Maricopa County Recorder Stephen Richer's 'boring' job is to save democracy
Opinion: He never thought he'd have to fight against his own party on behalf of basic honesty and facts. But that's what it's come to.
A few weeks back Maricopa County Recorder Stephen Richer spoke publicly for the first time since being elected last November.
He hated having to do so.
He told the Maricopa County Supervisors, “As you all know, I ran on the goal of making the Maricopa County Recorder’s Office Boring Again. To that end, I had not given a single interview prior to Friday since taking office. I’d instead been focusing on the administrative and managerial aspects of the job – responsibilities that I truly love.”
Richer is a numbers guy. A logic guy. A straight-laced Republican who believes, genuinely, that the best way he can serve his country and his party is to fairly, impartially and honestly assure the integrity of the elections process.
And for this, he was called a criminal.
By Republicans.
Richer has reached the breaking point
He told the supervisors, “I have been accused of shredding ballots tabulated in an election I didn’t run. I have been accused of inserting fake ballots into the election system delivered from a South Korea plane. These claims have even been indulged by the Senate Majority Whip.
“More recently, I have been accused of deleting entire databases – even though I participated in the transference of requested databases to the Arizona Senate and have seen them with my own eyes.”
