He makes a tender offer to buy the Vatican's 25% share in the company, which will give him controlling interest. Immobiliare's board approves the offer, pending ratification by the Pope.
The family goes to Sicily for Anthony's operatic debut in Palermo at the Teatro Massimo. Michael tells Vincent to pretend to defect from the Corleone family in order to spy on Altobello. Altobello introduces Vincent to Licio Lucchesi, Immobiliare's chairman. Michael visits Cardinal Lamberto, anticipated being the next pope, to discuss the deal. Lamberto persuades Michael to make his first confession in 30 years, during which Michael tearfully confesses that he ordered Fredo's murder. Vincent tells Michael that Altobello has hired Mosca, a veteran hitman, to assassinate Michael. Mosca and his son, disguised as priests, kill Corleone family friend Don Tommasino as he returns to his villa. While Michael and Kay tour Sicily, Michael asks for Kay's forgiveness, and they admit they still love each other. At Tommasino's funeral, Michael vows to sin no more. Following the pope's death, Cardinal Lamberto is elected to succeed him and the Immobiliare deal is ratified. The plotters against the ratification attempt to cover their tracks and Gilday kills the new pope with poisoned tea. Michael sees that Vincent is a changed man and names him the new Don of the Corleone family, in return for ending his romance with Mary.
The family sees Anthony's performance in Cavalleria rusticana in Palermo while Vincent exacts his revenge:
Vincent's men smother Keinszig and then hang him from a bridge, making his death look like a suicide;
At the opera, Connie gives Altobello a poisoned cannoli and watches him die from her opera box;
Calò, Tommasino's former bodyguard, stabs Lucchesi in the neck with his own spectacles.
Neri travels to the Vatican, where he shoots and kills Gilday."
So Godfather III was a very Rome, Vatican, Papacy orientated sequel.

The difference between “Part III” and the first two films isn’t in style; it’s that, with the third film, Coppola was passionately interested in his subject.
The first two “Godfathers,” made during the age of the Vietnam War and Watergate, reflect a generalized recognition that American self-congratulatory mythology was a hollow veneer; they tore away the veil of civic virtue to show that gangsters are us, that corporate power and Mafia power were indissociable.
In “Part III,” Coppola did with and to the Catholic Church what he’d previously done with and to American mythology.
Where “Part I” and “Part II” tapped into a general Zeitgeist of disillusionment (which accounts significantly for its success), “Part III,” though a box-office success, is a much more personal film, with a political and emotional engine that is Coppola’s alone.

Soros is a supporter of progressive and liberal political causes, to which he dispenses donations through his foundation, the Open Society Foundations.[18] Between 1979 and 2011,

DETROIT (ChurchMilitant.com) – In the past four years, Jesuit institutions have received at least $1.7 million in donations from the Open Society Foundations (OSF) that are funded by plutocrat George Soros.
By examining documents recorded on the internet, it’s evident that the Jesuits’ biggest recipient of Soros’ largesse is the U.S.-based Jesuit Worldwide Learning.
In 2016, the organization received $890,000, while, in 2018, it garnered another $410,000. This was the only one of the three Jesuit institutions to recognize the Soros Foundations as a "partner."
Among its other "partners" are various German philanthropies, while the U.N. Refugee Agency, Fujitsu, Seitwerk and AfB are listed as cooperating organizations.
In 2018, Jesuit Refugee Service received $176,452 in support of migrants from Latin America and the Caribbean region. For its part, Jesuit Service to Migrants (Servicio Jesuita a Migrantes) received $75,000 in 2016 and another $151,125 in 2018, according to ACI Prensa.
In July, apparently embarrassed, Guatemalan archbishop Gonzalo de Villa y Vásquez claimed that he had no knowledge of George Soros and the latter's pro-abortion progressive agenda. He was appointed to his current post by Pope Francis, a fellow Jesuit.
In the 1990s and into the new millennium, Villa y Vásquez chaired the board of the local iteration of the Soros philanthropy and served as chancellor of Guatemala's Landivar University, which received funding from OSF. Indeed, Landivar University received $221,534 in 2017 from OSF.
Donations given by OSF reflect George Soros' progressive views on immigration, abortion and other issues. Since its creation in 1993, the philanthropy has been generous to pro-abortion efforts around the world.
For example, while future archbishop Villa y Vásquez was chairing Soros' Open Society in Guatemala in 2003, the philanthropy was funding the training of American abortionists in how to provide early-term abortions through the so-called morning-after pill and the "vacuum-aspiration technique." OSF was also making substantial grants to the pro-abortion Sexuality Information and Education Council of the United States (SIECUS) and the Guttmacher Institute. OSF also donated funds to the National Abortion Rights League (NARAL), which has long lobbied for abortion.
When WikiLeaks revealed the emails of the Democratic National Committee and various allied groups in advance of the 2016 presidential election, it found that the president of Voices for Progress, Sandy Newman, conspired in 2012 with John Podesta of the Soros-funded Center for American Progress to promote contraception as a “revolution” to overthrow the “middle ages dictatorship” of the Catholic Church.
Podesta wrote, “We created Catholics in Alliance for the Common Good [CACG] to organize for a moment like this.”According to its Facebook page, “Catholics in Alliance for the Common Good promote the social justice mission of Pope Francis and the Catholic Church in U.S. politics, media and culture.”
CACG was prominent in pushing for national health care legislation that became known as Obamacare, which Catholic bishops criticized for lacking conscience provisions to prevent Catholic hospitals from performing abortions.
Also, CACG was one of some 16 others to receive $4.5 million in Soros funds. Podesta served as chief of staff in the Clinton administration and, later, as a counselor in the Obama administration.
Born in Hungary to a Jewish family, Soros nevertheless has said that Jews themselves cause anti-Semitism, a charge dubbed "obscene" by the Anti-Defamation League.
He has supported numerous leftist organizations in the United States and elsewhere, including the Center for American Progress, Black Lives Matter, MoveOn.org, America Coming Together and the pro-marijuana Drug Policy Alliance.
Soros has, likewise, funded organizations that have called for sanctions against Israel.

Reportedly worth more than $14 billion, Soros was the biggest single donor to Hillary Clinton's unsuccessful presidential campaign. He also supports candidates in local district attorney races who support decriminalizing narcotics. In 2016, he gave $18 billion to OSF, making the organization the second-biggest philanthropy in the United States.
Soros' largesse has been rewarded vocally by Pope Francis. In a 2017 letter, Pope Francis congratulated the World Meeting of Popular Movements that was organized by Vatican officials and held that year in California.
