On Tuesday, Attorney General Mark Brnovich filed a Motion to Intervene with the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals on behalf of the State of Arizona in the Democratic National Committee lawsuit challenging Arizona’s ban on ballot harvesting and statutes regulating out-of-precinct voting. Attorney General Brnovich is moving to intervene on this matter on behalf of the State because defendant Secretary of State Hobbs has announced that she does not support an appeal.

As noted in today’s filing, Attorney General Brnovich moves to intervene in this matter, assuring the State’s interest in retaining its “broad authority to structure and regulate elections,” is fully preserved and that there is no possible procedural hindrance to Supreme Court review of the matter. The Attorney General is empowered by Arizona law to seek intervention in federal court on behalf of the State.

Earlier this month the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals granted Brnovich’s motion to stay the Court’s mandate in the DNC v. Hobbs case. The stay ensures Arizona’s ban on ballot harvesting and the law regarding out-of-precinct voting will remain in place until the U.S. Supreme Court has a chance to hear the appeal of the case.

Before the 2016 election, the U.S. Supreme Court stayed the Ninth Circuit’s election-eve injunction against the enforcement of Arizona’s prohibition on ballot harvesting and out-of-precinct voting following a lawsuit filed by the Democratic National Committee, the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee, and the Arizona Democratic Party. The State then prevailed at trial.

We Just Got Proof that Americans, Not China, Are Paying for the Tariffs

President Trump famously (and falsely) said that “trade wars are good and easy to win.” But we now have confirmation that, just as economic theory predicted, American taxpayers are the biggest losers from the former president’s tariffs. (Which have largely been continued by President Biden so far.)

As reported by Reason’s Eric Boehm, a new analysis from Moody’s Analytics finds that only about 8 percent of the tariffs’ costs have fallen on China. In contrast, US consumers have suffered a whopping 92 percent of the costs.

This finding is by no means an outlier. Similar research found that the economic costs of Trump’s trade barriers “have been passed on entirely to U.S. importers and consumers.”

And the outlook will only get worse if the tariffs are not rolled back soon. “If the tariffs remain in place, pressure on US retailers will likely rise, leading to a greater pass-through to consumer prices,” Moody’s warns.

“More than three years after Trump launched his trade war and four months after President Joe Biden inherited it, the consequences of the tariffs should no longer be subject to debate,” Boehm writes. “The evidence is overwhelming and one-sided: American consumers are being hammered.”

“With consumer prices already rising due to a combination of inflation and a possibly overheating economy as the COVID-19 pandemic fades, Biden could easily offer a bit of relief by cutting the tariffs his predecessor imposed,” he concludes. “Continuing to fight a losing trade war is both a choice and a mistake.”

Brazil Arrests One of Italy’s Most Wanted Mafia Bosses

Brazil’s Federal Police arrested on Monday one of Italy’s most-wanted mobsters, putting an end to a years-long international chase after Rocco Morabito, a prominent member of one of the world’s most powerful crime syndicates, the ‘Ndrangheta.

After having been on the run for 22 years and escaping jail in 2019, Brazilian agents arrested Morabito, 54, in a hotel in the northeastern city of João Pessoa. The member of the Morabito clan, one of the many families within the 'Ndrangheta mafia, was sentenced in Italy to 30 year years in prison.

Authorities also apprehended another Italian citizen identified as Vincenzo Pasquino who, like Morabito, will face extradition.

The ‘Ndrangheta clan chief has allegedly trafficked drugs from Brazil to Europe since the 90s, according to police investigations. Officials also said that recent operations revealed the syndicate’s links to Brazilian criminal groups.

Morabito was first arrested in Uruguay in 2017 but two years later managed to break out of a prison in Montevideo in a spectacular escape that occurred just before he was about to be extradited to Italy. An investigation later found that another ‘Ndrangheta member bribed guards with 50,000 euros (US$61,000).

Originally from Africo, a small town in the southern region of Calabria, the Morabito family became one of the most powerful clans involved in international drugs and weapons trafficking in the 90s.

Giuseppe Morabito, nicknamed U’Tiradrittu (“The straight shooter"), is the historical boss of the family clan known for taking over the drug business in Milan and other northern areas of Italy and Europe.

Rocco Morabito, a cousin of U’Tiradrittu, has been often referred to as ‘Milan’s cocaine king’ for heading the clan's coke imports from Latin America to Europe.

After Milan, Morabito reportedly settled in Fortaleza, Brazil, before he moved to Uruguay, where he lived in a luxurious villa and used a fake identity for at least a decade before his first arrest. After escaping, he relocated to Brazil.

Italian authorities celebrated the apprehension of Morabito and applauded the Cooperation Against ‘Ndrangheta (I-CAN) project, a three-year initiative promoted and financed by the Ministry of the Interior and led by Interpol that targeted the syndicate and its illegal interests.

"Once again, the determination, dedication and professionalism of all the investigators involved have made it possible to bring to justice, after two years of complex and detailed investigations, the leading exponent of the 'Ndrangheta - considered the second most dangerous fugitive after Matteo Messina Denaro,” said Italy’s Minister of the Interior, Luciana Lamorgese.

