1. China arrested doctors for telling the truth about COVID-19

It was widely reported in western media that the first Chinese doctors to warn about the novel coronavirus in Wuhan were arrested and reprimanded by police for “spreading rumors online” and “severely disrupting social order.”

One of the Wuhan doctors forced to recant his early warnings about COVID-19, Li Wenliang, died from the virus in early February 2020.

That Chinese authorities arrested and reprimanded doctors for telling the truth about COVID-19 during the earliest stages of the pandemic should be top of mind when interpreting future claims from Chinese scientists and officials about the virus.

1. Wuhan’s top bat-based coronavirus researcher said she lost sleep worrying the virus came from her lab.

China’s top virologist on bat-borne viruses, Shi Zhengli, told the Scientific American in March 2020 that the possibility of an accidental leak from her Wuhan lab was the first thing that crossed her mind when she learned of the virus’s outbreak in Wuhan in late December.

“Could they have come from our lab?” Shi, known by her colleagues as the “bat woman,” recalled thinking.

“The novel 2019 coronavirus is nature punishing the human race for keeping uncivilized living habits. I, Shi Zhengli, swear on my life that it has nothing to do with our laboratory,” she wrote on a Chinese social messaging app in early February 2020, according to Caixin Global. “I advise those who believe and spread rumors from harmful media sources … to shut their stinking mouths.”

1. China’s ‘Bat Woman’ expressed shock that COVID-19 broke out in Wuhan

Shi also told the Scientific American in March 2020 that she was shocked to learn of a novel coronavirus outbreak in Wuhan, some 600 miles north of where the bats that are known to carry similar viruses actually live.

“I had never expected this kind of thing to happen in Wuhan, in central China,” Shi said, adding that her studies had shown that southern China posed the greatest risk of coronaviruses jumping from animals to humans.

1. Chinese researcher published — then deleted — a study concluding COVID-19 probably originated from Wuhan lab in February 2020

Botao Xiao, a researcher at the South China University of Technology published a paper alongside another Chinese researcher on Feb. 6, 2020, reporting that the horseshoe bats known to carry a viral strain that shares 96.2% similarity to the virus that causes COVID-19 live 600 miles south of Wuhan in the Yunnan province.

The researchers also cited testimony from 60 people who lived in or visited Wuhan who said the bat ‘was never a food source in the city, and no bat was traded in the market.”

“The killer coronavirus probably originated from a laboratory in Wuhan” the two Chinese researchers noted in their paper, which was originally uploaded to Research Gate.

1. Deadly viruses have a history of escaping from Chinese laboratories

China has a history of letting deadly coronaviruses escape from its labs.

The first SARS virus escaped twice from the Chinese Institute of Virology in Beijing in 2004, one year after that virus had initially been contained.

It’s entirely reasonable to question whether SARS-CoV-2 — the virus that causes COVID-19 — could have also escaped from a Chinese lab.

1. China deleted early samples of COVID-19

In May 2020, China confirmed that it had authorized laboratories to destroy early samples of the virus that causes COVID-19 for “biosafety reasons.”

Also in May 2020, the New York Post reported that open-source intelligence uncovered in the United Kingdom revealed that the Wuhan Institute of Virology had censored a virus database in late 2019.

Later reports would reveal that the Wuhan Institute of Virology database removed a database containing information on at least 16,000 virus samples it had studied prior the pandemic in September 2019.

French Humanitarian Aid Worker on Trial for Sexually Abusing 24 Boys

A 52-year-old French humanitarian worker faces charges of sexually abusing 24 boys in several developing countries during his overseas work from 2013 to 2015.

French national Philippe Gérard is accused of sexually abusing 24 boys between the ages of nine and 15 from January 2013 to his arrest in October 2015. The abuses are believed to have taken place in Nepal, Cambodia, and India, where he took part in humanitarian work in local orphanages.

According to a report from the newspaper Le Parisien, Gérard had already been convicted of five sexual assaults on minors in 2005, years before he engaged in so-called “humanitarian missions” overseas.

