A manhunt was underway in Virginia on Wednesday after a husband and wife – both military veterans – were brutally murdered outside their home in Springfield, authorities said.

The couple were shot in cold blood in their front yard just before 9:30 a.m., Fairfax County police said.

"They did nothing wrong. They were tragically and horribly murdered in their neighborhood," Fairfax County police Maj. Ed O’Carroll said at an evening news conference.

O’Carroll identified the victims as Edward McDaniel Jr., 55, and Brenda McDaniel, 63. Both were military physicians, he said.

Edward McDaniel was an active Army colonel, FOX 5 of Washington D.C. reported.

Police had yet to identify the suspect or suspects who they believe killed the couple. Investigators were searching for a 2018 light-colored Nissan Altima with Maryland plate number 1EF1479.

"We still need to identify this killer, we need to get him off the streets," Fairfax County police Chief Kevin Davis said. "We think he's likely still local. … The car may be parked in your neighborhood right now."

O’Carroll said police had yet to identify a motive for Wednesday's shooting.

"There's a lot of questions that we still have," he added. "The key is the car, but ultimately the key is the shooter or a second person."

A $10,000 reward was being offered for information in the case that leads to an arrest. Earlier in the day, Davis said authorities believed the "shooter or shooters" were known to a relative of the two victims.

At least one other family member was inside the home at the time of the shooting, which police said was directly related to an incident at the home earlier this week, according to FOX 5.

The killings marked the ninth and tenth homicides in Fairfax County this year.

"It's nine and 10 too many, O'Carroll said.

Springfield is located about 14 miles southwest of Washington, D.C.

Atlanta 'defund the police' backer has car stolen – by kids in broad daylight: reports

An Atlanta city councilman – who is aiming to be the city's next mayor – had his car stolen by children in broad daylight Wednesday, according to reports.

Councilman Antonio Brown was attending a ribbon-cutting ceremony at an event in northeast Atlanta around noon when at least four kids jumped into his car and took off, FOX 5 of Atlanta reported.

"You don’t immediately think, ‘Oh, these kids are going to steal my car,’" Brown said, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

The incident occurred amid a recent crime wave in the city. Brown, who joined the city's mayoral race less than three weeks ago, is running on a campaign of "reimagining public safety," the paper reported.

Last year, he voted in support of an ordinance to withhold $73 million from the budget of the Atlanta Police Department. The ordinance was narrowly voted down.

Brown said the thieves jumped in his vehicle Wednesday after he got out to speak with community leader Ben Norman. He noted his white Mercedes-Benz coupe has keyless push-to-start ignition and he failed to realize it had been started, reports said.

The councilman described the kids as being between ages 6 and 12, FOX 5 reported.

"One kid was in the driver’s seat. Ben attempted to open the door to get him out of the car. He fought with Ben. I then engaged and tried to get him out of the car. The three other kids were trying to figure out how to get in the car or stay out of the car. He started to hit on the gas," Brown said.

Brown added that he held on to the car in an attempt to stop them and was dragged about a block down the road before letting go

"As he started to speed up, and I knew that if I had not let go, I knew I probably could have killed myself because he was going so fast, I would have started to tumble. And I would have hurt him," the councilman said.

Brown doesn't plan on filing charges against the kids, who he says acted out of desperation, Atlanta's WSB-TV reported.

"This is a generational poverty issue. These kids, it’s 12:30 in the afternoon. Why aren’t they in school? Why aren’t we enforcing systems to ensure that if they are not in school, they’re in recreational centers?" he said.

Atlanta police are investigating.

Brown is under indictment on federal fraud charges related to alleged incidents that occurred in the years prior to him winning the council seat in 2019, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

ATLANTA, Ga. (CBS46) – Atlanta City Councilman Antonio Brown was indicted by a Fulton County Grand Jury, and charged for alleged attempts to defraud financial institutions.

“For years, Antonio Brown allegedly sought to defraud a number of banks and credit card companies by falsely claiming that he was the victim of identity theft,” said U.S. Attorney Byung J. “BJay” Pak in a release Wednesday.

Attorney Pak alleges Brown took out multiple loans, made several credit card purchases, and then claimed to be the victim of identity fraud to avoid repayment. He is charged with wire fraud, mail fraud, bank fraud, and making false statements on a bank application.