CBP Officers at Hidalgo Snatch Fugitive Wanted on Child Sexual Assault Charges, Four Other Fugitives Caught

HIDALGO, Texas—U.S. Customs and Border Protection, Office of Field Operations (OFO) at the Hidalgo International Bridge apprehended Andres Elizondo, a male United States citizen from Alamo, Texas who had multiple arrest warrants associated to child-related sex crimes.

“CBP Field Operations is always ready to assist our law enforcement partners in locating those wanted persons with outstanding warrants, especially those allegedly involved in heinous crimes of a sexual nature with children,” said Port Director Carlos Rodriguez, Port of Hidalgo/Pharr/ Anzalduas.

On May 21, 2021, the 50-year-old man arrived from Mexico as a pedestrian at the Hidalgo-Reynosa International Bridge and a CBP officer immediately secured him after discovering Elizondo was a possible match to an arrest warrant. Once in secondary, biometric verification confirmed his identity along with the active arrest warrants from the Hidalgo County Sheriff’s Office. Elizondo was charged in October 2020 for alleged sex crimes occurring earlier that year involving an eight-year-old female child; child fondling and indecency/child sexual contact, both second-degree felonies.

A Hidalgo County Sheriff’s Office deputy arrived to take custody of Elizondo and transported him to the county jail.

This was a busy weekend for CBP officers at Hidalgo as four other persons with arrest warrants ranging from resisting arrest, drug-related, probation violations and failure to appear charges were also detected.

Criminal charges are merely allegations. Defendants are presumed innocent unless proven guilty in a court of law.

Mandatory vaccination against COVID-19 should not be introduced, Putin says

During the video conference on the economy, he noted that there are different opinions on this topic, including on introducing a mandatory vaccination for the entire population or for workers in certain sectors who come into contact with a large number of people due to their occupation, for example, those working in the retail industry, catering, transportation, medical, educational, social institutions and so on.

"In my opinion, it is counterproductive and unnecessary to introduce mandatory vaccinations," the head of state said.

According to him, "people should realize this necessity on their own" and comprehend that without a shot they "may face a very serious and even deadly danger," particularly elderly people.

Putin is confident in the reliability and safety of the Russian coronavirus vaccines and believes that the country has created all the conditions for vaccination.

"I would like to emphasize once again and to appeal to all our citizens: think carefully, keep in mind that the Russian vaccine - the practice has already shown that millions [of people] have used it - is currently the most reliable and the safest," Putin said at a meeting on economic issues.

What we know about grand jury in Trump probe

The news that Manhattan’s district attorney has convened a special grand jury as part of his criminal probe of Donald Trump’s business dealings has fueled speculation over whether Trump could become the first U.S. president to serve prison time.

Legal experts said the development indicates that Manhattan District Attorney Cy Vance Jr. is moving closer to pursuing criminal charges of some kind. But with so much still unknown, they cautioned against reading too much into what Vance’s move might ultimately mean for the former president.

“By empaneling the special grand jury, Vance has indicated he found significant evidence of one or more crimes by one or more people and is preparing to present evidence to secure indictments,” said attorney and legal analyst Bradley Moss.

“Whether he will ultimately obtain those indictments, and against whom within the Trump Organization, remains to be seen,” Moss added. “People leaping to the conclusion that this means former President Trump is headed for jail any time soon need to slow their roll.”

Vance’s wide-ranging inquiry is reportedly interested in hush-money payments to Trump’s alleged mistresses, questionable valuations of Trump Organization assets and employee compensation arrangements that may have skirted taxes.

It’s unclear which if any of these investigative dimensions might have triggered Vance’s decision to convene a special grand jury, though experts said such panels are typically formed in order to drill more deeply into complex legal matters.

“Special grand juries are typically empaneled for longer periods of time and meet more regularly than a normal grand jury, and they do so because special grand juries primarily are empaneled for complex cases,” Moss said.

The panel that Vance has convened will gather three days a week for six months, according to the Washington Post, which was first to report the new development.

Broadly speaking, grand juries serve as both a prosecutor’s investigative tool and as a gatekeeper for determining whether to issue formal accusations of criminal wrongdoing in the form of indictments.

Vance's office has reportedly subpoenaed the school for tuition payment records, as well as records from Weisselberg’s bank.

Biden State Department quietly ended team's work probing COVID origin

Investigation was examining if virus stemmed from leak from Wuhan Institute of Virology

The Biden State Department ended an inquiry into the origins of the COVID-19 pandemic that was investigating whether the virus stemmed from a leak out of the Wuhan Institute of Virology, Fox News has confirmed.

The Biden administration terminated the inquiry – which was being led out of the State Department’s arms control and verification bureau and initially launched at the request of former Trump Secretary of State Mike Pompeo – after being briefed on the team's initial findings in February and March.

State Department spokesman Ned Price on Tuesday denied shutting down the inquiry: "There has been incorrect reporting that the Biden-Harris administration shut down an investigation by the State Department’s Bureau of Arms Control and Verification (AVC) into the origins of the COVID-19 pandemic." He said the team's work ended after delivering a report in February and March, adding that "all relevant parts of the Department continue to work with the interagency on this matter."