Despite being on the sex offenders register and being prohibited from contact with minors, Gérard was involved in the NGO Philmy Voyageurs Solidaires. His mother had founded the charity in 2009, which offered schooling to children living on the streets of poor countries. The newspaper noting that the founder had never visited the locations herself, and her son’s details had been omitted from the organisation’s statutes.

Le Parisien reports that the 52-year-old is alleged to have slept naked with young boys, took showers with them, and touched them in a sexual manner. Investigators say that the children reported the same stories of sexual abuse at the hands of Gérard.

Following his arrest in October 2015, Gérard admitted that he had engaged in “sexual touching” but claimed he did not understand what he was doing was a crime, saying he found it difficult to understand “that children appearing radiant… could be victims”.

He also reportedly admitted to a psychologist that the humanitarian missions were a cover to clear his conscience while satisfying his sexual urges.

The sexual abuse of children by aid workers is a phenomenon that has gained prominence in the public eye in recent years. A 2018 report from the UK’s House of Commons international development committee found that sexual abuse was “endemic” across the international aid sector.

British MPs noted that the “globalised and often chaotic nature” of the humanitarian aid sector had made it attractive for those looking to exploit vulnerable people.

Just weeks before the release of the report, MPs were told the local and international aid workers working for Save the Children had raped children in 2008.

Corinna Csáky, a child development consultant who looked into the claims of abuse, stated that children in Haiti, South Sudan, and the Ivory Coast had reported being abused by NGO workers. Statements revealed charity employees sometimes gave the children they raped small amounts of money and paid minors to find other children for them to abuse.

West Texas Migrant Detention Center at 700% COVID Security Capacity

EAGLE PASS, Texas — The influx of large groups of migrants has resulted in severe facilities overcrowding in one of the west Texas sectors of the Border Patrol. The Del Rio Sector now leads the nation in the detention of migrants as it deals with the daily arrivals of large groups of Venezuelans. Detention capacities at temporary holding facilities are well above maximum levels.

A source within Customs and Border Protection, speaking on the condition of anonymity, provided Breitbart Texas with the update. A newly constructed facility in Eagle Pass designed to hold a maximum of 500 is seeing levels exceeding 700 in recent days. The sector is detaining nearly 1,500 migrants–earning the top detention spot in the country. The Rio Grande Valley Sector usually leads the nation, but is currently detaining more than 1,200, according to the source.

The source indicates COVID-19 recommended levels for the facility were limited to 125 detainees.

“That’s out the window,” the source says. “Most of our agents have been vaccinated, but the detainees haven’t,” he added.

Other facilities within the sector are also experiencing overcrowding. The main cause is the elimination of pathways to removal ended by the Biden Administration in January. The Asylum Cooperative Agreements (ACA) between the United States and Guatemala, Honduras, and El Salvador previously led to quick repatriation under the Trump administration. The “Remain in Mexico” program was cancelled as well.

Del Rio has been the focal point for large groups of Venezuelan nationals in recent months. The sector leads the nation in the arrest of that demographic. The source reports more than 400 migrants were arrested in Del Rio on Wednesday. The sector is currently detaining nearly 800 Venezuelans awaiting transfer to ICE, according to the source.

The Del Rio Sector is fully processing the migrants, including issuing a “Notice to Appear” which provides migrants with a court date for an immigration hearing. This practice, as reported by Breitbart Texas, was discontinued in the Rio Grande Valley to alleviate the overcrowding. That process, referred to as prosecutorial discretion, has received sharp criticism from elected officials in the area.

Osceola school dean arrested for molestation, 3rd school employee in weeks for sex crimes

A third Osceola County School District employee has been arrested for sex-related crimes in two weeks, the most recent being a dean at Harmony Middle School who was booked Wednesday, the Osceola County Sheriff’s Office announced Thursday.

Bradley Scott Linville, 51, was accused of three counts of molestation of a teenager, second-degree felonies, which carry a 45-year maximum sentence if he’s convicted.

