Not to argue with the General's point… I would point out that taking war objectives, whether or not there has been death, is what wins wars. If the enemy's oil supplies get cut off - or their population turns against their governance - the war can be won with very few battles taking place. Battles are what happens when the sides are trying to win in the same place at the same time (and often the same thing).