"The world continues to have serious questions about the earliest days of the COVID-19 pandemic, including its origins within the Peoples Republic of China," Price continued. "China’s position that their part in this investigation is complete is disappointing and at odds with the rest of the international community that is working collaboratively across the board to bring an end to this pandemic and improve global health security."

"The lab origin theory is very possible and China must be held to account," former Assistant Secretary of State for International Security and Non-Proliferation Chris Ford told Fox News on Wednesday. Ford said he found out this past December about the AVC investigation, which had been kept secret from him and bypassed department and intelligence community biological experts. He said the team had been told not to share its work with him or the intelligence community. "I had procedural concerns and structural concerns," he went on.

A State Department official earlier told Fox News that Secretary of State Antony Blinken did not disband any cell looking into the origins of COVID-19, and that the department only employed a single contractor who was conducting research on several topics – including coronavirus. That contractor, according to the official, left the State Department before Blinken’s confirmation. The official said the inquiry was closed amid concerns about methodology.

The Biden administration’s investigation into the origins of the coronavirus pandemic is currently being led out of the White House National Security Council.

Fox News has learned that David Asher was the contractor leading the investigation. Asher has a history of investigative work tracking money for the AQ Khan network, North Korea's nuclear program, and top Al Qaeda leaders, but has fallen under scrutiny from former State Department officials. In a statement to Fox News, Asher defended the investigation, and said that, at the time, some State Department colleagues "were deliberately playing down possible links to China’s biological weapons program."

"It is U.S. law to engage in effective arms control and nonproliferation, not facilitate it via ‘scientific cooperation’ in the name of threat reduction or refusal to engage in effective compliance with Communist countries that openly aim to incorporate synthetic biology into the future of warfare (apparently with our naive material and scientific assistance)," Asher said.

"We don’t know for certain what happened in Wuhan but we had every reason to investigate and ask questions," Asher continued. "As the State Department's Jan. 15 statement said – and as additional disclosures and expert analyses of the last few months have underscored – there is probable cause for deep suspicion."

Illinois Dem Offered Activist Taxpayer-Funded Job in Alleged Bid to Clear Primary Field, Court Docs Show

Marie Newman's agreement with potential opponent may have violated federal law

Democratic congresswoman Marie Newman (Ill.) promised a six-figure, taxpayer-funded job to a local activist that he says was a bribe to keep him out of a tight primary race—an apparent violation of federal law.

Columbia College Chicago adjunct professor and Palestinian activist Iymen Chehade sued Newman in January for breach of contract. Included in the lawsuit is a December 2018 agreement signed by Newman that promised Chehade a senior role in the Democrat's congressional office should she be elected. According to the complaint, which was first reported by CBS Chicago and obtained by the Washington Free Beacon, Newman offered the contract "in an effort to induce Chehade not to run against her in the primary."

Newman has not disputed the authenticity of her contract with Chehade—a campaign spokesperson instead shared a statement with the Washington Free Beacon arguing the activist did not receive the job because he "misrepresented his qualifications" and "was ill-suited for a senior role in a congressional office." The spokesperson also called Chehade's claims "fictitious and frankly ludicrous."

The contract could spell serious trouble for Newman, a progressive media darling who narrowly defeated pro-life Democrat Dan Lipinski in the March 2020 primary. Federal law prohibits congressional candidates from offering employment for political purposes. Should Chehade's allegation prove true, Newman's proposition would "absolutely" violate the statute, Foundation for Accountability and Civic Trust executive director Kendra Arnold told the Free Beacon.

According to the contract, Newman agreed to employ Chehade as both chief foreign policy adviser and either district director or legislative director. The role would have paid Chehade between $135,000 and $140,000 and did not require him to "maintain specific hours at the office," the agreement states. Newman also promised Chehade "complete discretion about the selection and employment termination of staff members under his supervision" and pledged to "use her best efforts to provide Chehade a private office within the congressional suite."

Chehade's involvement in the primary would have likely siphoned votes away from Newman, who defeated Lipinski by fewer than 3 points. Illinois's Third Congressional District holds the largest concentration of Arab Americans in the state and is home to American Muslims for Palestine (AMP), a prominent anti-Israel advocacy group and leading promoter of the Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions movement. Chehade also backs BDS and spoke at an AMP-sponsored event in 2012.

Chehade went on to assist Newman's campaign after accepting the agreement and declining to enter the primary, the lawsuit states. According to the complaint, Chehade served as an "informal" adviser to Newman prior to the primary and "helped her craft her campaign statement on Israel/Palestine." That statement included Newman's support for "the First Amendment right to pursue the boycott, divestment, and sanctions campaign" and opposition to "any federal, state, or local legislation" criminalizing the BDS movement.

Newman's taxpayer-funded congressional lawyers are seeking to dismiss the lawsuit by claiming that the Democrat "did not have authority to enter into such an agreement." They also argue that the case should be tossed because government officials are immune to most lawsuits.

"Congresswoman Newman could not breach the contract in her individual capacity because she could only hire Mr. Chehade to work in the Congressional office in her official capacity," Newman's motion to dismiss states.

Newman received endorsements from Congress's top progressives, including Sens. Elizabeth Warren (D., Mass.), Bernie Sanders (I., Vt.), and Cory Booker (D., N.J.), as well as "Squad" members Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D., N.Y.) and Ayanna Pressley (D., Mass.).