Sheriff Marco López is scheduled to speak with reporters at 1:30 p.m., according to an agency statement. The sheriff’s office didn’t initially release any affidavits or reports on the arrest and court records also didn’t immediately appear on its website.

Linville has worked for the school district since August 1995, initially as a fifth-grade teacher at Michigan Avenue Elementary School and later taught at Discovery Middle School in 2005 after a hiatus, according to records provided by the district. From there, he served as Discovery Middle’s dean as well as other administrative roles there and two high schools before being appointed dean at Harmony Middle in 2019.

He was also a security specialist and a project manager handling school safety for the district from 2008 to 2010, records show.

Linville is the third known employee arrested for sex crimes recently. On May 12, now-former substitute teacher Joshua Merced-Trychta, 19, was federally charged with receiving and distributing child porn using the KiK instant messaging app.

The following week, school district IT worker, 59-year-old Phillip Knepper, was charged, accused of raping a child relative over the course of a few years.

A school district spokesperson has not yet responded to a request for comment on the recent arrests.

JCPD arrests man after multiple attempts to entice a minor

JEFFERSON CITY − Police arrested a 69-year-old Jefferson City man Wednesday for attempting to entice a minor.

Jefferson City Police say a mother of a 12-year-old contacted the department with concerns regarding a suspect standing around a school bus stop near High and Cherry Streets. The suspect on multiple occasions attempted to converse with the child by placing notes and currency under a rock, along the path where the child would walk home.

The child notified her mother and identified the address of the suspect. A registered sex offender was found at the same address and an investigation identified the suspect as being the same, a news release said.

JCPD's investigation revealed the suspect is a compliant sex offender and his previous case was sexual abuse of a 14-year-old girl in Columbia in 1997.

The suspect was located, arrested at his residence and transported to the Cole County Jail. Charges are being requested for the crimes of first degree stalking and attempted enticement of a child.

No name was released by Jefferson City Police.

The 1.5 tonne of heroin, seized in the port of Constantia, was concealed in a shipment of a legal company operated by the criminal network

Europol supported the Romanian Police (Poliția Română) in dismantling an organised crime group involved in large-scale drug trafficking. The operation involved also law enforcement authorities from Austria, Belgium, Czechia, France, Germany, Hungary, the Netherlands, Slovakia and Slovenia.

The action days on 19, 20 and 25 May and led to:

10 suspects arrested (7 in Belgium, 2 in the Netherlands and 1 in Romania)

1 452kg heroin seized for an estimated value of €45 million

Legal structures across the EU used to conceal the drug trafficking

On 10 May 2021, the Romanian authorities detected and then seized 1 452 kg heroin in two containers loaded with marble slates. The shipment arrived to the Romanian port of Constanta from the Middle East. The following operational activities and monitoring of the drug delivery led to the arrests of the main targets on 19-20 May. The Belgium authorities arrested another suspect on 25 May.

This operation is the result of a one year-long investigation targeting high-profile criminal network involved in large scale drug trafficking. The leader of the criminal network had established a complex logistical and legal trade infrastructure to facilitate the import of large quantities of drugs from the production sites to the distribution market in Europe. He was using a significant number of companies across the EU to organise the distribution flow and conceal the illegal trafficking behind the façade of legal trade.

The joint operational actions across the EU, which involved 90 officers in Romania only, were enabled by a swift judicial and law enforcement coordination, supported by Europol and Eurojust. Europol facilitated the information exchange and provided analytical support. On the action day, Europol supported the field activities by setting up a virtual command post. Europol also deployed an expert to Romania to enable the cross-checking of operational information in real-time. Eurojust facilitated the cooperation between judicial authorities, which enabled the controlled deliveries and the collection of evidence.

9/11 was in Al Qaeda’s rearview mirror and its mastermind, Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, was plotting a sequel. The Gitmo dossier for Paracha first details a plan to use his “textile business to smuggle explosives into the US” and these “ready-made explosives, specifically C4” would go into shipping containers full of “women and children’s clothing”.

