it really is shocking, i know very smart people as well who have fallen for these lies, i do have sympathy for them, just because we are awake or stupid, does not mean we should not have compassion too. Its fucked and sad, and everyone involved in pushing this poison needs to go. One thing i was told though second hand , was that people feel this is the "RIGHT" thing to do.