U.S. Wastes Billions on Fragmented, Duplicative, Overlapping Government Programs

U.S. government agencies could save American taxpayers billions of dollars by reducing or eliminating fragmentation, overlap and duplication identified in a federal audit made public this month. The question is whether the various publicly funded entities will bother to take action to mitigate the waste. For nearly a decade the investigative arm of Congress, the Government Accountability Office (GAO), has documented more than 1,100 cases of fragmented, overlapping, or duplicative federal programs in areas ranging from healthcare to defense, the production of U.S. currency and disaster response. Only around half of the GAO’s recommendations to curb waste have been fully implemented in the past nine years, resulting in “hundreds of billions of dollars in financial benefits,” according to U.S. Comptroller General Gene L. Dodaro. Imagine the savings if more agencies did their job correctly.

Fragmentation refers to circumstances in which more than one federal agency is involved in the same broad area of national need and service delivery can be improved. Overlap occurs when multiple agencies or programs have similar goals, engage in similar activities or strategies to achieve them, or target similar beneficiaries. Duplication exists when two or more agencies or programs are engaged in the same activities or provide the same services to the same beneficiaries. The list of agencies that fragment, overlap or duplicate goes on and on with practically every key federal agency appearing as an offender over the years. Among them are the departments of Veterans Affairs (VA), Labor (DOL), Homeland Security (DHS), State, Agriculture (USDA) and Commerce as well as the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

Only 57% of the more than 1,100 actions recommended by the GAO to reduce costs, increase revenues and improve agencies’ operating effectiveness have been implemented since the annual probes began in 2011. It resulted in approximately $429 billion in financial benefits, including $393 billion that accrued through 2019 and $36 billion that was projected to accrue in future years. As examples congressional investigators offer the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) Medicaid spending limits resulting in a whopping $30 billion in savings in 2019. “GAO estimates that tens of billions of additional dollars could be saved should Congress and executive branch agencies fully address open actions, including those that have potential financial benefits of $1 billion or more,” the report states.

Dems Hosted Ex-Black Panther Implicated in Torture for Event Where Panelists Praised Cop Killers

Black Panthers accused of torture compared their movement to Black Lives Matter

Three Democratic lawmakers hosted a forum earlier this month where several convicted cop killers were hailed as political prisoners. The event featured a former Black Panther implicated in the torture of a member suspected of being a police informant.

Speakers at the May 10 forum, hosted by Reps. Steve Cohen (D., Tenn.), Bobby Rush (D., Ill.), and Barbara Lee (D., Calif.), praised Mumia Abu-Jamal, Mutulu Shakur, H. Rap Brown, and other black liberationists who are all serving life sentences for killing police officers. The topic of the event was COINTELPRO, the FBI program that tracked black separatist groups in the 1960s and 1970s.

The defense of the cop killers comes as Democratic leaders are trying to downplay the perception that the party is anti-police. Some congressional Democrats have supported defunding police departments in the wake of high-profile deaths of minorities during interactions with police. Kristen Clarke, who was confirmed this week to lead the Justice Department’s civil rights division, penned an essay last year in which she supported defunding the police. She also moderated a conference in 1999 where Abu-Jamal and other cop killers were touted as political prisoners.

Lee introduced perhaps the most controversial speaker at the event, former Black Panther leader Ericka Huggins. Lee, who worked closely with the Black Panthers as an Oakland community activist in the 1970s, referred to Huggins as her "former colleague and comrade."

Huggins and another forum speaker, Black Panther Party cofounder Bobby Seale, were charged in 1970 with the murder of Alex Rackley, a party member suspected of snitching to the police. Rackley was tortured on May 18, 1969, at a Black Panther hideout in New Haven, Conn. He was fatally shot and dumped in a river two days later. Huggins and Seale were accused of ordering the hit on Rackley, who was 19 years old.

While the case was dropped against Huggins and Seale after a jury failed to reach a verdict, a tape recording introduced at their trial revealed that Huggins was present while Rackley was being tortured. Black Panthers beat Rackley with sticks and poured boiling water over him to force him to confess that he was a police informant, according to contemporaneous news reports of the trial.

The Washington Post reported in a 1977 retrospective of the case that Huggins admitted to boiling the water poured on Rackley, verbally abusing him and kicking him while he sat tied to a chair.

Huggins’s lawyer claimed at her trial that she was pressured into taking part in the interrogation and that she played no role in his death.

Lee and her Democratic colleagues did not mention Rackley’s murder at the hands of Black Panthers. But Lee hailed Huggins as an example of the strength of leadership of women in the Black Panther Party. She said it was "mind-boggling" to her that Black Panthers were harassed, assaulted, and killed by police.

Huggins, who did not respond to the Washington Free Beacon’s request for comment, told the Guardian in 2015 that she stayed with the party for another decade after the Rackley murder because she was "committed to the party, not to orchestrations of the FBI." Huggins, who refers to herself as a "former political prisoner" on her personal website, has forged a career in academia since leaving the Panthers.

Huggins did not discuss the Rackley affair during her remarks at the forum. She instead criticized unspecified "forces" that she said are spreading disinformation about the Black Lives Matter movement. She said that, like modern-day activists, the Black Panthers’ goal was "to help create a just and equitable world."

The Democrats also did not rebuff two other speakers who claimed that a group of black liberation activists convicted of killing police officers were political prisoners.

One speaker, Akua Njeri, called for the release of Abu-Jamal and Brown, referring to them as "political prisoners, prisoners of war, prisoners of consciousness." Nkechi Taifa, a civil rights activist, lamented that the cop killers had not received parole even though they are all in their 70s and 80s.

Abu-Jamal, a former Black Panther, was sentenced to death for the 1981 murder of Philadelphia police officer Daniel Faulkner. He has become a martyr of sorts for left-wing activists, who claim he was given an unfair trial.

Fauci: 'I don't have enough insight' into CCP to know if coronavirus science has been compromised

Longtime federal health expert has sent hundreds of thousands of dollars to Wuhan lab.

White House coronavirus adviser and infectious disease expert Anthony Fauci on Wednesday admitted that he lacks enough knowledge of the Chinese Communist Party to know if the one-party communist rulers in China might hold undue sway over the country's scientists.

Fauci made the remarks during an exchange with Louisiana Sen. John Kennedy at a Senate Appropriations subcommittee hearing. The health expert, who has directed the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases for decades, has in recent weeks faced growing scrutiny over the NIAID's potential role in the funding of dangerous coronavirus experiments at the Wuhan Institute of Virology, located just a few miles from the first confirmed outbreak of COVID-19.

During his exchange with Kennedy, Fauci stated that funding from the NIAID was not used by Chinese scientists to conduct risky "gain-of-function" research at the WIV. Asked by Kennedy how he was certain the funding hadn't been surreptitiously used to fund those experiments, Fauci admitted that "there's no way of guaranteeing that," but he stated he nevertheless felt confident in the integrity of the grantees.

"You think all the scientists [in China] have told the truth in terms of the origin of the Wuhan virus," Kennedy asked, "[and] have not been influenced by the Communist Party of China?"

"I don't have enough insight into the Communist Party in China to know the interactions between them and the scientists," Fauci admitted.

Famously secretive, the CCP has been accused of covering up the extent of the earliest outbreaks of the virus in an attempt to head off international criticism on the origins of the pandemic.

The Wuhan Institute of Virology is grouped under the country's Chinese Academy of Sciences, which is itself overseen by the Chinese central government's State Committee.

Atlantic Council Scholars Made Millions Lobbying for Putin-Backed Pipeline

Conflicts of interest abound at historically hawkish think tank

Two scholars at the Atlantic Council, the prominent foreign policy think tank that claims to staunchly oppose Russian influence, have raked in nearly $3 million lobbying in favor of a Russian pipeline that American officials worry will allow Vladimir Putin to increase his influence in Europe.

Since 2017, Richard Burt, an Atlantic Council board member, and Frances Burwell, a distinguished fellow, have lobbied for five European companies financing the Nord Stream 2 pipeline, which will transport gas from Russia to Germany. In addition to their perches at the Atlantic Council, Burt and Burwell are partners at McLarty Inbound, a consulting group that lobbies for foreign companies.

Burt and Burwell have used their positions at the Atlantic Council to further their work at McLarty. Burt has defended the pipeline at public Atlantic Council events and reportedly pitched it in private discussions with colleagues at the think tank. Burwell defended Nord Stream in at least one major media interview where she was introduced as an Atlantic Council fellow, though not as a McLarty lobbyist.

The conflict of interest highlights the complexity of competing interests at the Atlantic Council, which gives its experts and board members wide berth and which employs several former ambassadors vigorously opposed to the pipeline. It raises the question of whether the Atlantic Council, founded in 1961 to strengthen NATO and the Atlantic alliance, promotes a set of core beliefs any longer or has devolved into a free-for-all of competing views.

Burt did not respond to a request for comment. Burwell said that the Atlantic Council as an institution does not take positions on policy issues, and that "its many fellows/researchers take diverse points of view."

While Nord Stream 2 AG is based in Germany, it is owned by Gazprom, the Russian state-controlled energy giant. Five European companies—Shell International, ENGIE, OMV Aktiengesellschaft, Uniper SE, and Wintershall Dea—are major lenders to the project. The companies and their advocates have portrayed the 760-mile pipeline as a good business deal for Germany while downplaying claims that it serves Putin's geopolitical interests.

The companies paid $210,000 to McLarty Inbound in the first quarter of this year to lobby the State Department and National Security Council, according to lobbying disclosures reviewed by the Washington Free Beacon. They paid $840,000 in 2020 and $2,840,000 overall since August 2017. Burt and Burwell are the two lobbyists listed on the contract.

Two sources close to the issue told the Free Beacon that the Atlantic Council has had significant influence on the Nord Stream 2 debate. One source, a pipeline critic with insight into Atlantic Council activities, said Biden administration officials "care very much what institutions like the Atlantic Council say and think."

“LGBTQ+ icons and friends of GLAAD will start their day with the new cereal to celebrate that no matter who you are or who you love, you are too awesome to fit into a (cereal) box,” the message read.