Shipping Al Qaeda’s C4 to America would be more lucrative than dumping sweatshop labor sweatpants because “if al-Qaida used detainee’s textile company for shipping explosives to the US, he would likely be paid additional money beyond the standard shipping fees”. No word on whether there would have been a bonus for every American blown up.

And then things escalated from there with testimony that Paracha allegedly claimed that he, “believed he could obtain unspecified chemicals from Chinese sources”. The fellow he was talking to about the unspecified chemicals, Ammar al-Baluchi, one of the few Gitmo Jihadis whom neither Obama nor Biden had managed to release yet, had helped out the 9/11 hijackers with flight simulators, and manuals, and allegedly chatted with Mohammed Atta.

After 9/11, Al-Baluchi was looking at all sorts of plans for crashing planes into things, like the American consulate in Karachi or London’s Heathrow airport, but there were other options on the table. The nature of the chemicals out of China was never specified, but the KSM lieutenant believed they were” chemical or biological agents” that could be used “as a weapon”.

Paracha reportedly advised Al Qaeda that “one should look for a similar looking chemical and put it in between the good chemicals and it would be very easy to get [through] customs.” With his business experience, he could offer Al Qaeda tips on smuggling such as warning them about the “radiological sensors at ports or places of entry into the US” that would make it difficult to smuggle radioactive materials into the country”.

On Tuesday, Attorney General Mark Brnovich filed a Motion to Intervene with the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals on behalf of the State of Arizona in the Democratic National Committee lawsuit challenging Arizona’s ban on ballot harvesting and statutes regulating out-of-precinct voting. Attorney General Brnovich is moving to intervene on this matter on behalf of the State because defendant Secretary of State Hobbs has announced that she does not support an appeal.

As noted in today’s filing, Attorney General Brnovich moves to intervene in this matter, assuring the State’s interest in retaining its “broad authority to structure and regulate elections,” is fully preserved and that there is no possible procedural hindrance to Supreme Court review of the matter. The Attorney General is empowered by Arizona law to seek intervention in federal court on behalf of the State.

Earlier this month the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals granted Brnovich’s motion to stay the Court’s mandate in the DNC v. Hobbs case. The stay ensures Arizona’s ban on ballot harvesting and the law regarding out-of-precinct voting will remain in place until the U.S. Supreme Court has a chance to hear the appeal of the case.

Before the 2016 election, the U.S. Supreme Court stayed the Ninth Circuit’s election-eve injunction against the enforcement of Arizona’s prohibition on ballot harvesting and out-of-precinct voting following a lawsuit filed by the Democratic National Committee, the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee, and the Arizona Democratic Party. The State then prevailed at trial.

Investigation: Many cryptocurrencies are nothing but a massive Ponzi scheme promoted by paid “influencers”

Just in 2021 alone, some 10,000 new cryptocurrencies have been “minted” and hyped in massive pump-and-dump schemes that are making a few people very rich while leaving many others holding the bag. As it turns out, most cryptocurrencies follow the same Ponzi scheme patterns, which typically involve social media “influencers” drawing in the lemmings to “get rich quick” before eventually herding them straight off the cliff.

While a handful of cryptos do hold value in the sense that they offer a legitimate decentralized alternative to fake fiat currency from the likes of the Federal Reserve, thousands of others are little more than speculative meme coins with zero regulatory oversight and questionable functionality.

Feds try to seize 'penny pinching' software mogul billionaire Robert Brockman's $15M Colorado fishing compound and $77.9M in Swiss bank account linked to 'the biggest-ever fraud in the US'

Billionaire Robert Brockman may have to turn over his $15 million fishing compound in Colorado and $77.9 million in a Swiss bank account to federal prosecutors.

Brockman, 79, was indicted last year in what Bloomberg described as 'the biggest U.S. tax-evasion case ever against an individual' after he allegedly failed to report $2 billion in income to the Internal Revenue Service.

The Texas billionaire, former CEO of the software firm Reynolds & Reynolds, also allegedly used a foreign company he 'secretly controlled' to buy secondary debt in the company at a discount in 2009, the outlet reported.

