So, ARCore wants us to believe that:

 

a camera must knows it's position to function - false

 

a camera must interpret horizontal surfaces - false

 

a camera must know lighting conditions to work - false, except for complete idiots

 

Thus, what are these functions truly required for?

Must know it's position means GPS location, and not within 10m but a single meter.

 

Horizontal surfaces are normally a city feature - not typically seen in nature. This would tie nicely into Google or Bing maps to determine and verify location of a photo.

 

Lighting would give you time of day - allowing further verification of picture if time stamp is on it.

 

But we all know this is to make the camera more "friendly" and "easier to use"โ€ฆ/sarc
