Senate Preparing $10 Billion Bailout Fund for Jeff Bezos Space Firm

Bezos’s Blue Origin lost its bid for a major NASA contract to Elon Musk, but the Senate is ordering the agency to give a second one now.

Now that Jeff Bezos’s space flight company Blue Origin has lost a multibillion contract to Elon Musk’s SpaceX, Congress is prepping the ground for Bezos to win a contract anyway, ordering NASA to make not one but two awards.

The order would come through the Endless Frontier Act, a bill to beef up resources for science and technology research that’s being debated on the Senate floor this week. An amendment was added to that legislation by Sen. Maria Cantwell, D-Wash., to hand over $10 billion to NASA — money that most likely would go to Blue Origin, a company that’s headquartered in Cantwell’s home state.

Cantwell’s amendment is no sure bet though: Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., introduced a last-minute amendment Monday to eliminate the $10 billion. “It does not make a lot of sense to me that we would provide billions of dollars to a company owned by the wealthiest guy in America,” Sanders told The Intercept Tuesday.

The Bezos space company had been competing against SpaceX for a contract to put astronauts on the moon, the first such trips since 1972, but lost the bidding process with a price tag twice that of SpaceX. NASA announced the award to the Elon Musk-owned company last month.

Cantwell’s measure wouldn’t rescind the grant to SpaceX but would create an additional contract that Bezos’s company would be in line to win. A third company, Dynetics, had also bid for the moonshot, but the author of the new amendment offers a strong suggestion of which company it’s likely to benefit.

Cantwell told NASA’s incoming administrator, former Sen. Bill Nelson, that she was surprised at the way the award unfolded, before introducing the legislation to add a new one.

“I think there needs to be redundancy,” or multiple contractors in case one fails, she told Nelson at his confirmation hearing. “And it has to be clear this process can’t be redundancy later. It has to be redundancy now.”

Israel Admits Iron Dome Battery Shot Down One Of Its Own Drones During Gaza Fighting

Friendly and hostile drones are likely to fill the skies in future conflicts and defense systems will need to be able to quickly tell the difference.

The Israel Defense Forces, or IDF, has confirmed that an Iron Dome battery accidentally shot down an Israeli Skylark drone during a recent conflict with Palestinian militants in the Gaza Strip. The downing of the Elbit Skylark unmanned aircraft has reportedly caused great concern among Israeli officials, who are worried about what it might mean for future operations where significant numbers of friendly and hostile drones, and potentially manned aircraft, are likely to be zipping around above the battlefield in relatively close proximity.

Israeli media outlet Haaretz was first to report on the accidental shootdown, which the IDF subsequently acknowledged. It's not clear when the incident occurred and how many drones, overall, Iron Dome defense systems may have destroyed in the recent fighting in and around Gaza. The IDF had announced on May 17 that Iron Dome had claimed its first drone kill in combat. Palestinian militant group Hamas also said it had launched a number of unmanned aircraft at Israel during the conflict, including examples of a new "suicide drone" called Shehab, which you can read more about here.

Ninth Circuit Court Overturned by SCOTUS on Immigration in Unanimous Rebuke

The Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals is establishing an embarrassing track record of being overturned by the Supreme Court due to its radical decisions that are not based in law.

“The Supreme Court unanimously ruled against a Mexican green card holder challenging a deportation order on Monday,” the Washington Examiner reported.

“The court’s ruling reversed a previous decision from the California-based U.S. Court of Appeals for the 9th Circuit.,” the report continued. “That court had held that Refugio Palomar-Santiago, a Mexican citizen deported for a 1998 DUI, was removed invalidly because of a subsequent Supreme Court decision finding that DUIs were not sufficient cause for removal.”

The case United States vs. Palomar-Santiago concerned “a Mexican national living in the United States” who “was convicted in California state court of felony DUI in 1988.” The Ninth Circuit, of course, attempted to block the removal, even though the “lower courts understood that conviction to be an ‘aggravated felony’ subjecting a noncitizen to removal from the United States.”

As stated in the case summary, “Palomar-Santiago moved to dismiss the indictment on the ground that his prior removal order was invalid in light of the 2004 holding in Leocal v. Ashcroft that felony DUI is not an aggravated felony. Following Ninth Circuit precedent, the District Court and Court of Appeals held that Palomar-Santiago was excused from proving the first two requirements of §1326(d) because his felony DUI conviction had not made him removable. The District Court granted the motion to dismiss, and the Ninth Circuit affirmed.”

Justice Sonia Sotomayor struck down the Ninth Circuit’s decision in a unanimous ruling by the Supreme Court.

“When Congress uses ‘mandatory language’ in an administrative exhaustion provision, ‘a court may not excuse a failure to exhaust,’” Sotomayor wrote in a clear rebuke of the Ninth Circuit. “Yet that is what the Ninth Circuit’s rule does.”

“Another 9th circuit reversal,” remarked Steven Mazie, a SCOTUS correspondent for the Economist. “Can’t immediately think of a recent Supreme Court decision where a 9th circuit ruling was affirmed.”

State of New York Subpoenas Twitter for Individuals Connected to “We Build the Wall” Organization

On Tuesday the SDNY finally acted and removed Steve Bannon from the government’s case against the entrepreneurs who led the ‘We Build the Wall’ campaign.

These individuals, including Bannon, solicited donations and built a section of the wall on the Southern Border.

Bannon was pardoned by President Trump back on January 20th.

The DOJ fought the pardon in an attempt to ignore the law and President Trump’s pardon. (Of course, all of Trump’s pardons were to free innocent Americans wrongfully sentenced by the corrupt American justice system.)

Finally yesterday, Bannon was removed from the We Build the Wall case. This should have been done in January.

But it didn’t take long for New York to come up with more BS actions against Bannon. Per a report at Populist Press, a subpoena was sent to Twitter dated May 24, two days ago that demands certain documents from Twitter. It is believed that this references those close to Steve Bannon.

What has our Justice System turned into? Obama judges and corrupt attorneys and investigators – this is not the America we grew up with.