Bloomberg obtained court filings from March that show the government is trying to seize the 143-acre property and fishing lodge on the Frying Pan River and a trove of cash in Switzerland's Mirabaud Bank tied to the fraud case.

The outlet reported that prosecutors in the United States first sought forfeiture of the Mirabaud account in October and that Swiss prosecutors have frozen more than $1 billion held in bank accounts belonging to Brockman.

The 42-page indictment against Brockman names two Colorado properties of interest in the case.

According to the indictment, Brockman paid $15 million to purchase the 'Mountain Queen' property located in Pitkin County on May 17, 2005.

He later spent another $15 million of funds allegedly obtained through debt fraud on the 'Frying Pan Canyon Ranch' in Pitkin County on December 16, 2010, according to the indictment.

Brockman allegedly spent another $8.2 million on renovations and improvements to the Frying Pan Canyon property in 2014.

It was not immediately clear if the asset forfeiture reported by Bloomberg also includes the Mountain Queen property or his Houston mansion.

Bloomberg obtained an asset-seizure affidavit filed by IRS special agent Ted Lair that alleges Brockman laundered some of his money through funds managed by billionaire Robert Smith's private equity firm Vista Equity Partners.

Smith has agreed to cooperate with prosecutors against Brockman after he admitted to illegally hiding his own money in offshore banks, the outlet reported.

Smith, the richest black person in America with a net worth about $7 billion, has also been ordered to pay $139 million in back taxes and penalties.

Brockman and Smith have a business relationship dating back to the late 1990s, according to documents filed in connection with Smith's non-prosecution agreement.

Brockman became an investor in Smith's private equity fund back in 2000, first with a $300 million commitment, and later increasing it to $1 billion.

Biden’s Top Asia Official Says US Engagement With China Is Over

Kurt Campbell says competition will now define US-China relations

The White House’s top official for Asia said on Wednesday that the era of US engagement with China is over, and now, the two countries’ relationship will be defined by competition.

“The period that was broadly described as engagement has come to an end,” said Kurt Campbell, the head of Indo-Pacific affairs on the National Security Council. Speaking at an event hosted by Stanford University, Campbell said US policy towards China will now follow a “new set of strategic parameters” and that “the dominant paradigm is going to be competition.”

Campbell blamed the shift in policy on Chinese President Xi Jinping and said Beijing is shifting its policies to “harsh power, or hard power.” Campbell said the best way to confront China is “to work with allies, partners, and friends.”

Boosting military cooperation with allies in Asia is key to the Biden administration’s China policy. As part of this strategy, the US is strengthening the group known as Quad, whose members include the US, Australia, India, and Japan. President Biden held the first-ever summit between Quad leaders virtually in March. Campbell said the US is planning to convene an in-person Quad summit for this fall.

In the Obama administration, Campbell was the top Asia diplomat in the State Department and is seen as the architect of what became known as the “pivot” to Asia. While President Obama began reshuffling some resources to the Indo-Pacific to challenge China, his disastrous interventions in the Middle East got him bogged down, and the pivot was not fully realized.

Campbell says Biden’s Asia pivot — which is a continuation of Trump’s — is for real. “For the first time, really, we are now shifting our strategic focus, our economic interests, our military might more to the Indo-Pacific,” he said.

The Pentagon recently identified China as the top “pacing threat” facing the US military, and military leaders are repeating the mantra. President Biden has also made it clear that China is his top foreign policy priority. In his first address to Congress, Biden said the US is in competition with China to “win the 21st century.” To compete with China, Biden said he told President Xi that the US will militarize the Indo-Pacific “just as we do with NATO in Europe.”

Schumer strikes deal with Crapo to save China bill

Senate Majority Leader Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.) has struck a gentlemen’s agreement with Sen. Mike Crapo (R-Idaho) to allow a vote on his trade deal with Senate Finance Committee Chairman Ron Wyden (D-Ore.) as an amendment to a China competitiveness bill.

