Eleven senators skipped procedural vote on bill to create commission to probe Capitol riot

The absences were bipartisan, with two Democrats and nine Republicans missing the vote.

Nearly a dozen U.S. senators skipped the Friday procedural vote about legislation that would have established a commission to investigate the Jan. 6 Capitol riot.

The absences were bipartisan, with two Democrats and nine Republicans missing the vote which ultimately did not reach the 60 votes required to surmount the Republican filibuster. The vote tally was 54-35.

Fox News noted that the vote had first been scheduled for Thursday but was later shifted to the Friday, which fell prior to the Memorial Day holiday weekend.

The lawmakers who skipped the vote included: Democratic Sens. Patty Murray of Washington and Kyrsten Sinema of Arizona, as well as GOP Sens. Marsha Blackburn of Tennessee, Roy Blunt of Missouri, Mike Braun of Indiana, Richard Burr of North Carolina, James Inhofe of Oklahoma, James Risch of Idaho, Mike Rounds of South Dakota, Richard Shelby of Alabama and Pat Toomey of Pennsylvania.

Murray said in a statement that she flew home "for a personal family matter."

Toomey had a family commitment to attend, a spokesperson said, according to Fox News which also reported that Shelby went to Alabama due to a family engagement, according to his office. Risch went to Idaho to go to his granddaughters' high school graduation.

Blunt passed up the vote so he could follow through with a commitment to go to a reopening ceremony for Wilson's Creek National Battlefield.

"Senator Rounds is currently fulfilling his responsibilities critical to his role on the Armed Services and Foreign Relations committees by meeting with strategic partners and military leaders in war zones overseas," that senator's communications director said.

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Helio Castroneves joined the exclusive club of four-time Indianapolis 500 winners Sunday, and then scaled the fence at Indianapolis Motor Speedway in front of the largest crowd since the start of the pandemic.

The Brazilian joined A.J. Foyt, Al Unser Sr. and Rick Mears, his former mentor at Team Penske, as the only four-time winners of “The Greatest Spectacle in Racing.” Mears was the last driver to join the club in 1991.

Castroneves won his third 500 in 2009 and has been chasing win No. 4 ever since.

At 46 years old, in his first season no longer driving for Roger Penske, he held off Alex Palou to win the 105th running of the race in front of 135,000 fans — the most at any sports event in the world since the pandemic began 18 months ago. The number represented 40% of the speedway’s capacity and was agreed upon by health officials.

A year ago, no fans were allowed for the race that was delayed from May to August. This year, celebrities were back and fans were everywhere and they were treated to a win by one of the most popular drivers in Indy 500 history.

Secretary For Kenya’s Atheist Society Announces He’s ‘Found Jesus Christ’, Resigns

The Atheists in Kenya Society posted notice of the new Christian's resignation to its social media.

The Atheists in Kenya Society, which advocates leftist cultural policies and secularism in the mostly Christian nation, abruptly announced that he has “found Jesus Christ” and, accordingly, resigned from the organization.

In a statement posted to the organization’s social media and website, the Atheists in Kenya Society reveals that “regretfully, the Secretary of the Atheists in Kenya Society Mr. Seth Mahiga, informed me that he has made the decision to resign from his position as Secretary of the society.” The press statement continues, “Seth’s reason for resigning is that he has found Jesus Christ and is no longer interested in promoting atheism in Kenya.” The organization thanks Mahiga for his “dedication over the last one and half years” and notes that the position of Secretary “has been rendered vacant” and the Society is accepting resumes from other Kenyan atheists.

The Society’s Twitter account also features a short clip that apparently shows Mahiga attending church on Sunday and testifying about his decision to leave the secular group. “I’ve been going through difficulties in life, and then I decided to resign as the Secretary, amen,” said Mahugi as the congregation of Christians began to cheer. The pastor noted, “The Bible says every knee shall bow.”

The church broadcast appeared on Elevate TV, a Kenyan media outlet that features “live interviews, live sermons & services, Christian music” and other Christian-themed programming. On Facebook, Elevate TV shared the same clip, and wrote, “Seth Mahiga, former Atheist Secretary General, confesses Jesus Christ at Life Church International Nairobi after resigning.”

Nicole Malliotakis Introduces Bill Prohibiting BLM Flag from Flying over U.S. Embassies

Rep. Nicole Malliotakis (R-NY) has introduced a bill barring United States embassies from flying flags with political messages such as those representing Black Lives Matter (BLM).

According to a Friday press release:

Congresswoman Nicole Malliotakis (NY-11), today with House GOP Conference Chair Elise Stefanik (NY-21), Congressmen Ken Buck (CO-04), Michael Guest (MS-03), Darrell Issa (CA-50), Brian Mast (FL-18), and Pete Sessions (TX-17), introduced the Stars and Stripes Act of 2021, legislation that directs the Secretary of State to restrict the display of certain flags or banners at diplomatic and consular posts around the world. Malliotakis’ bill is in response to Secretary of State Antony Blinken’s recent directive authorizing and encouraging all U.S. embassies overseas to display ‘Black Lives Matter’ flags and banners.

Blinken reportedly encouraged all U.S. embassies and diplomatic missions to honor the radical BLM movement on May 25, the anniversary of George Floyd’s death.

However, it is “inappropriate for President [Joe] Biden and Secretary Blinken to authorize and encourage the display of inherently political flags that are in no way affiliated with the U.S. Government over American embassies overseas,” Malliotakis noted in the press release:

The American flag is a beacon of freedom and hope for oppressed peoples around the world; it should be the primary flag flown above our embassies and that is what my legislation seeks to accomplish. The Administration’s directive is an insult to those who made the ultimate sacrifice for our flag and our nation — especially as we head into Memorial Day weekend — and it is absolutely ridiculous that legislation is needed to correct this issue.

The news release said the BLM organization’s website promotes several “partisan political demands and initiatives” that include defunding the police.

Malliotakis shared the text of the Stars & Stripes Act of 2021 Friday on social media:
