Russian president (Ciarán Hinds) suddenly dies, world tension escalates. Coupled with missing nuclear scientists and the threat of a nuclear detonation on United States soil (PROVIDED BY ISRAEL), young CIA analyst Jack Ryan (Ben Affleck) must uncover who is behind the conspiracy.
In the movie, Israeli terrorists buys a crashed plane w/ massive bomb that is found by Middle Eastern locals. A terrorist faction from Israel wishes to cause WWIII. A loyalist Patriot CIA Officer and CIA Director (Jack Ryan and Morgan Freeman) tried to prevent this but the bomb went off in Baltimore anyways.
The CIA Director had established a secret 'back-channel' connection to the Kremlin and over the decades they became distant but 'close' friends. They both wished to de-escalate tensions and did not want war between the Countries. It is only through this back-channel from our Intel to Russian intel that prevented prior tense escalations, now taken over by Jack Ryan, by establishing his own connection directly to the Russian President, he prevents both Presidents from waging WWIII. It was about Trusting the other human because nobody truly wants WWIII.