The amendment has a good chance of passing, and the breakthrough between Schumer and Crapo means there’s now a chance the competitiveness bill, which has been renamed the Innovation and Competition Act, could pass Thursday.

“Crapo is very happy with the deal,” one GOP senator said in reference to the gentlemen’s agreement between Schumer and Crapo to allow a vote on bipartisan language to extend trade preferences and tariff relief.

Crapo and Wyden had a deal on the trade preferences, but Schumer blocked it from being added to the competitiveness bill.

Because the Crapo amendment would come after the Senate has voted to end debate on the substitute amendment to the competitiveness bill, it needs the sign-off of every single senator. So-called post-cloture amendments need unanimous consent.

Sen. Mike Lee (R-Utah) was the last GOP senator to sign off on the Crapo-Schumer deal.

A GOP senator said Lee gave the green light for allowing a post-cloture amendment after requesting more time to study it.

In a sign that the impasse is close to being resolved, Sen. Mike Rounds (R-S.D.) voted in support of a motion to end debate on the substitute amendment, which would help advance the Innovation and Competition Act to a final up-or-down vote Thursday evening or maybe Friday.

“My understanding is the deal with the Dems is there. It’s just a matter of one more member on our side who has to agree. It’s pretty close,” Rounds said, declining to name the lone GOP holdout.

“I wanted to make sure the Finance title had a fair shot of getting in and now I’m quite comfortable we have a real good shot of getting it in,” Rounds said of his vote in support of the Schumer substitute amendment.

The Senate on Wednesday passed Sen. Rand Paul's amendment which, if it becomes law, would prohibit the U.S. government from funding gain-of-function research in China.

"Thousands of animals at the wet market have been looked at. None of them have carried COVID-19. We've tried to infect COVID-19 into bats. It doesn't grow well in bats. It seems most adapted and suitable for humans. We may not know whether this ever arose out of a Wuhan lab, but I think gain-of-function research, where we take a deadly virus — sometimes much more deadly than COVID — and then we increase its transmissibility to mammals, is wrong. In 2014 NIH stopped all of this research. I'm using the same definition to say any gain-of-function research should not be funded in China with U.S. taxpayer dollars and I recommend a yes vote," Paul said.

A veteran air marshal who asked not to be identified said “the Washington Field Office in Washington D.C. was almost exclusively dedicated to VIP services for Congress.” Another longtime FAM told Judicial Watch he was deployed on several VIP missions with low-profile members of Congress. Conservative watchdog Judicial Watch has sued Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot, D., on behalf of the Daily Caller News Foundation, the group announced Thursday, over her policy of granting interviews to only non-White reporters.

The lawsuit, filed in the United States District Court for the Northern District of Illinois, Eastern Division, alleges Lightfoot violated reporter Thomas Catenacci's equal protection rights under the Fourteenth Amendment when she didn't respond to multiple requests for interviews, as well as his First Amendment rights.

Lightfoot made waves earlier this month when she announced she would only grant one-on-one interviews to Black and Brown reporters upon the two-year anniversary of her taking office, scolding the Chicago media for its "overwhelming Whiteness."

Last Friday Judge Brian Amero from Henry County in Georgia ruled that the audit in Fulton County, Georgia, must proceed. This comes after a video report by The Gateway Pundit back in early December revealed the same batch of ballots were being counted two and three times.

The judge ordered the parties to appear at the Fulton County ballot storage location at 10 AM on May 28th, which is the Friday before the Memorial Day Weekend.

On Wednesday attorneys for the Fulton County Board of Registration and Elections filed a last-minute request to ask the court to dismiss the entire case before the actual forensic audit begins!

The motion to dismiss, which was filed on Wednesday, argued Garland Favorito and the other plaintiffs never served the county and that the Superior Court of Fulton County lacks jurisdiction in the case.

“It is an improper party because it is not the final policymaker with control over elections,” the motion said. “The Elections Code states that where there is a board of elections, that entity acts as a superintendent and conducts elections and primaries.”