It went on to say that a portion of the profits earned from each box of cereal sold will go towards “accelerating acceptance and advancing equality for the LGBTQ+ community,” a message that seems to stand in direct contradiction to Kellogg’s mission statement, “Nourishing families so they can flourish and thrive.”

A People’s Guide to the War Industry -2: Profits & Deception

Christian Sorensen maps out the global system of weapons mongering. Second in a series of five articles on the U.S. military-industrial-congressional complex.

War corporations are spread across the United States. The top war industry hubs in the U.S. are Huntsville, Alabama; greater Boston; greater Tampa, Florida; the Dallas-Fort Worth region; southern California; and the corridor stretching from northeast Virginia, through Washington, to Baltimore (consistently home to the wealthiest counties in the country).

The U.S. war industry profits well through global supply chains, including setting up subsidiaries in allied capitalist countries and using those countries’ industrial bases to produce parts of a weapons platform (such as the costly, underperforming F-35 Joint Strike Fighter, parts of which are built in locations as diverse as Italy and Japan).

War corporations manage global chains by organizing, coordinating, and enforcing a hierarchical command structure upon disparate locations. Orders flow down the chain and capital flows up, allowing the corporation’s executives, and ultimately Wall Street — not workers who make the products — to harvest enormous amounts of wealth. This exacerbates inequality, not just in Lemont Furnace, Pennsylvania, and Marietta, Georgia, but also Rochester, England, and Aire-sur-l’Adour, France — all locations where U.S. war products are made. War corporations paint these actions as “building lasting capacity” and other euphemisms.

A euphemism is a kinder, gentler term used in place of a direct, often more accurate one. The MIC employs euphemisms adeptly. Public relations gurus know the English language very well. Recall George Orwell’s 1946 essay “Politics and the English Language:”

“In our time, political speech and writing are largely the defence of the indefensible… Thus political language has to consist largely of euphemism, question-begging and sheer cloudy vagueness.”

With the care of a sommelier, MIC propagandists select the perfect euphemisms to mask their activities and present death and destruction in comfortable terms. Getting rid of euphemism, pursuing an honest language, is one step toward achieving a system that benefits people and planet.

Globe-Spanning Installations

Military installations are avenues through which corporations route goods and services. Sometimes the U.S. military sets up an installation overseas with permission from the allied capitalist regime. Sometimes the ruling class orders the military to take the land by force. It stole land in Guam, compensating locals a paltry sum or nothing at all. It took the Enewetak Atoll in the Marshall Islands. It stole Vieques, Puerto Rico. It teamed up with the Danish government to remove the indigenous Inughuit to make way for Thule Air Base in northwest Greenland. And the Pentagon and State Department teamed up with the United Kingdom to remove Chagossians from the Chagos Archipelago in the Indian Ocean in order to set up what is now called Naval Support Facility Diego Garcia.

Incredible corporate profit (e.g. base operations, ordnance, platforms, construction, fuel, maintenance) runs through each military installation. Most U.S. military bases overseas are not located in active war zones. The largest concentrations of U.S. troops are on bases in the Persian Gulf, Europe, and the Western Pacific.

There are thousands of U.S. military installations inside the United States (land stolen from the Native Americans). As contract announcements indicate, Corporate America is sometimes put in charge of studying and documenting the effect a planned base or weapons range might have on the surrounding community — aircraft noise, potential for mishaps and accidents, and the extent to which land use works with or against local designs — even though Corporate America stands to benefit if the base or range gets established.

Colombian Rioters Burn Palace Of Justice In Tulua, As Protests Rage For Nearly A Month

On May 25th, the Palace of Justice in the Colombian city of Tuluá was set on fire after a wave of violent riots.

The images of the burning building were disseminated on social networks by the authorities, who condemned what happened in this city in the department of Valle del Cauca, 94 kilometers north of Cali.

According to reports and videos released by the Police, the flames they razed much of the roof and the second floor from the judicial institution of this city.

Additionally, there are rioters who target the members of the Police themselves, seeking to discredit the protests. In addition, they report that several judicial processes against agents of the security forces were in the Palace of Justice.

“Apparently these people accompanied by the Police would be involved with the burning of the Palace of Justice in Tuluá-Valle, they tell us that they saw them near the place where everything happened,” wrote on Twitter the official account of Movimiento Naranja Cali, a collective of activists belonging to alternative sectors of Colombian politics.

“Attacks like those of tonight in Tuluá are no longer vandalism and become terrorist acts. Peaceful protest is legitimate, violence is a crime,” said Colombian Justice Minister Wilson Ruiz on Twitter.

Defense Minister Diego Molano Aponte, for his part, considered that “the vandals want to obstruct justice with burns like the one tonight at the Palace of Justice in Tuluá.”

“Infamous that they celebrate it. Those responsible are going to know the weight of the Law,” he wrote on Twitter.

US embassies in Greece, Spain, Cambodia and Bosnia have put up Black Lives Matter flags after being encouraged to show support for the movement in a secret memo from State Department head Antony Blinken.

The flags were put up on Tuesday to celebrate George Floyd Day and ritually humiliate the American people as part of what Soviet defector Yuri Bezmenov called the "process of demoralization."

A leaked State Department memo obtained by Human Events showed Secretary of State Antony Blinken gave "blanket written authorization" to all US embassies to fly the new flag of the Globalist American Empire (GAE).

