Yes, That Stephen King)

This one is among the most enjoyably ridiculous pop culture conspiracy theories ever, as it’s seemingly impossible to argue that Mark David Chapman — who’s clearly not anyone else — wasn’t the one who shot John Lennon on Dec. 8, 1980. Yet, Californian Steve Lightfoot took charge during a 2009 Sarasota City town council meeting to announce that the real culprit was none other than author Stephen King (whom everyone else mistook for Chapman).

Furthermore, he purports that the FBI, Ronald Reagan and Richard Nixon sanctioned the murder because they didn’t like Lennon’s anti-war cause. There were even “government codes” in magazines and newspapers to prove it. Lightfoot was so convinced of his epiphany that he painted a message on his van — “It’s true or he’d sue” — to antagonize King further. To be fair, Chapman and King looked a lot alike back then, so . . . maybe? Nah.

Steve and Dave King spent a lot of their childhood reading books, and one day, that sent them to the attic in search of new tomes to pore over. Up in that dusty room, a young Stephen King discovered one of his father’s old books: A collection of H.P. Lovecraft’s horror stories. That book would change him forever. As he’d later put it: “I knew that I’d found home when I read that book.”

The Master of Horror was born that day.