(New York Post) – Twitter on Thursday said it is worried about the safety of its staff in India and called for the government to respect freedom of expression, days after Indian police visited its office in New Delhi over its labeling of a tweet by a governing party spokesman as “manipulated media.”

Israeli Military Dropped Leaflets With Photos Of Senior Syrian Officer, Hezbollah Commander Over Al-Quneitra

On May 27, the Israeli military dropped leaflets with photos of Syrian Arab Army (SAA) officers and commanders of Lebanon’s Hezbollah over the southern Syrian governorate of al-Quneitra.

Brig. Gen. Hussein Hammouch, commander of the 1st Corps’ 90th Brigade, and Munir Ali Naeem Shaito, a senior commander of Hezbollah, can be both seen in the photos.

Shaito, also known as “Jawad Hashim” and “Haj Hashim,” is reportedly one of Hezbollah’s top commanders in al-Qunitra and a personal advisor to Brig. Gen. Hammouch. “A criminal like his father” was written under Shaito photo in the leaflets.

The Israeli military dropped similar leaflets with threats to several units and commanders of the SAA 1st Corps over the last few months.

In leaflets dropped over al-Quneitra on May 6, the Israeli military accused Brig. Gen. Hammouch of facilitating Hezbollah movements on the separation of forces line in coordination with Shaito.

The Israeli military is clearly attempting to intimidate SAA officers and Hezbollah commanders in southern Syria. Tel Aviv is too worried about the Lebanese group presence in the region. Earlier this month, several rockets were launched from the region at the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights in support of Palestinian factions in Gaza who were facing a large Israeli attack at the time.

Honeywell Layoffs: 470 Staff To Be Terminated As N95 Mask Demand Drops

The layoffs come as many U.S. states are ending or scaling back mask mandates

Honeywell International Inc. is set to lay off 470 employees at its Smithfield facility due to a “dramatic reduction in demand for N95 face masks in the United States.”

Company spokesman Eric Krantz on Wednesday said the layoffs would only affect employees working on the N95 production line at the Smithfield site. Workers from other facilities would not be affected.

Smithfield facility had a dedicated production line to make N95 face masks.

“We are now seeing a dramatic reduction in demand for N95s in the U.S. as many states are ending or scaling back mask mandates and vaccinations are being widely distributed,” Krantz said in a statement to the Boston Globe. “For these reasons, Honeywell is adjusting its N95 operations and ceasing manual production of N95s at our facility in Smithfield.”

The affected employees would be encouraged to apply for other positions within the company, Krantz said, adding that Honeywell “would also offer severance pay to those eligible for it.”

The layoffs come after the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention on May 13 recommended that fully vaccinated individuals would no longer need to wear masks in most indoor and outdoor settings.

"If you are fully vaccinated, you can start doing the things that you had stopped doing because of the pandemic," CDC Director Dr. Rochelle Walensky had said at a White House briefing. "We have all longed for this moment when we can get back to some sense of normalcy."

The recommendation that vaccinated people could forgo masks, except in hospitals or public transit, has left experts worried.

“We are only just now getting to a reduced level over the last two weeks of cases, deaths, and hospitalizations. By the way, we were at this same level almost one year ago, and look at what happened in the intervening year. This feels a month or two premature in my mind,” Gregory Poland, an infectious diseases expert who heads the Mayo Clinic’s Vaccine Research Group in Minnesota, told Science News.

Beijing’s Propaganda Arm Continues Paying Millions to Spread Influence in the West

The Chinese Communist Party’s (CCP’s) propaganda mouthpiece has continued to pour millions into U.S. publications to spread its influence, a new document filed with the Justice Department shows.

China Daily, an English-language media outlet controlled by Beijing’s propaganda department, spent around $3 million on major Western outlets and publishing agencies over the past six months, according to a filing (pdf) dated May 24.

Approximately $1.6 million in advertising dollars went to Los Angeles Times, Foreign Policy, Financial Times, and Time Magazine. An additional sum of $329,898 went to The Globe and Mail, a Canadian newspaper.