"The Department supports the use of the term 'Black Lives Matter' in messaging content, speeches, and other diplomatic engagements with foreign audiences to advance racial equity and access to justice on May 25 and beyond," the memo stated. "We encourage posts to focus on the need to eliminate systemic racism and its continued impact."

Biden: Some US Intel Members Believe COVID-19 Came from Chinese ‘Laboratory Accident’

President Joe Biden on Wednesday said that the U.S. Intelligence Community (IC) believes “two likely scenarios” caused the CCP virus outbreak in China, noting that a significant number of officials believe the virus escaped via a “laboratory accident.”

His White House-released statement comes in the midst of officials saying they do not believe the virus developed naturally—contradicting the official narrative of the Chinese Communist Party, which has said that the virus was spread via a wet market in Wuhan, Hebei Province, in late 2019. In recent days, a growing number of officials—including U.S. National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases chief Anthony Fauci, have suggested that the virus did not develop naturally.

Texas passes law to make abortion a felony if Supreme Court overturns Roe v. Wade

Lawmakers in the Republican-controlled Texas Legislature have passed a so-called "trigger" bill that would criminalize performing an abortion in the state should the Supreme Court decide to overturn Roe v. Wade.

The bill, H.B. 1280, which stipulates that state residents "may not knowingly perform, induce, or attempt an abortion," received final approval from the state Senate on Tuesday and is now on its way to Republican Gov. Greg Abbott's desk.

The bill is scheduled to take effect "to the extent permitted" 30 days after Roe v. Wade is either "wholly or partly" overturned.

Once in effect, those performing an abortion in the state will be committing a second-degree felony and be subjected to a civic penalty of at least $100,000. Furthermore, should the unborn child die as a result of the offense, the crime escalates to a first-degree felony which, according to the Dallas Morning News, could carry up to a life sentence in prison.

There are no exceptions in the bill for pregnancies that result from rape or incest, however, some narrow exceptions exist for pregnant women who face medical emergencies.

Why does it matter?

The legislation anticipates a pro-life ruling from the ideologically conservative Supreme Court when it takes up a case about abortion this fall, or perhaps in subsequent cases.

The court announced earlier this month that it had agreed to hear arguments this fall in a dispute over a Mississippi law that bans virtually all abortions after 15 weeks of pregnancy. The case, Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health Organization, is the first to make it to the nation's top court from an onslaught of state laws passed by Republicans in recent years which were designed to challenge Roe v. Wade.

The court's decision to hear the case sets up a key showdown that many pro-life advocates believe could result in a major rollback of abortion rights.

The legislature's approval of the bill came less than a week after another pro-life measure restricting abortion was signed into law in the state.

Last Wednesday, Gov. Abbott signed into law a bill that prohibits abortions as early as six weeks, or once a fetal heartbeat is detected, and empowers nearly any private citizen to sue abortion providers or anyone who "aids or abets" an abortion.

White House Says Statements on Covid Origin Will Not Be Made Until the Completion of Intel Community’s 90-Day Review

The White House on Wednesday said statements on the origins of Covid-19 will not be made until the completion of a new 90-day review ordered by Joe Biden.

Isn’t that convenient.

The Biden Admin on Tuesday shut down the State Department’s inquiry into the origins of Covid-19 and whether it leaked from the Wuhan lab.

On Wednesday, Biden ordered the intelligence community to “redouble their efforts to collect and analyze information that could bring us closer to a definitive conclusion, and to report back to me in 90 days.”

Now the Biden White House is saying they will not release anymore statements on the origins of Covid as the crooked intel community acts as clean-up crew and covers for Fauci.

Fox News reporter Peter Doocy asked if Biden would punish China if it turns out Covid escaped the Wuhan lab during Wednesday’s briefing and he was shut down.

“We’re not going to go there just yet. We have to go through the 90 day review and once we have the 90 day review we will be able to reassess,” White House Deputy Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said.

IAEA Chief Warns Iran Has Already Reached Nuclear Weapons Capable Enrichment

Amid the fifth and what's expected to be the final round of Iran nuclear talks in Vienna, the director-general of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has voiced that time is running out on reaching an agreement given the Islamic Republic has already reached bomb-building capability in terms of enriched uranium purity levels.

IAEA chief Rafael Grossi told Financial Times that Iran has reached uranium purity levels that "only countries making bombs are reaching" after routinely ramping up enrichment since Trump pulled out of the Obama-era JCPOA back in May 2018.

Calling the current situation "very concerning" (and especially if a deal is not ultimately reached in Vienna), he explained to FT:

"A country enriching at 60 per cent is a very serious thing — only countries making bombs are reaching this level," said Grossi. "Sixty per cent is almost weapons grade, commercial enrichment is 2, 3 [per cent]."

Grossi still defended Iran's "sovereign right" to do so. Tehran has always justified its program as only for domestic energy consumption needs, while its Ayatollahs over the years going back to the 1980's have consistently condemned nuclear weapons as 'unIslamic'.

"We don’t seem to find much need for that at the current level of industrial, medical activity in Iran, but this is for a country to decide," he said.

