Former Sen. John Warner of Virginia dies at age 94

Former Sen. John W. Warner III, a titan of Virginia politics who served five terms, died Tuesday evening in Alexandria.

He was 94.

A veteran of World War II and the Korean War, Mr. Warner served in the Senate from 1979 to 2009 after a brief period as Navy secretary. He rose to chairman of the Senate Armed Forces Committee.

Sen. Tim Kaine, Virginia Democrat, paid tribute to the former senator.

“I am stunned at the loss of John Warner. Virginia has lost an unmatched leader, and my family has lost a dear friend,” he said. “John and I once talked about how the Senate of today was more partisan and less relationship-based than during his years of service. But at the end of our conversation, he told me: ‘But Tim, it’s not in the water supply or sick building syndrome. It’s in the character and priorities of the people who walk into the building every day. So you have a chance to walk into the Capitol and make it better each day.’”

RELEASE THE TAPES! — Rep. Devin Nunes Says Democrats Won’t Release Tapes from Jan. 6 US Capitol Assault – Why Is That? (VIDEO)

By Jim Hoft

Published May 26, 2021 at 7:25am

Devin Nunes told Greg Kelly it was ridiculous and that the Democrats will not release video tapes to the Republican lawmakers from January 6th inside the US Capitol.

Maybe because the so-called “insurrection” footage mostly looks sort of like this VIDEO…

Rep. Devin Nunes: Tell me how many people actually carried a hammer, broke windows, or aided and abetted those people that destroyed federal property? Why won’t you show us the videotapes? Republicans have yet to see the videotapes of what happened on January 6. Why are they not showing us the videotapes and why don’t we know who broke the windows and damaged public property? Because I tell you, I am all for those people who broke windows to going to jail for a long time. But what I’m not for is for people sitting in jail, like I understand, there is very few people reporting on this right now, but what I understand there are people who are sitting in jail right now who are having their due process rights violated. I talked to a lot of people who said, “Hey, we didn’t even know we couldn’t be in the Capitol.”

Donald Trump Ally Mike Lindell Blocked From Attending Republican Governors’ Event

MyPillow CEO Mike Lindell has been a warrior for Donald Trump and for the Republicans, but sometimes that friendship is not reciprocated, as was the case this week.

Leave it to some spineless Republicans (and this is why we are losing the culture war) to give Lindell the cold shoulder.

On Tuesday, Lindell went to The Republican Governors Association of Tennessee’s spring conference and was unceremoniously kicked out of the event, Politico reported.

Lindell said he had flown to Nashville on Monday to attend the three-day meeting starting on Tuesday, but that only a few minutes after he collected his credential at the JW Marriott Hotel, an event coordinator in the lobby told him he was not allowed at any of the official RGA events.

An RGA official, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, said on Tuesday night that Lindell tried to join transportation for members only for a dinner at the Tennessee Governor’s Mansion and was denied. The person added: “These events are for RGA members, and Mike Lindell is not currently an RGA member.”

Lindell rose to political fame in the last year as he became a top ally of then-President Donald Trump, even speaking at a White House event in the early weeks of the pandemic. Trump called him a friend during that Rose Garden press briefing. After the 2020 election, Lindell became one of the most prominent people touting Trump’s falsehoods about a stolen election, and he hosted a feature-length documentary on the One America News Network about the subject.

Lindell on Tuesday shared a screenshot of a calendar event headlined “RGA – Nashville Meeting” with the attachment “Nashville Agenda.pdf,” and said he had been invited to the event in the last month or two. He also shared the schedule of RGA events for Tuesday and Wednesday that had the word “CONFIDENTIAL” at the bottom.

But things may have changed after Lindell went on Steve Bannon’s radio show and promised to confront Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp and Arizona Gov. Doug Ducey and RGA’s chair about allegations of election fraud that he believes occurred in their states.

They must have not wanted to hear it and want to put the 2020 presidential election behind them so they can continue to be the spineless cowards they are.

And they are not the only people who want to silence Lindell. Earlier this month his Vimeo account was removed because he would not fall in line.

Amazon buys MGM for $8.45 billion

34

The e-commerce giant’s biggest entertainment acquisition yet

By Jon Porter@JonPorty May 26, 2021, 8:41am EDT

Amazon has reached a deal to acquire the film and TV company MGM for $8.45 billion, the companies announced today. It’s a significant acquisition for the e-commerce giant, and it means it will own a library of content that’s reported to consist of around 4,000 films and 17,000 hours of TV. The acquisition is likely to help Amazon attract even more big-spending Prime subscribers as its Prime Video service competes with the likes of Netflix and Disney Plus.

MGM is perhaps most notable for being the Hollywood studio behind the James Bond and Rocky franchises, but its library runs the gamut from classic films like 12 Angry Men to modern TV shows like The Handmaid’s Tale and Vikings. MGM’s library also includes unscripted TV shows like The Voice and Shark Tank. Amazon says the acquisition will “provide customers with greater access” to MGM’s works and “empower” the studio to continue its “great storytelling.”

“The real financial value behind this deal is the treasure trove of IP in the deep catalog that we plan to reimagine and develop together with MGM’s talented team,” Mike Hopkins, senior vice president of Prime Video and Amazon Studios, said in a statement. “It’s very exciting and provides so many opportunities for high-quality storytelling.”

Amazon’s media business has so far been a relatively small part of its overall empire, although it still spends billions on content each year. A substantial portion of Prime subscribers make use of the included free Prime Video streaming. Of the 200 million-plus people worldwide who are currently subscribed to Amazon Prime, over 175 million streamed video last year. Adding thousands more films and TV shows could be a boon for both figures.

Reports of Amazon’s possible acquisition of MGM first emerged in mid-May. Variety reported that the deal was being negotiated by Hopkins. The Wall Street Journal reported on May 24th that Amazon was nearing a deal to buy MGM.

MGM is currently owned by a collection of private equity firms, including Anchorage Capital Group, Highland Capital Management, and Solus Alternative Asset Management. Reports that MGM was up for sale emerged last December.

The sale of MGM comes during a period of Hollywood consolidation, as companies attempt to beef up their content libraries to compete with Netflix and Disney. AT&T recently spun out its media business WarnerMedia to merge it with TV company Discovery, creating the world’s second largest media firm by revenue outside of Disney. Both companies have their own streaming services (HBO Max and Discovery Plus), raising the possibility of them being combined into a single, more substantial service.