China Daily also disbursed more than $1 million, a majority of which was in the United States, to have its newspaper printed. Notable recipients of the disbursements include the Los Angeles Times, The Boston Globe, The Seattle Times, Chicago Tribune, and The Houston Chronicle.

The overall spending for printing, advertising, and other expenses climbed by roughly $1.1 million, to $5.56 million between Nov. 1, 2020, and April 30, 2021, compared to half a year earlier.

China Daily was one of more than a dozen Chinese state-run media entities that the State Department designated as foreign missions of the CCP last year and required them to register their employees and U.S. properties.

Calculations by the Center for Responsive Politics, a Washington-based government transparency group, revealed that Chinese foreign-agent spending in the United States has soared six-fold over the past few years, from just over $10 million in 2016 to almost $64 million.

A number of major U.S. outlets have ceased running advertorials from the Chinese newspaper amid growing scrutiny of Chinese propaganda influence.

The New York Times deleted hundreds of paid content from its website after ending its relationship with China Daily, according to The Washington Free Beacon, which first reported on the FARA disclosure.

Los Angeles Times, Foreign Policy, Financial Times, Time, The Boston Globe, The Seattle Times, Chicago Tribune, and The Houston Chronicle did not immediately return a request from The Epoch Times for comment.

For years, the Chinese regime has spent millions of dollars running supplements, under the title of either “China Watch” or “China Focus,” in major Western newspapers.

Paul Ryan To Bash Trump, Populism, Order Republicans To Stop Fighting Culture War In Tonight’s Speech – Report

Paul Ryan will reportedly suggest that President Trump lost because he was too aggressive, and will order conservatives to stop worrying about "cultural battles"

Former House Speaker Paul Ryan, who famously stalled President Donald Trump’s legislation using his position as the top Republican in the U.S. House of Representatives in 2017 and 2018, is expected to bash President Trump and his brand of America First populism during an upcoming speech at the Reagan Library.

According excerpts of the speech originally obtained by Punch Bowl and later verified by CNN, Ryan will interject himself into the ongoing civil war between the establishment, led by House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy and Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, and the growing number of voters and legislators who support President Trump’s agenda.

“Once again, we conservatives find ourselves at a crossroads. And here’s one reality we have to face. If the conservative cause depends on the populist appeal of one personality, or on second-rate imitations, then we’re not going anywhere. Voters looking for Republican leaders want to see independence and mettle,” Ryan will say, according to an excerpt of his speech. “We win majorities by directing our loyalty and respect to voters, and by staying faithful to the conservative principles that unite us. This was true even when the person leading our movement was as impressive, polished, and agreeable as they come.”

Ryan will then claim that President Trump lost the 2020 election because “the country wanted a nice guy”, as opposed to President Trump, “who would move to the center and depolarize our politics.” He claims that the Republican Party must now provide a moderate “nice guy” who will please “middle-of-the-road folks” who he claims voted for Biden in 2020.

“For conservatives, this painful existence as the opposition can actually be an opportunity. Out of these years can come a healthy, growing, and united conservative movement, a movement that speaks again to the heart of a great nation,” Ryan is expected to say. Ryan will then warn conservatives not to fight cultural battles. “And we conservatives have to be careful not to get caught up in every little cultural battle. Sometimes these skirmishes are just creations of outrage peddlers, detached from reality and not worth anybody’s time. They draw attention away from the far more important case we must make to the American people.”

“Culture matters, yes, but our party must be defined by more than a tussle over the latest grievance or perceived slight. We must not let them take priority over solutions ­– grounded in principle – to improve people’s lives.”

Since leaving Congress, Ryan has become a board member at Fox News. He reportedly used his role at Fox News to reign in the former juggernaut and “do something” about the network’s support of President Trump. Ultimately, Fox News was the first of the large cable networks to begin calling contested battleground states for Biden in 2020, and hired a former NBC employee to determine the veracity of the results on November 3, 2020. Prior to becoming Speaker of the House, Ryan served as Sen. Mitt Romney’s running mate in the 2012 election. Ryan is expected to deliver this speech tonight.