Just ahead of this week's round of talks in which draft documents of an agreement are expected to be hashed out and finalized, Tehran and the UN nuclear watchdog IAEA reached a last minute understanding to extend a technical agreement which allows inspectors access to surveillance images of nuclear sites after just before the weekend Iran ended the program. This vital access which allows for continued close monitoring was extended for up to another month, which all parties hope is long enough to see a deal through.

Meanwhile, there's little doubt that IAEA chief Grossi's words will be received with most worry and alarm in Tel Aviv after on Tuesday Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu said while standing at a press conference beside US Secretary of State Antony Blinken: "I can tell you that I hope that the United States will not go back to the old JCPOA because we believe that that deal paves the way for Iran to have an arsenal of nuclear weapons with international legitimacy," the PM said.

"We also reiterated that whatever happens, Israel will always reserve the right to defend itself against a regime committed to our destruction, committed to getting the weapons of mass destruction for that end," the Israeli prime minister added, introducing a bit of awkwardness at the meeting given Blinken responded by reiterating US support for reaching a deal with Iran.

A former gymnastics coach has been charged with child sex crimes by police in Western Australia, following allegations he indecently dealt with two girls aged 12 and 13 while coaching them.

7.30 can reveal Child Abuse Squad detectives charged the 34-year-old man — who cannot be named for legal reasons — with eight offences against the two girls, which allegedly took place between February 2019 and December 2020.

It follows the release of a damning investigation by the Human Rights Commission into gymnastics in Australia, which found a 'toxic' culture of physical, emotional and sexual abuse in the sport.

Sports Integrity Australia (SIA), a new agency that investigates issues such as doping, child abuse and match fixing in Australian sport, passed details of the complaint to WA Police earlier this year, and detectives laid charges on March 16.

"We identified elements we felt were relevant to a criminal investigation, and as part of having law enforcement embedded within our agency to be able to deal with these issues effectively, we passed those matters to the Western Australia Police," SIA chief executive David Sharpe said.

SIA has received 35 complaints of misconduct and abuse in the sport of gymnastics, but this is the only one that has resulted in a criminal charge.

Mr Sharpe said the agency will conduct child protection audits into all sports, at all levels of competition, over the next three years.

"It is incumbent on us to protect children in sport at all levels and it doesn't matter whether they are elite or not," he said.

"So whilst gymnastics at a high performance level [usually involves] younger athletes, we have got to also protect kids that just want to turn up on a weekend and play sport through different structures."

More athletes expected to come forward

The Human Rights Commission's review found sexual abuse was common in the sport, with one gymnast telling the commission that during stretching sessions her coach would "have an erection, which I would feel him pushing repetitively on my hips or back".

Interviewed gymnasts also reported to the commission incidents of "sexual misconduct and abuse that occurred during training sessions, in both public and hidden spaces".

Jewish House Democrats sent a letter urging President Joe Biden to appoint a “United States Ambassador-at-Large to Monitor and Combat Anti-Semitism” and condemning the comments made by their House colleagues.

Rep. Josh Gottheimer (D-NY), Rep. Elaine Luria (D-VA), and Kathy Manning (D-NC) all signed onto the letter, first obtained by Punchbowl News, saying they are “deeply disturbed by the recent surge of antisemitic incidents in the United States.”

The group of Democrats said they believe there needs to be a united front in order to “combat rising antisemitism in this country.” The Democrats explained, surge in the last few weeks all over the United States, “including attacks on Jewish Americans in New York, California, and Florida.”

In Times Square, a group yelling antisemitic slurs viciously beat, kicked, and pepper-sprayed an unsuspecting Jewish man. In Los Angeles, a caravan of pro-Palestinian protestors descended on a restaurant in West Hollywood, demanding to know “who’s Jewish?” before unleashing a violent attack on diners while yelling antisemitic slurs. In Bal Harbour, a Jewish family visiting from New Jersey, was harassed by four men in an SUV shouting, “Free Palestine, f— you Jew, die Jew.” In Tucson, Arizona, an individual threw a rock through a glass window, vandalizing Congregation Chaverim. Jews across the United States are facing an extraordinarily tense environment of fear and insecurity.

The group said people are looking to find a scapegoat for the recent conflict in the Middle East, and it is undeniably the reason for the increase in antisemitic incidents as Jews are blamed for the conflict.

“Given that Jews in Europe and around the world have faced a similar increase in threats in recent weeks coinciding with the conflict, the group added. This is why they are arguing Biden “to swiftly nominate an experienced and qualified United States Ambassador-at-Large to Monitor and Combat Anti-Semitism.”

The group had also pointed out, representatives have recently been “accusing Israel of being an ‘apartheid state’ and committing ‘act[s] of terrorism.'” They continued to add that statements like the ones recently heard by members of congress are “antisemitic at their core” and have “contribute to a climate that is hostile to many Jews.

“We must never forget that less than eighty years ago, within the lifetime of our parents and grandparents, six million people were murdered by the Nazis in the Holocaust because they were Jews,” they had added. “Israel has long provided the Jewish people with a homeland in which they can be safe after facing centuries of persecution.”

They claimed that learning from history, “when this type of violence and inflammatory rhetoric goes unaddressed, it can fuel increasing hatred and violence, and lead to unspeakable acts against Jews.”
